Book Protist Diversity and Geographical Distribution

Download or read book Protist Diversity and Geographical Distribution written by W. Foissner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-24 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservation and biodiversity of protists The conservation of biodiversity is not just an issue of plants and vertebrates. It is the scarcely visible invertebrates and myriads of other microscopic organisms that are crucial to the maintenance of ecological processes on which all larger organisms and the composition of the atmosphere ultimately depend. Biodiversity and Conservation endeavours to take an holistic view of biodiversity, and when the opportunity arises to issue collections of papers dealing with too-often neglected groups of organisms. The protists, essentially eukaryotes that cannot be classi?ed in the kingdoms of animals, fungi, or plants, include some of the lea- known groups of organisms on earth. They are generally treated as a separate kingdom, commonly named Protista (or Protoctista) in textbooks, but in reality they are a mixture of organisms with disparate a?nities. Some authors have hypothesized that the numbers of protists are not especially large, and that many have extraordinarily wide distributions. However, the p- ture that unfolds from the latest studies discussed in this issue is di?erent. There are many species with wide ranges, and proportionately more cosmopolitan species than in macroorganism groups, as a result of their long evolutionary histories, but there are also de?nite patterns and geographical restrictions to be found. Further, some protists are linked to host organisms as mutualists or parasites and necessarily con?ned to the distributions of their hosts.

Download or read book The Diatoms written by John P. Smol and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much revised and expanded edition provides a valuable and detailed summary of the many uses of diatoms in a wide range of applications in the environmental and earth sciences. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of diatoms in analysing ecological problems related to climate change, acidification, eutrophication, and other pollution issues. The chapters are divided into sections for easy reference, with separate sections covering indicators in different aquatic environments. A final section explores diatom use in other fields of study such as forensics, oil and gas exploration, nanotechnology, and archaeology. Sixteen new chapters have been added since the first edition, including introductory chapters on diatom biology and the numerical approaches used by diatomists. The extensive glossary has also been expanded and now includes over 1,000 detailed entries, which will help non-specialists to use the book effectively.

Download or read book Australian Vegetation written by R. H. Groves and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-21 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian vegetation has interested botanists and naturalists since Europeans first encountered Australia and its plant life. This 1994 edition of Australian Vegetation reviews the vegetation of the continent as a whole. In the introductory section, chapters on phytogeography, vegetation history and alien plants set the scene for further sections covering all the major vegetation types. The plant life of extreme Australian habitats is also discussed, and the book closes with a chapter on the conservation of Australian vegetation. Each chapter, written by experts on each particular habitat type, will inform and stimulate the interests of students and professional botanists, especially those fortunate enough to see for themselves the unique vegetation and flora of Australia.

Book A Floristic Analysis of the Diatom Flora of Selected Rivers and Streams of the South west of Western Australia as Indicators of Water Quality

Download or read book A Floristic Analysis of the Diatom Flora of Selected Rivers and Streams of the South west of Western Australia as Indicators of Water Quality written by Arlete Lily Fernanda Nomboro and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The removal of riparian vegetation and the clearing of catchment forest for agriculture have caused severe degradation in many rivers of the south-west of Western Australia. A floristic analysis of the benthic diatoms has been carried out in four rivers and several streams of the south-west of Western Australia, with the objective of investigating the use of diatoms as possible indicators of water quality. Samples were collected in spring 1995 and autumn 1996 from a total of sixty (60) sampling sites located in the Donnelly, Margaret, Blackwood and Avon rivers. Forty-six (46) sampling sites located in the Donnelly, Blackwood and Avon rivers were sampled in spring 1995. In autumn 1996 forty (40) sampling sites located in the Donnelly, Margaret and Blackwood rivers were sampled. The physical parameters measured at these sampling sites included pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and stream velocity. Soluble reactive phosphorus was measured for the Blackwood River only. The selected sites had a pH range of 4.5 to 9.6 and salinity ranging from 112 and 2892 mg.l-1. One hundred and sixty-six (166) taxa of diatoms belonging to 52 most abundant genera were recorded including Navicula (18 taxa), Nitzschia (13 taxa), Achnanthes (1 1 taxa), Achnanthidium (2 taxa), Amphora (9 taxa), Eunotia (8 taxa), Hippodonta (1 taxon), Lemnicola (1 taxon), Pinnularia (8 taxa), Planothedium (2 taxa) and Psammothedium (1 taxon). The ecological preference and tolerance of the diatoms (pH, salinity and nutrient spectra) were compiled from the literature as well as inferred from the current study. The majority of the taxa were acidophilous to alkaliphilous, and oligohalobous to mesohalobous, indicative of mesotrophic to eutrophic water bodies. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to classify the sites. Most of the Donnelly sites that were relatively unimpacted were grouped together.

Download or read book Diatoms written by F. E. Round and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-12-04 with total page 1208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a wide-ranging introduction to the diatoms together with an illustrated description of over 250 genera. Diatoms are important as perhaps the commonest group of autotrophic plants on earth and are abundant in all waters and on soils and moist surfaces. The introduction describes the diatom cell in detail, the structure of the wall (often extremely beautiful in design), the cell contents and aspects of life cycle and cell division. The generic atlas section is the first account of diatom systematics since 1928 (Karsten in Engler and Prantl: Die Nauturlichen Pflanzenfamilien) and each generic description is accompanied by scanning electron micrographs to show the characteristic structure. Most of the latter have been prepared specially for this work from the authors' own collections. The Diatoms will be the standard reference work on the group for years to come and is an essential reference volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sight is more beautiful than a high-energy beach facing lines of rolling white breakers? What battleground is more ferocious than where waves and sand meet? What environment could be more exciting to study than this sandy interface between sea and land? And yet how much do we know about sandy beaches? Open sandy beaches are amongst the most neglected fields of scientific study in the coastal environment. This situation exists despite their great extent along most temperate and tropical coastlines and their value as recreational areas and buffer zones against the sea. The traditional oceanographer does not venture into the surf zone while the terrestrial ecologist stops short at the high water mark. Only a few coastal engineers have grappled with the problem of sand and sediment movement as it influences their construction of harbours and pipelines. The marine biologist on the other hand has regarded estuaries, coral reefs and rocky shores, obviously teeming with life, as more fruitful areas for study than the apparently poor animal life on sandy beaches. Sandy beaches have therefore tended to become a scientific no man's land. Over the last decade this situation has begun to improve. Recent work on high-energy beaches has revealed that they may in fact be rich and productive and fertile areas for study. It has even been suggested that beaches and their adjacent surf zones may constitute viable marine ecosystems.
