Book excerpt: Playing A Game…. And Don’t Know the Cyber Security Rules. Networking in the form of internet, extranet, intranet, and virtual private network (vpn) has opened many doors for businesses. No longer is commerce inhibited by time zones or geographic locations to conduct financial transactions. Cyberspace affords businesses enormous revenue opportunities with reduced associated costs. All that is necessary for customers to make online purchases is internet availability and connectivity, an internet of things (IoT) digital media (i.e. laptop, desktop, tablet, smartphone, etc), and a method of payment (i.e. bank account, credit card debit card, etc). The problem resonates from the protection of your personal identifiable information (PII) during authentication and validation processes. The Digital Battle: Cyber Security is an attempt to assist consumers by protecting their PII, trade secrets, and critical infrastructure from compromise. To prevent exploitation, consumers need vigilance paired with knowledge. Using strategies of cyber security outlined in the three domains within this book, readers can gain the tools they need to succeed. Be Ready, cover your Defenses, and take the Offensive with Cyber Warfare Tactics.

Book excerpt: The first time that Apple, Google and Microsoft found themselves sharing the same digital space was 1998. They were radically different companies and they would subsequently fight a series of pitched battles for control of different parts of the digital landscape. They could not know of the battles to come. But they would be world-changing. This new edition of Digital Wars looks at each of these battles in turn. Accessible and comprehensive, it analyses the very different cultures of the three companies and assesses exactly who are the victors on each front. Thoroughly updated to include information on the latest developments and rising competitors Samsung, it also include a completely new chapter on how China moved from being the assembly plant for music players and smartphones, to becoming the world's biggest smartphone business.

Book Future Crimes

Download or read book Future Crimes written by Marc Goodman and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2015-02-24 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES and WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER ONE OF THE WASHINGTON POST'S 10 BEST BOOKS OF 2015 One of the world’s leading authorities on global security, Marc Goodman takes readers deep into the digital underground to expose the alarming ways criminals, corporations, and even countries are using new and emerging technologies against you—and how this makes everyone more vulnerable than ever imagined. Technological advances have benefited our world in immeasurable ways, but there is an ominous flip side: our technology can be turned against us. Hackers can activate baby monitors to spy on families, thieves are analyzing social media posts to plot home invasions, and stalkers are exploiting the GPS on smart phones to track their victims’ every move. We all know today’s criminals can steal identities, drain online bank accounts, and wipe out computer servers, but that’s just the beginning. To date, no computer has been created that could not be hacked—a sobering fact given our radical dependence on these machines for everything from our nation’s power grid to air traffic control to financial services. Yet, as ubiquitous as technology seems today, just over the horizon is a tidal wave of scientific progress that will leave our heads spinning. If today’s Internet is the size of a golf ball, tomorrow’s will be the size of the sun. Welcome to the Internet of Things, a living, breathing, global information grid where every physical object will be online. But with greater connections come greater risks. Implantable medical devices such as pacemakers can be hacked to deliver a lethal jolt of electricity and a car’s brakes can be disabled at high speed from miles away. Meanwhile, 3-D printers can produce AK-47s, bioterrorists can download the recipe for Spanish flu, and cartels are using fleets of drones to ferry drugs across borders. With explosive insights based upon a career in law enforcement and counterterrorism, Marc Goodman takes readers on a vivid journey through the darkest recesses of the Internet. Reading like science fiction, but based in science fact, Future Crimes explores how bad actors are primed to hijack the technologies of tomorrow, including robotics, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. These fields hold the power to create a world of unprecedented abundance and prosperity. But the technological bedrock upon which we are building our common future is deeply unstable and, like a house of cards, can come crashing down at any moment. Future Crimes provides a mind-blowing glimpse into the dark side of technological innovation and the unintended consequences of our connected world. Goodman offers a way out with clear steps we must take to survive the progress unfolding before us. Provocative, thrilling, and ultimately empowering, Future Crimes will serve as an urgent call to action that shows how we can take back control over our own devices and harness technology’s tremendous power for the betterment of humanity—before it’s too late.

Book Crypto Wars

  • Author : Craig Jarvis
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2020-12-30
  • ISBN : 1000284867
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Crypto Wars written by Craig Jarvis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crypto wars have raged for half a century. In the 1970s, digital privacy activists prophesied the emergence of an Orwellian State, made possible by computer-mediated mass surveillance. The antidote: digital encryption. The U.S. government warned encryption would not only prevent surveillance of law-abiding citizens, but of criminals, terrorists, and foreign spies, ushering in a rival dystopian future. Both parties fought to defend the citizenry from what they believed the most perilous threats. The government tried to control encryption to preserve its surveillance capabilities; privacy activists armed citizens with cryptographic tools and challenged encryption regulations in the courts. No clear victor has emerged from the crypto wars. Governments have failed to forge a framework to govern the, at times conflicting, civil liberties of privacy and security in the digital age—an age when such liberties have an outsized influence on the citizen–State power balance. Solving this problem is more urgent than ever. Digital privacy will be one of the most important factors in how we architect twenty-first century societies—its management is paramount to our stewardship of democracy for future generations. We must elevate the quality of debate on cryptography, on how we govern security and privacy in our technology-infused world. Failure to end the crypto wars will result in societies sleepwalking into a future where the citizen–State power balance is determined by a twentieth-century status quo unfit for this century, endangering both our privacy and security. This book provides a history of the crypto wars, with the hope its chronicling sets a foundation for peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From perilous early years through clashes with the BBC and BT, not to mention the News Corporation bid for full control that failed in the wake of 2010's phone hacking scandal, there has been no shortage of drama in Sky's history – nor in its likely future. In 2018, the organization was the target of bids from two true titans of the global media industry – Disney and Comcast – with a dramatic bidding war waged for ultimate ownership. Throw in an industry already shaken by the arrival of newer media players such as Netflix, the declining circulation of Murdoch newspapers such as The Sun and The Times, as well as the UK government's scrutiny of the Murdoch family's influence on UK media, and the scene was set for a major corporate battle of a size rarely seen on the global business stage. But how exactly did Comcast win in the battle for shareholder votes? How will the Murdoch empire fare when the dust finally settles? And what does it mean now for the future of entertainment in a streaming, downloadable and digital world? Featuring interviews with key individuals and stakeholders from around the world, The Battle for Sky offers a timely and intriguing glimpse into the workings of media empires, and a gripping account of one of the largest corporate battles in recent years.

Book Training Requirements of Battle Staff NCOs in Digital Units

Download or read book Training Requirements of Battle Staff NCOs in Digital Units written by Raymond J. Felton and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Army is transforming to a versatile force with the capabilities, particularly the digital technology, necessary to optimize the flow of information and enhance situational awareness. One vital enlisted position affected by the implementation of these digital technologies and equipment is assigned to Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers. The Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer course trains Noncommissioned Officers to be integral members of battle staffs in analog units. The current institutional training does not include instruction on how to use digital technology to leverage performance in Tactical Operations Centers. To determine if the role of the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer changed with the inception of digital technology, data were collected from 522Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers. Findings, based on surveys, observations, and interviews, suggest the need to include digital training within the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officers Course and the need for system integration training to support the change in the role of the Battle Staff Noncommissioned Officer.

Book The Battle Of The Bulge Through The Lens

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Vorwald retraces the fields of battle which were once bitterly contested killing grounds in the struggle to halt Hitler’s final gambit in the West. The battle touched dozens of towns and villages throughout the Ardennes and each is depicted through the photographer’s lens in 1944-45 and exactly 50 years later. Philip’s efforts to match precisely the wartime photographs with present-day comparisons are remarkable, all the more so because he has striven in many cases to achieve a ‘weather match’. Presented in an easy-to-use alphabetical format, the?precise location where each picture was taken is indicated on accompanying sketch maps, with instructions how to get there, giving this publication a secondary role as an indispensable guide book to historic sites of the Battle of the?Bulge.

Book Impact of Information Technology on Battle Command

Download or read book Impact of Information Technology on Battle Command written by George E. Dodge and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The possible effects of information technology insertion on organizations and their personnel are derived from an analysis of published management science and business literature. Two major points are developed. First, many factors other than the technical potential of a given information technology interact with one another and with the technology itself to determine the resultant nature, form, and functionality of the digitized organization. Second, the most significant impact on commanders and their staffs for the foreseeable future will not be quantum improvements in operational performance made possible by information technology but, rather, the technology insertion process, itself. Based on this analysis, we propose that implications for command in a digitized environment can be best described by reference to a continuum of organizational structures and associated behaviors. The extremes of this continuum are defined as digital mechanistic and digital organic. A third point between these two extremes is defined as digital adaptive. We discuss the nature of command over the range of the proposed continuum. The new competencies that might be required of commanders and their staffs regardless of the outcome of the technology insertion process are then discussed. The chapter concludes with suggestions for improving the technology insertion process."--DTIC

Book Crusader Battle Lab Warfighting Experiment BLWE 1 Assessing Tactics Techniques and Procedures TTPs for Crusader Units Within a Synthetic Environment

Download or read book Crusader Battle Lab Warfighting Experiment BLWE 1 Assessing Tactics Techniques and Procedures TTPs for Crusader Units Within a Synthetic Environment written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory and the Depth and Simultaneous Attack Battle Lab have performed the first Battle Lab Warfighting Experiment that evaluated operational concepts for the Crusader system. The experiment was conducted during June and July of 1996 in the Janus Battle Simulation Center at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma. The research addressed critical operation issues focused on the employment of the Crusader system on the 21st century digitized battlefield. Command and control, and ammunition logistics and resupply systems used by a direct support field artillery battalion when employing the simulated Crusader system were evaluated to identity innovative tactics, techniques, and procedures that could be introduced in conjunction with the fielding of the Crusader system. This research was conducted using a synthetic battlefield environment that placed field artillerymen into distributed interactive simulation technologies where they used actual tactical data processing equipment to perform fire support functions. There were four major outcomes of this research: (1) A preliminary set of tactics, techniques, and procedures that addressed command and control functions, situation awareness, fire order consistency, and sustainment was identified. This information will be evaluated further by the system developer and field artillery community and will be considered for additional testing during later experiments or closed loop studies. (2) Major findings were: (a) The Crusader system as currently specified, will deliver effective fires to defeat the projected threat and provide timely support to maneuver forces. (b) The pooled resupply concept was successfully demonstrated and shown to be a robust technique in the face of losses of individual resupply vehicles.
