Book The Spots of the Godly and of the Wicked

Download or read book The Spots of the Godly and of the Wicked written by Jeremiah Burroughs and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this present work, Jeremiah Burroughs deals both kindly and forcibly with a peculiar angle on the doctrine of sin and sanctification. In comparing the manner in which the unconverted sin in parallel to the manner in which saints still sin, even the best of saints, Burroughs explains how sin affects these two groups, and how God deals with both as a result. He works masterfully from Deuteronomy 32:5, “Their spot is not the spot of his children.” The wicked have spots. The godly have spots. But the nature of these spots is what makes these sermons so powerful and utterly practical for the saint who understands the ways of Christ and God in their own sanctification. The spots of the wicked are not like the spots of the righteous. Burroughs explains why this is the case. The reader will be left to read to find out “why”. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Book Evil Deeds in High Places

Download or read book Evil Deeds in High Places written by David E. Settje and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highlights Watergate as a critical turning point in Christian engagement in US politics The Watergate scandal was one of the most infamous events in American democratic history. Faith in the government plummeted, leaving the nation feeling betrayed and unsure who could be trusted anymore. In Evil Deeds in High Places, David E. Settje examines how Christian institutions reacted to this moral and ethical collapse, and the ways in which they chose to assert their moral authority. Settje argues that Watergate was a turning point for spurring Christian engagement with politics. While American Christians had certainly already been active in the public sphere, these events motivated a more urgent engagement in response, and served to pave the way for conservatives to push more fully into political power. Historians have carefully analyzed the judicial, media, congressional, and presidential actions surrounding Watergate, but there has been very little consideration of popular reactions of Americans across the political spectrum. Though this book does not aspire to offer a comprehensive picture of America’s citizenry, by examining the variety of Protestant Christian experiences—those more conservative, those more liberal, and those in between—and by incorporating analyses of both white and black Christian reactions, it captures a significant swath of the American population at the time, providing one of the only studies to examine how everyday Americans viewed the events of Watergate. Grasping the dynamics of Christian responses to Watergate enables us to comprehend more completely that volatile moment in US history, and provides important context to make sense of reactions to our more recent political turmoil.

Book Visual Theology

  • Author : Tim Challies
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2016
  • ISBN : 9780310520436
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Visual Theology written by Tim Challies and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in a visual culture. Today, people increasingly rely upon visuals to help them understand new and difficult concepts. The rise and stunning popularity of the Internet infographic has given us a new way in which to convey data, concepts and ideas. But the visual portrayal of truth is not a novel idea. Indeed, God himself used visuals to teach truth to his people. The tabernacle of the Old Testament was a visual representation of man's distance from God and God's condescension to his people. Each part of the tabernacle was meant to display something of man's treason against God and God's kind response. Likewise, the sacraments of the New Testament are visual representations of man's sin and God's response. Even the cross was both reality and a visual demonstration. As teachers and lovers of sound theology, Challies and Byers have a deep desire to convey the concepts and principles of systematic theology in a fresh, beautiful and informative way. In this book, they have made the deepest truths of the Bible accessible in a way that can be seen and understood by a visual generation.

Book Is Nature Ever Evil

    Book Details:
  • Author : Willem B. Drees
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2003-09-02
  • ISBN : 113443670X
  • Pages : 358 pages

Download or read book Is Nature Ever Evil written by Willem B. Drees and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can nature be evil, or ugly, or wrong? Can we apply moral value to nature? From a compellingly original premise, under the auspices of major thinkers including Mary Midgley, Philip Hefner, Arnold Benz and Keith Ward, Is Nature Ever Evil? examines the value-structure of our cosmos and of the science that seeks to describe it. Science, says editor Willem B. Drees, claims to leave moral questions to aesthetic and religious theory. But the supposed neutrality of the scientific view masks a host of moral assumptions. How does an ethically transparent science arrive at concepts of a 'hostile' universe or a 'selfish' gene? How do botanists, zoologists, cosmologists and geologists respond to the beauty of the universe they study, reliant as it is upon catastrophe, savagery, power and extinction? Then there are various ways in which science seeks to alter and improve nature. What do prosthetics and gene technology, cyborgs and dairy cows say about our appreciation of nature itself? Surely science, in common with philosophy, magic and religion, can aid our understanding of evil in nature - whether as natural catasrophe, disease, predatory cruelty or mere cosmic indifference? Focusing on the ethical evaluation of nature itself, Is Nature Ever Evil? re-ignites crucial questions of hope, responsibility, and possibility in nature.
