Despite the ups and downs of the business cycle in Japan, there remains a core of world-class Japanese companies that have developed manufacturing management systems that companies throughout the world strive to emulate. In this edited volume, a team of eminent scholars uses case studies and large-scale surveys to explain in depth the process of transferring and transforming the best Japanese Management Systems (JMS) by both Japanese- and U.S.-owned firms. While the most successful of the Japanese manufacturing transplants rely, to varying degrees, on home country management techniques, they have had to adapt them to fit U.S. conditions. (2009) 2 - 10 There is no doubt that every person from all walks of life is indeed using a Japanese product or technology in his daily life, whether it is cars, pens or paper. Indeed, Japan provided the world with many successful global companies and brands such as Sony, Fujitsu, HP and Toyota. These global Japanese brands did not only affect Japanese economy, it also affected the world economy and trade. These industrial revolutions put Japan on one of the six big industrial countries alongside the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France and Italy. It is not the manufacturing elements that made Japan reach that, but there is also a great management system. The success of their approaches was not by adopting a fixed accounting system or by Activity-based costing ABC, but by using systematic flexible systems (Patel and Russell 1994, pp.64-65). In the last 50 years, Japan brought to the world a successful management style starting with a government model in the early 1950s, to a corporate model in the 1980s (Porter et al. 2002; Whitehill 1991). The root of the modern Japanese management goes back to post Second World War, when Japan started its economic recovery. Japan started a phenomenal revolution management system (Porter et al. 2002; Whitehill 1991). Towards the 1970s, research showed that the United States and some European countries used a similar system (Hayashi 2002). In 1980s the time came to challenge just how these systems would work out under the Japanese corporate management systems. Professor William Ouchi's book, about the Japanese management system entitled Theory Z: how American business can meet the Japanese challenge (England 1983; Hayashi 2002). The book became a standard management system practice in the United States for more than 20 years. During the last century, there were many theories which appeared on the table based on Japanese model from theory X to Z. However, the American companies did not found any productivity value on this model system and the theory Z management application became unlikely used among American companies and businessmen (England 1983; Whitehill 1991; Jeremiah J, 1992) perhaps because of differences in the environment or the culture. However, the Japanese culture has played an important role in the Japanese management system. In fact, the Japanese firm management system was based on two functions; columns economy and culture.

These ideas, linked with the knowledge of the workforce, are rapidly becoming the primary source of competitive advantage in the world economy. The book provides an in-depth look at eight Japanese-affiliated manufacturing facilities operating in the United States, combined with examinations of their sister facilities in Japan. The authors offer their insights into the complex process by which elements of work systems in one country interact with those in another. They trace the flow of ideas from Japan to the US and other nations, and the beginnings of a reverse diffusion of innovation back to Japan. The authors organize their findings into six categories: the cross-cultural diffusion of work practices, team-based work systems, kaizen and employee involvement, employment security, human resource management, and labor-management relations. Their study of team-based work systems yields a taxonomy of teams and reveals some conflicts between the desire for self-management and the existence of interdependencies. Investigations into kaizen (ongoing incremental improvement) indicate that its emphasis on employee-driven, systematic problem solving makes it a strong counterpoint to the idea of top-down "re-engineering." Looking at employment security, the authors note that while most US managers believe that it restrains managerial flexibility, managers at the firms they observed see it as essential to the flexibility associated with teamwork and kaizen. The study of human resource management practices suggests competitive advantages in diverse, older, unionized, and urban work forces, and emphasizes the importance of wide-ranging training programs in a work system premised on a long-term perspective. The "wildcard" in the work places observed is labor-management relations, the area in which Japanese managers have been least likely to import their ideas. The authors report on several situations in which existing labor-management structures remained untouched, with mixed results: greater labor-management consultation, for example, but also increased ambiguity of roles. The thread running through all of these areas of work is "virtual knowledge," an ephemeral form of knowledge derived from a particular combination of people focused on a given issue. The authors point out that this powerful form of knowledge is only effectively harnessed in environments that are free of fear, that have established procedures for collective problem-solving, and that have some stability in group composition. They claim that too often companies allow virtual knowledge to dissipate, squandering opportunities to create more competitive workplaces. For those organizations that have succeeded in anticipating and channeling it, however, virtual knowledge leads to a knowledge-driven workplace and continuous improvement.
