In most of these cases young adults do not refer to people that are homosexual but most of the time to things they dislike. But why do they use this phrase so frequently? What was the original meaning of the word “gay” and do homosexuals see this phrase as an insult? In the following I am going to investigate the origin of the word “gay” and what young adults mean when the use phrases like “That's so gay” and how often they use this expression. Furthermore, I am going to deal with the impacts the use of the word “gay” in youth language might have on homosexuals and bisexuals and I will investigate if they feel insulted by this phrase. I conducted a survey in which 40 participants between the age of 16 and 28, half of them were male and the other half were female, were asked if they used phrases like “That's so gay” and if so, if they use it rarely, sometimes or frequently. They were also asked if they used this expression in a deprecative way and with which words they would equalize “gay” when they use it not to refer to homosexuality. Other questions in the survey were why they use it and if they think that homosexuals and bisexuals feel insulted by the use of the word. I am also going to compare my findings to the findings of other surveys.

The essays in this volume illustrate the findings of a European project on homophobia and fundamental rights in which sociologists and legal experts have analysed the position in four Member States: Italy, Slovenia, Hungary and the UK. The first part of the book investigates the sociological dimensions of homophobia through qualitative methods involving both heterosexual and self-defined lesbian and gay respondents, including those in ethnic communities. The aim is to understand how homophobia and homosexuality are defined and experienced in the everyday life of participants. The second part is devoted to a legal analysis of how homophobia is reproduced 'in law' and how it is confronted 'with law'. The analysis examines statute and case law; 'soft law'; administrative practices; the discussion of bills within parliamentary committees; and decisions of public authorities. Constructions of the imagined collective "self" often contain references to a heteronormative order, whereas relevant internal or external "others" are often felt to deviate from this order through their gendered or sexual practices. By contrast, some Western countries have witnessed the evolution of LGBTQI-friendly discourses by certain political actors in recent years, often in the context of the post-9/11 culture wars. This pathbreaking book focuses on perceptions of "self" and "other" in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from a gendered perspective. It deals with anti-LGBTQI as well as LGBTQI-friendly aspects of modern culture and politics in countries within these regions, focusing on the functions such discursive markers play in nationalist and racist imageries, in discourses legitimizing class differences from the nineteenth century to the present day, including globalized discourses in the context of 9/11 and its aftermath. It shows that discourses on sexuality and gendered performances in everyday life often undermine the stability of such binary constructions, as they point to the multiplicity, ambivalence and the indeterminate character of individual and collective identities under conditions of modernity. Addressing contemporary identity politics both in a wider historical context and within a transregional comparative framework thus helps to discern differences and similarities between different world regions and serves to dislocate essentialized notions of cultural differences based on gender and sex.
