Book Neither Poverty Nor Riches

Download or read book Neither Poverty Nor Riches written by Craig L Blomberg and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most difficult questions facing us today is that of the proper attitude toward possessions. In wealthy nations such as Britain and the USA, individuals accumulate much and yet are daily exposed to the plight of the poor, whether the homeless on their own city streets or starving children on their TV screens. What action should they take on behalf of the poor? What should they do with their own possessions? In Neither Poverty nor Riches Craig Blomberg asks what the Bible has to say to these issues. He avoids easy answers, and instead seeks a comprehensive biblical theology of possessions. Beginning with the groundwork laid by the Old Testament and the ideas developed in the intertestamental period, he draws out what the whole New Testament has to say on the subject and finally offers conclusions and applications relevant to the modern world. This is a book that all concerned with issues of poverty and wealth should read.

Book The God of Old

  • Author : Greg Forbes
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2000-10-01
  • ISBN : 1441118799
  • Pages : 393 pages

Download or read book The God of Old written by Greg Forbes and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the parables unique to the Third Gospel, aiming in particular to establish a link between Luke's choice of these parables and his overall purpose in writing. In comparison to the synoptic kingdom parables, one distinguishing feature of the Lukan parables is their more personal portrait of the character and the nature of God himself. Luke's desire is to demonstrate to his readers, whoever they are, that in Christianity the realization of the Jewish hope has occurred. The parables promote this idea by offering both continuity (OT) and contrast (contemporary Judaism) in their portrait of God. Thus, as well as operating in a parenetic sense, the parables also help to legitimize Luke's argument regarding fulfilment.

This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CHAPTER VI THE VARIATIONS IN THE GOSPELS TOUCH- ING JESUS' TEACHINGS ON WEALTH Before we can consider the attitude of Jesus to his country's unhappy condition and his plan for its social redemption, if he had such a plan, it is necessary to give some thought to certain variations that are found in the gospels. No one who has carefully read them has failed to notice the different impressions they give as to Jesus' attitude to questions of material possession. If he reads John's gospel, he gets the impression that he paid no attention to it. If he reads the gospel of Mark, he concludes that he paid some attention to it. Matthew's gospel leads one to believe that his interest in it was very considerable, while in Luke's gospel questions of property are given a prominent place. The gospel of Luke contains practically everything that relates to material possession which is found in the other gospels. In addition to that, it tells concerning the birth of Christ in a manger; the sacrifice by his parents of two young pigeons, which was the poor people's sacrifice; the song of Mary, containing the sentiment, He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away (Luke i. 52, 53); the sermon at Nazareth, in which Jesus said that he came to preach the gospel to the poor (iv. 16-20); the saying that the laborer is worthy of his hire (x. 7); the injunction to the Pharisees to give alms of such things as they could (xi. 41); the command, Sell that thou hast and give alms (xii. 33); the principle, Whosoever he be of you that renounceth not all that he hath cannot be my disciple (xiv. 33); the parable of the two debtors (vii. 36-50); that of the rich man who boasted of his goods ...

Book The Structure of Matthew s Gospel

Download or read book The Structure of Matthew s Gospel written by David Bauer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a central issue confronting the reader of the Gospel. Professor Bauer describes the impasse that has been reached in recent investigation of the structure of Matthew and demonstrates that an appreciation of literary design can provide a way forward. After identifying rhetorical features that relate to literary structure, he devotes the major part of his book to a systematic examination of such features as they appear in the Gospel in order to gain a fresh insight into the shape of the work. This study is valuable both for its comprehensive and judicious review of the question of structure in Matthew's Gospel and for the new direction which it establishes.
