This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diary of a Young Officer, Serving With the Armies of the United, States During the War of the Rebellion, 1909 The publication of this diary is due to the solicitations of one, alas! no longer with us, who took much pleasure in reading the original manuscript, and frequently urged the publication of it in book form for the pleasure of those who participated in the movements described. Anything that is authentic and comes to us in its original form pertaining to the great drama of the Civil War is still of interest to a very considerable number of those who love their country and delight in heroic deeds; and these pages, simple though they be, and relating generally to matters within a narrow compass, may be therefore of interest to others than the participators in the stirring scenes described. The diary is, in truth, what it purports to be, with only trifling changes, mostly of omission, the daily record of active campaigning recorded at the time by one who was himself an active participator in the great struggle for the preservation of the Union, 1861-65, in the ranks of that mighty host which fought and died for the life of our beloved country. The opinions expressed are those of that time and are perhaps of no importance, but are allowed to stand as curiosities of the times. From my own knowledge of the making of history in official reports, I can affirm that something in the interest of truth may be found in these pages that may perhaps in the future be worthy the notice of the dignified historian. Many official reports are decorated with after thoughts, and some of them made to show things as they should have been, and not as they were. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a war of brother versus brother, theirs has become the most famous broken friendship: Union general Winfield Scott Hancock and Confederate general Lewis Armistead. Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels (1974) and the movie Gettysburg (1993), based on the novel, presented a close friendship sundered by war, but history reveals something different from the legend that holds up Hancock and Armistead as sentimental symbols of a nation torn apart. In this deeply researched book, Tom McMillan sets the record straight. Even if their relationship wasn’t as close as the legend has it, Hancock and Armistead knew each other well before the Civil War. Armistead was seven years older, but in a small prewar army where everyone seemed to know everyone else, Hancock and Armistead crossed paths at a fort in Indian Territory before the Mexican War and then served together in California, becoming friends—and they emotionally parted ways when the Civil War broke out. Their lives wouldn’t intersect again until Gettysburg, when they faced each other during Pickett’s Charge. Armistead died of his wounds at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863; Hancock went on to be the Democratic nominee for president in 1880, losing to James Garfield. Part dual biography and part Civil War history, Armistead and Hancock: Behind the Gettysburg Legend clarifies the historic record with new information and fresh perspective, reversing decades of misconceptions about an amazing story of two friends that has defined the Civil War.

Book The Diary of a Young Officer During the War of the Rebellion

Download or read book The Diary of a Young Officer During the War of the Rebellion written by Josiah Favill and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BULL RUN, ANTIETAM, CHANCELLORSVILLE, THE WILDERNESS, SPOTSYLVANIA, AND MORE One of the first to answer Lincoln's call for volunteers to put down the rebellion of the southern states, Josiah Favill fought at Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania and other battles. Wounded twice, he served to the end of the war in the presence of some of the most famous commanders of the conflict. Favill made insightful and candid assessments of the commanders and peers with whom he served, some of which may surprise you. He was never as enamored of McClellan as so many of his comrades were, though he initially had high hopes for Little Mac. Along the way, Josiah never grew inured to the sights and sounds of war. Though he believed fervently in the rightness of the cause, he repeatedly recorded the horror of seeing men destroyed and he felt a sense of a melancholy over what the terrible destruction of war said about humanity. But he also wrote of much humor and the great comradeship of his brothers in arms. At the end of the war, the young officer was not yet 24 years old. Cited by historians, Favill's diary paints a vivid and colorful portrait of one young officer's experiences during the defining event of his life.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Lieutenant: Or, the Adventures of an Army Officer; A Story of Great Rebellion This volume is a sequel to "The Soldier Boy;" and, though the leading character is the same in both books, there is no necessary connection between them, each forming an independent story. The material for the work, so far as its historical relations are concerned, has been derived from authentic sources; not from books and papers only, but from intelligent and reliable persons who participated in the stirring scenes of which they gave testimony. The author especially acknowledges his indebtedness to Captain William V. Munroe, late of the Eleventh Massachusetts Regiment, for details of the Peninsular Campaign; and to Captain Henry N. Blake, author of "Three Years in the Army of the Potomac," for valuable information relative to the movements of General Hooker's Division. Like "The Soldier Boy," this book is a narrative of personal adventure, rather than a connected historical account of the operations before Richmond; though, so far as positions and movements of the army are introduced, they are based upon reliable information. Book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps

Download or read book Getting the message through A Branch History of the U S Army Signal Corps written by Rebecca Robbins Raines and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 1996 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Getting the Message Through, the companion volume to Rebecca Robbins Raines' Signal Corps, traces the evolution of the corps from the appointment of the first signal officer on the eve of the Civil War, through its stages of growth and change, to its service in Operation DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM. Raines highlights not only the increasingly specialized nature of warfare and the rise of sophisticated communications technology, but also such diverse missions as weather reporting and military aviation. Information dominance in the form of superior communications is considered to be sine qua non to modern warfare. As Raines ably shows, the Signal Corps--once considered by some Army officers to be of little or no military value--and the communications it provides have become integral to all aspects of military operations on modern digitized battlefields. The volume is an invaluable reference source for anyone interested in the institutional history of the branch.
