Excerpt: ... found in bed ill, but to me it appeared that fright more than anything else had thrown him on his back; numbers of other officers of the Commissariat are laid up, and altogether the department, according to the accounts of the officers themselves, is in a very deplorable, inefficient state; but they say, very properly, that the fault does not lie with any individual, but with the system, or rather want of system in every respect. The English public expect impossibilities, they require men to work as efficiently without, as with tools; they expect our Commissariat officers, who have heretofore acted merely as storekeepers, to make arrangements for transport of every description, as readily as the French who have a regularly organized Commissariat, with a splendid baggage train brought from France, while we have nothing of the kind, but have to depend on the poor transport to be obtained in the country; a difficult matter at present, and then half the Commissaiiat officers are wholly unacquainted with their work, having been but lately appointed, and most of them fall sick before they commence their duties. Wednesday, August 9th.--Again delighted with a ride I took with W. B. and Bazalgette this afternoon, the scenery is beautiful, the only fault to be found with it, is the want of fine trees. The hills are all covered with very low scrubby trees, indicative, I presume, of poor soil, though that on the plain seems rich enough. Our chief object in going out was for a bathe in a tank, about six or seven miles from the 95th encampment.
