Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of Abraham De La Pryme: The Yorkshire Antiquary In a work of this kind, involving for its elucidation references to so many scattered. Sources, so many old records, and so many manuscript authorities, errors are inevitable. I will only add that I have done my best to explain, for the Surtees Society and the Public, the obscurities which Time has thrown over the observable things recorded in this Diary by one who in his day was a remarkable man. Vincent Skinner's only son William Skinner, esq., of Thornton College, who died 7th Aug., 1627, set. 32, married Bridget, 2nd daughter of the celebrated Sir Edward Coke, Chief Justice of England, by whom he had, besides five daughters, three sons, viz: Edward, who died in 1657, having married Anne, daughter of Sir William Wentworth; William, baptised at Thornton, 30th April, 1626, regarding whom nothing that I am aware of has been ascertained further than that in his mother's will, 1648, she alludes to him as a " most undutiful son," and also that he was living in 1657, when he occurs as a legatee of 50Z. in his brother Edward's will; and Cyriack, born after his father's death in 1627, and hence so named probably as if he was peculiarly a gift from the Lord. He was entered of Trinity College, Oxford, in 1640, was an author and a man of letters, but appears to have settled down as a merchant in London, where he died in 1700. He was a friend and pupil of the immortal Milton. De la Pryme, in a previous part of his Diary (p. 160 MS.), has made an extract from the preface to the Eti/mologia Linjuce Angllcana, wherein, as he says, " the learned and ingenious Mr. Skinner, a great crittic himself, has thus excellently in short characterized a crittic." This, however, was Stephen Skinner, a physician, who died at Lincoln, 5th September, 1667. I suspect that Cyriack Skinner was the contributor to the Diarist of the inscriptions here mentioned, whilst probably on a visit at Brocklesby. ' Sic orig. But I am informed that this monument is on the north wall of the chancel. There were many coats of arms about this monument which he has not sent. Book Language and Social Relations in Early Modern England

Download or read book Language and Social Relations in Early Modern England written by Hillary Taylor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-08-26 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What was the interrelation between language, power, and socio-economic inequality in England, c. 1550-1750? Early modern England was a hierarchical society that placed considerable emphasis on order; language was bound up with the various structures of authority that made up the polity. Members of the labouring population were expected to accept their place, defer to their superiors, and refrain from 'murmuring' about a host of issues. While some early modern labouring people fulfilled these expectations, others did not; because of their defiance, the latter were more likely to make their way into the historical record, and historians have previously used the evidence that they generated to reconstruct various forms of resistance and negotiation involved in everyday social relations. Hillary Taylor instead considers the limits that class power placed on popular expression, and with what implications. Using a wide variety of sources, Taylor examines how members of the early modern English labouring population could be made to speak in ways that reflected and even seemed to justify their subordinated positions--both in their eyes and those of their social superiors. By reconstructing how class power structured and limited popular expression, this study not only presents a new interpretation of how inequality was normalized over the course of the period, but also sheds new light on the constraints that labouring people overcame when they engaged in individual or collective acts of defiance against their 'betters.' It revives domination and subordination as objects of inquiry and demonstrates the ways in which language--at the levels of ideology and social practice--reflected, reproduced, and naturalized inequality over the course of the early modern period.

Book When Geologists Were Historians 1665 1750

Download or read book When Geologists Were Historians 1665 1750 written by Rhoda Rappaport and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-05 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An essential perspective for those seeking a serious introduction to early geological science and a fundamental point of departure for future research.... No other book has this scope and conceptual focus."—Kenneth L. Taylor, University of OklahomaIn the years between 1665 and 1750, geology was a new kind of science, combining physical law with historical process. Rhoda Rappaport explains its novelty and provides a transnational account of the development of geological thinking. She begins with the establishment of formal institutions of international exchange, including the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London and the Journal des savants in Paris, and shows how new media fostered increasing communication among scientists, particularly in England, France, and Italy. Early geological thinking was thoroughly integrated with epistemology, historical and biblical scholarship, natural philosophy, and natural history. Ancient written documents supplemented what was called "physical conjecture," providing human witnesses to past events. How to combine elements of law, empirical observations, and texts posed serious problems in debates about the biblical flood, which Rappaport presents as a prime example of a well-attested historical event. Buffon argued forcefully that geology should be wholly a physical science and that historical texts were irrelevant to the reconstruction of physical processes. Rappaport explains how his contemporaries responded to this novel proposal and how Buffon heralded the end of an era.
