Book Dr Luc s Promise

Download or read book Dr Luc s Promise written by Luc Evenepoel and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the butter in a croissant not actually the worst part for you? Why can diet drinks make you gain weight? Why might going to the gym less be exactly the thing you need to do to lose those extra pounds? In this groundbreaking book Dr Luc Evenepoel answers all these questions and more, explaining why the basic ideas we are fed about dieting are often the very reason that we cannot lose weight. Dr Luc’s Promise will give you the tools to re-engineer what you think you know about diets and dieting, allowing you to finally understand what is preventing you from attaining your ideal weight. You’ll learn why juice is not any better than cola, why pasta is probably better than bread but only if it’s not overcooked, and why you should never skip breakfast. You’ll learn why you can lose weight from spending more time sleeping, how you can lose 15 kilos in a year by simply changing your crockery, why fussing about food is worse than relaxing about it, and why diets don't work and slimming pills neither. Luc Evenepoel obtained his medical degree from the University of Louvain, Belgium (his home country), and his degree of specialist in anaesthesia and intensive care from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He lives and practices in Cape Town.

Book Weakness of Will and Delay Discounting

Download or read book Weakness of Will and Delay Discounting written by Nora Heinzelmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breaking one's dieting rule or resolution to quit smoking, procrastination, convenient lies, even the failure of entire nations to follow through with plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions or keep a pandemic in check - these phenomena have been discussed by philosophers and behavioural scientists as examples of weakness of will and delay discounting. Despite the common subject matter both fields have to date rarely worked together for mutual benefit. For the empirical literature is hardly accessible to a reader not familiar with econometric theory; and researchers in the behavioural sciences may find philosophical accounts invoking discounting models difficult to understand without inside knowledge of the debates and historical background. Nora Heinzelmann targets this lacuna by making the ideas and findings from both disciplines intelligible to outsiders. This reveals that discounting - as philosophers have conceived of it - is neither necessary nor sufficient for weakness of will, even though there is substantial overlap. Heinzelmann develops a richer descriptive account of weakness of will that is based on the empirically founded assumption that weak-willed behaviour is determined by uncertainty about whether or when a good materialises. She also explains why weakness of the will understood in this way is irrational: the agent yields to a cognitive bias that leads them to underestimate the greater good they think they ought to and can obtain. Finally, she explores practical implications for individuals and policymakers.

Download or read book Between Kant and Hegel written by Dieter Henrich and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrifying when first delivered in 1973, legendary in the years since, Dieter Henrich's lectures on German Idealism were the first contact a major German philosopher had made with an American audience since the onset of World War II. They remain one of the most eloquent explanations and interpretations of classical German philosophy and of the way it relates to the concerns of contemporary philosophy. Thanks to the editorial work of David Pacini, the lectures appear here with annotations linking them to editions of the masterworks of German philosophy as they are now available. Henrich describes the movement that led from Kant to Hegel, beginning with an interpretation of the structure and tensions of Kant's system. He locates the Kantian movement and revival of Spinoza, as sketched by F. H. Jacobi, in the intellectual conditions of the time and in the philosophical motivations of modern thought. Providing extensive analysis of the various versions of Fichte's Science of Knowledge, Henrich brings into view a constellation of problems that illuminate the accomplishments of the founders of Romanticism, Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel, and of the poet Hölderlin's original philosophy. He concludes with an interpretation of the basic design of Hegel's system.

Book Quantum Leadership

Download or read book Quantum Leadership written by Frederick Chavalit Tsao and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new book, Frederick Chavalit Tsao and Chris Laszlo argue that current approaches to leadership fail to produce positive outcomes for either businesses or the communities they serve. Employee disengagement and customer fickleness remain high, resulting in a lack of creativity and collaboration at all levels of entrepreneurial activity. Investor demand for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) continues to be poorly integrated into profit strategies. Drawing on extensive research, this book shows how changing a person's consciousness is the most powerful lever for unlocking his or her leadership potential to create wealth and serve humankind. A wide range of practices of connectedness provide the keys. The journey to higher consciousness changes people at a deep intuitive level, combining embodied experience with analytic-cognitive skill development. Tsao and Laszlo show how leaders who pursue this journey are more likely to flourish with significant benefits to both business and society. These include greater creativity and collaboration along with an increased capability to inspire people and produce lasting change. Readers will come away with a deep understanding of quantum leadership and the day-to-day practices that can help them achieve greater effectiveness and wellbeing at work.

Book Aggression Time and Understanding

Download or read book Aggression Time and Understanding written by Frank M. Staemmler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aggression, Time, and Understanding is the first book of Staemmler’s writings to be published in English. In the early sections of this book, Staemmler (supported by his Buddhist wife, Barbara) comprehensively explores and questions the traditional Gestalt therapy theory of aggression and proposes a new approach to working with anger and hostility. Further sections include in-depth examinations of the topics of time (the "Here and Now" and "Regressive Processes") and understanding ("Dialogue and Interpretation" and "Cultivated Uncertainty"). From Staemmler’s "critical gaze," Dan Bloom observes, "concepts emerge as refreshed, re-formed, and revitalized constructs so we can continue to develop the theory and practice of contemporary Gestalt therapy."

Book Confessing Excess

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carole Spitzack
  • Publisher : SUNY Press
  • Release : 1990-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780791402719
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Confessing Excess written by Carole Spitzack and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the discourse on female weight reduction in American culture, Confessing Excess analyzes contemporary dieting and the weight loss literature by taking up the themes of confession and surveillance. Spitzack argues that dieting is characterized by confession (of "excess") which women internalize and which necessitates ongoing surveillance or monitoring of the body. Informal conversations and in-depth interviews also juxtapose women's everyday dieting experiences with the discourse of dieting texts. By evaluating the cultural construction of women in this manner, the author illuminates the power strategies that offer self-acceptance at the price of self-condemnation.

Book One Hundred Years of Russell s Paradox

Download or read book One Hundred Years of Russell s Paradox written by Godehard Link and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this volume represent the main body of research arising from the International Munich Centenary Conference in 2001, which commemorated the discovery of the famous Russell Paradox a hundred years ago. The 31 contributions and the introductory essay by the editor were (with two exceptions) all originally written for the volume. The volume serves a twofold purpose, historical and systematic. One focus is on Bertrand Russell's logic and logical philosophy, taking into account the rich sources of the Russell Archives, many of which have become available only recently. The second equally important aim is to present original research in the broad range of foundational studies that draws on both current conceptions and recent technical advances in the above-mentioned fields. The volume contributes therefore, to the well-established body of mathematical philosophy initiated to a large extent by Russell's work.
