Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Dielectric Constants of Pure Solvents: A Thesis In 1893 Nernst,1 from theoretical considerations based upon the theory of electrolytic dissociation, deduced his well known rule, that - other things being equal - the greater the dielectric constant of a medium the greater is its dissociating power. In the same year J. J. Thomson2 also pointed out this relation, saying that if we accept the view that the forces between_the atoms are electrical in their origin then the effect of surrounding the molecules of a substance by a medium possessing a very high dielectric constant like water, would be to practically dis sociate them. According to N ernst, proportionality between the dielectric constant and dissociating power need not necessarily exist, but a close parallelism between the two doubtless pre vails. He adds that other factors besides the dielectric constant doubtless exist, which probably influence the dissociating power of the solvent. The experimental facts, Nemst3 says, show beyond a doubt that a marked parallelism exists between the dis sociating power and the dielectric constant. Exceptions to the rule he explains by assuming the existence of specific influences, of which the association of the ions with the molecules of the solvent is probably of prime importance. Book Designing Electrolytes for Lithium Ion and Post Lithium Batteries

Download or read book Designing Electrolytes for Lithium Ion and Post Lithium Batteries written by Władysław Wieczorek and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every electrochemical source of electric current is composed of two electrodes with an electrolyte in between. Since storage capacity depends predominantly on the composition and design of the electrodes, most research and development efforts have been focused on them. Considerably less attention has been paid to the electrolyte, a battery’s basic component. This book fills this gap and shines more light on the role of electrolytes in modern batteries. Today, limitations in lithium-ion batteries result from non-optimal properties of commercial electrolytes as well as scientific and engineering challenges related to novel electrolytes for improved lithium-ion as well as future post-lithium batteries.

This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 3382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1 Introduction Data extract from Landolt-Börnstein IV/17: Static Dielectric Constants of Pure Liquids and Binary Liquid Mixtures 1. 1 Selection of data This supplement updates Landolt-Börnstein's New Series Group IV (Physical Chemistry) Volume 6, Static Dielectric Constants of Pure Liquids and Binary Liquid Mixtures, published in the year 1991 [1991WOH1]. The update provides experimental data published in the years 1991 to 2006. The ?nal date for including data was December, 31st, 2006. Specialization and selection of data for this new update follows the intentions of the original volume. The focus is on non-electrolyte systems, and only data for pure liquids and binary liquid mixtures at normal pr- sure (or in some single cases at the saturation vapor pressure) were taken into account for this volume. No data at higher pressures were collected, no data for the gaseous state, and no data for dielectric relaxation processes at higher frequencies have been included. For mixtures, this data collection is restricted to binary liquid mixtures, i. e. no ternary systems and also no solutions of any solids, salts, electrolytes, polymers are included here. At least, also molten metals and metallic alloys, molten salts, molten glasses and other hi- temperature melts were not taken into account. As the amount of data collected between 1991 and 2006 exceeds the available space for printing by far, the volume has an electronic version containing additional data which is available on www. landolt-boernstein.

Book Conductivity and Viscosity in Mixed Solvents

Download or read book Conductivity and Viscosity in Mixed Solvents written by Harry C. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conductivity and Viscosity in Mixed Solvents: A Study of the Conductivity and Viscosity of Solutions of Certain Electrolytes in Water, Methyl Alcohol, Ethyl Alcohol, and Acetone, and in Binary Mixtures of These Solvents The earlier work in physical chemistry had to deal almost exclusively with aqueous solutions. This was due to the fact that water is by far the most universal solvent. It dissolves a much larger number of substances than any other known liquid. Further, water has greater power to break molecules down into ions than any other common solvent. For these reasons water is the most important solvent chemically; indeed, chemistry is largely a science of aqueous solutions. Again, water, of all the common solvents, is the most easily obtained, and in a fair degree of purity. These are some of the reasons why solutions in water as the solvent were studied first.
