Book A Mother s Diary

Download or read book A Mother s Diary written by Menetra Hathorn and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005-02-17 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mother's Diary: How to Survive the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a firsthand account of one woman's journey. It represents the struggle of thousands of women every year whose babies begin life in the N.I.C.U. Menetra Hathorn writes the entire book from her perspective - a mother's point of view. She begins by introducing you, the reader, to her world and giving some background information about how her journey began. Next, you walk with her the rest of the way - through a slow and tedious hospitalization. Then, she names and discusses 10 strategies that will help you survive the N.I.C.U. (and beyond). Finally, she shares some valuable insight with relatives and friends while recommending a variety of ways that they can help. A Mother's Diary: How to Survive the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit was written because Mrs. Hathorn was unable to find anything like it during her third child's 119-day hospitalization. She wanted to know that she wasn't alone, and she needed some common sense strategies she could implement to help save herself from drowning in a sea of grief, depression, and anxiety.

The contributors to this volume examine theories and interpretations relating to writing and studying diaries; the formation of diary canons in the United Kingdom, France, United States, and Brazil; and the ways in which handwritten diaries are transformed through processes of publication and digitization. The authors also explore different diary formats, including the travel diary, the private diary, conflict diaries written during periods of crisis, and the diaries of the digital era, such as blogs. Book Sugar rush

  • Author : Karen Throsby
  • Publisher : Manchester University Press
  • Release : 2023-06-20
  • ISBN : 1526151537
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book Sugar rush written by Karen Throsby and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second decade of the twenty-first century, the crusade against sugar rose to prominence as an urgent societal problem about which something needed to be done. Sugar was transformed into the common enemy in a revived ‘war on obesity’ levelled at ‘unhealthy’ foods and the people who enjoy them. Are the evils of sugar based on purely scientific fact, or are other forces at play? Sugar rush explores the social life of sugar in its rise to infamy. The book reveals how competing understandings of the ‘problem’ of sugar are smoothed over through appeals to science and the demonization of fatness, with politics and popular culture preying on our anxieties about what we eat. Drawing on journalism, government policy, public health campaigns, self-help books, autobiographies and documentaries, the book argues that this rush to blame sugar is a phenomenon of its time, finding fertile ground in the era of austerity and its attendant inequalities. Inviting readers to resist the comforting certainties of the attack on sugar, Sugar rush shows how this actually represents a politics of despair, entrenching rather than disrupting the inequality-riddled status quo.

Book The Deshima Diaries

Download or read book The Deshima Diaries written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 941 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English translation of the marginalia, or marginal notes, that were added to the text of the Deshima Diaries from the 1670's onwards in order to provide the Dutch chief of Deshima with a quick reference to the notes of his predecessors. This volume covers the marginalia from the 1740-4800 diaries. Providing the general public, and especially those who have neither a command of Dutch nor of Japanese access to a fascinating period of Japanese history in which the Dutch played such a singular role. At the same time, the serious scholar wil obtain an easy key to the extremely rich holdings of the archive of the Deshima trading factory, which covers a shelf length of more than forty meters in the National Archives in the Netherlands, but which has been only rarely utilized by historians, Japanologists or other scholars. In the 1740s, the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was in many ways at the height of its power. The second half of the 18th century saw the decline of the Company from being the high and mighty - and only - trading company which covered from its base in Batavia (Jakarta) all of Asia with a network that stretched from Basra in Persia to Nagasaki in Japan, to becoming a mere shadow of its former self with only a tenous hold on a few possessions in the Indonesian archipelago. By the end of the century, it had lost its establishments in South Africa, India and Ceylon to the British, and its flleet was gone. However, as a trading company, it was dead, but as a proto-colonial producer it was actually doing quite well. The basis of the present text are the Deshima Dagregisters: their original tables of contents, Vol. VII (1740-1760), Vol. VIII (1760-1780), Vol. IX (1780-1790), Vol. X (1790-1800) published in the Intercontinenta Series Nos. 18 (1993), 19 (1995), 20 (1996), and 21 (1997) by the Institute for the History of European Expansion at Leiden University. Scientific Publications of the Japan-Netherlands Institute No. 21. Published by the Japan-Netherlands Institute, Tokyo 2004 (original ISBN 4930921066).
