Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of Philip Hone, Vol. 2 of 2: 1828-1851 Anuary 1. - Another year has passed, and it would be well if the black lines of Benton, the great expunger, could be drawn around 1839 in the calendar. It has been marked by indi vidual and national distress in an unprecedented degree, the effect of improvidence and a want of sound moral and political princi ples on the part of the mass of the people, and bad government and a crushing down of everything good and great to subserve party objects on the part of the rulers. Book The Diary of Philip Hone Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Diary of Philip Hone Vol 1 of 2 written by Bayard Tuckerman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of Philip Hone, Vol. 1 of 2: 1828-1851 Philip Hone was born on the 25th of October, 1780, in Dutch street, New York. Four years later his father bought a wooden house, on the corner of Dutch and John streets, where Philip passed his boyhood. He received a common-school education, and at seventeen years of age began his mercantile career as clerk to his elder brother John. The business was that of an auctioneer, which, at that time, consisted chiefly in selling the cargoes brought to the port of New York by the fleet of American merchantmen. Philip displayed so much ability and fidelity in his work, that in 1799, when nineteen years of age, his brother took him into partnership. The firm became extremely prosperous, and bore an honoured name throughout the United States. On the 1st of October, 1801, in his twenty-second year, Mr. Hone married Catherine Dunscomb, by whom he had three sons and three daughters. In 1820, Mr. Hone, although only forty years of age, had accumulated a fortune then considered very large. His mature life still lay before him, and the choice was open as to the manner in which it should be spent. With no love of money for money's sake, with a sincere desire to improve himself and to be useful to others, he retired from business, in the flood-tide of his powers and his prosperity, to enter a higher sphere of effort. In 1821 he sailed for Europe in the "James Monroe," Captain Rogers, of four hundred tons burden. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book When America First Met China An Exotic History of Tea Drugs and Money in the Age of Sail

Download or read book When America First Met China An Exotic History of Tea Drugs and Money in the Age of Sail written by Eric Jay Dolin and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient China collides with newfangled America in this epic tale of opium smugglers, sea pirates, and dueling clipper ships. Brilliantly illuminating one of the least-understood areas of American history, best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin now traces our fraught relationship with China back to its roots: the unforgiving nineteenth-century seas that separated a brash, rising naval power from a battered ancient empire. It is a prescient fable for our time, one that surprisingly continues to shed light on our modern relationship with China. Indeed, the furious trade in furs, opium, and bêche-de-mer—a rare sea cucumber delicacy—might have catalyzed America’s emerging economy, but it also sparked an ecological and human rights catastrophe of such epic proportions that the reverberations can still be felt today. Peopled with fascinating characters—from the “Financier of the Revolution” Robert Morris to the Chinese emperor Qianlong, who considered foreigners inferior beings—this page-turning saga of pirates and politicians, coolies and concubines becomes a must-read for any fan of Nathaniel Philbrick’s Mayflower or Mark Kurlansky’s Cod.

Book The Columbia Documentary History of Race and Ethnicity in America

This book was released on 2004-07-14 with total page 1023 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All historians would agree that America is a nation of nations. But what does that mean in terms of the issues that have moved and shaped us as a people? Contemporary concerns such as bilingualism, incorporation/assimilation, dual identity, ethnic politics, quotas and affirmative action, residential segregation, and the volume of immigration resonate with a past that has confronted variations of these modern issues. The Columbia Documentary History of Race and Ethnicity in America, written and compiled by a highly respected team of American historians under the editorship of Ronald Bayor, illuminates the myriad ways in which immigration, racial, and ethnic histories have shaped the contours of contemporary American society. This invaluable resource documents all eras of the American past, including black–white interactions and the broad spectrum of American attitudes and reactions concerning Native Americans, Irish Catholics, Mexican Americans, Jewish Americans, and other groups. Each of the eight chronological chapters contains a survey essay, an annotated bibliography, and 20 to 30 related public and private primary source documents, including manifestos, speeches, court cases, letters, memoirs, and much more. From the 1655 petition of Jewish merchants regarding the admission of Jews to the New Netherlands colony to an interview with a Chinese American worker regarding a 1938 strike in San Francisco, documents are drawn from a variety of sources and allow students and others direct access to our past. Selections include Powhatan to John Smith, 1609 Thomas Jefferson—"Notes on the State of Virginia" Petition of the Trustees of Congregation Shearith Israel, 1811 Bessie Conway or, The Irish Girl in America German Society in Chicago, Annual Report, 1857–1858. Book At the Edge of the Precipice

Download or read book At the Edge of the Precipice written by Robert V. Remini and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1850, America hovered on the brink of disunion. Tensions between slave-holders and abolitionists mounted, as the debate over slavery grew rancorous. An influx of new territory prompted Northern politicians to demand that new states remain free; in response, Southerners baldly threatened to secede from the Union. Only Henry Clay could keep the nation together. At the Edge of the Precipice is historian Robert V. Remini's fascinating recounting of the Compromise of 1850, a titanic act of political will that only a skillful statesman like Clay could broker. Although the Compromise would collapse ten years later, plunging the nation into civil war, Clay's victory in 1850 ultimately saved the Union by giving the North an extra decade to industrialize and prepare. A masterful narrative by an eminent historian, At the Edge of the Precipice also offers a timely reminder of the importance of bipartisanship in a bellicose age.

Realizing that everyone's use of language is as distinctive as his or her DNA, Foster developed a revolutionary methodology for identifying the writer behind almost any anonymous document. Now, in this enthralling book, he explains his techniques and invites readers to sit by his side as he searches a mysterious text for the clues that whisper the author's name. Book The First Populist

Download or read book The First Populist written by David S. Brown and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-05-16 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely, “solidly researched [and] gracefully written” (The Wall Street Journal) biography of President Andrew Jackson that offers a fresh reexamination of this charismatic figure in the context of American populism—connecting the complex man and the politician to a longer history of division, dissent, and partisanship that has come to define our current times. Andrew Jackson rose from rural poverty in the Carolinas to become the dominant figure in American politics between Jefferson and Lincoln. His reputation, however, defies easy description. Some regard him as the symbol of a powerful democratic movement that saw early 19th-century voting rights expanded for propertyless white men. Others stress Jackson’s prominent role in removing Native American peoples from their ancestral lands, which then became the center of a thriving southern cotton kingdom worked by more than a million enslaved people. A combative, self-defined champion of “farmers, mechanics, and laborers,” Jackson railed against East Coast elites and Virginia aristocracy, fostering a brand of democracy that struck a chord with the common man and helped catapult him into the presidency. “The General,” as he was known, was the first president to be born of humble origins, first orphan, and thus far the only former prisoner of war to occupy the office. Drawing on a wide range of sources, The First Populist takes a fresh look at Jackson’s public career, including the pivotal Battle of New Orleans (1815) and the bitterly fought Bank War; it reveals his marriage to an already married woman and a deadly duel with a Nashville dandy, and analyzes his magnetic hold on the public imagination of the country in the decades between the War of 1812 and the Civil War. “By assessing the frequent comparisons between Jackson and Donald Trump…the hope is that a fresh understanding of the divisive times of ‘the country’s original anti-establishment president’ might shed light on our own” (The Christian Science Monitor).
