Book Tchaikovsky s Last Days

Download or read book Tchaikovsky s Last Days written by Alexander Poznansky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-10-31 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tchaikovsky's death in October 1893 in St Petersburg, shortly after the première of his sixth symphony, the `Pathétique', is one of the most thoroughly documented deaths of a prominent cultural figure in modern times. He was treated by no fewer than four physicians and surrounded by a group of relatives and friends. The official account of his death was that he died from cholera, possibly by drinking infected water, but almost since the day of his death there have been rumours that it was not accidental. It is alleged by some that Tchaikovsky either committed suicide or was murdered in order to avoid the scandal and disgrace of being unmasked as a homosexual. Alexander Poznansky is the first Western scholar to have gained access to the Tchaikovsky archives in Klin, Russia. He provides much hitherto unknown documentary material - memoirs, diary entries, letters, and newspaper reports - and adds his own commentary on the status of homosexuality in nineteenth-century Russia and on the various conspiracy theories that have been advanced to account for Tchaikovsky's death. His conclusion is that there is no factual evidence to support the notion that Tchaikovsky's death was caused by anything other than cholera.

Book excerpt: Music, passion, and mystery. The world's greatest composer. His personal story finally told.... The mysterious death of the nineteenth-century composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky is still unsolved to this day and this unusual novel brings to life the private, illegal trial against him and takes the reader through his astounding life as never before. His unlawful sexuality and shy demeanor are at odds with his music and notoriety. Will society forgive him, or will fate have the last word? A realistic adult novel with a stunning ending. Watch the BOOK VIDEO TRAILER at www.pyotrilyich.comBook Jacket:Saint Petersburg, 1893. In the dimly lit salon of a private house, the composer Tchaikovsky watches as an illegal jury considers his alleged crimes of licentious behavior. He hastily agrees to abide by their orders to swallow poison rather then face allegations in the official courts, but is terrified by the reality of the situation. As he considers how his life has led him to this point, a dark tale emerges. Tchaikovsky's immense fame, unlawful sexuality, mysterious death, and the splendid music which surrounds it all paint a unique and intriguing portrait of one of the most beloved composers of all time. Can he find a way out of the web of revenge and deceit, or will fate have the last word? 'BRAVOS' FOR PYOTR ILYICH "...with the sense of time and place that Adin Dalton creates, the novel has great emotional impact." -The Kindle Book Review "It is a work of art, written in novel style rather than non fiction, and it works extremely well." -The Online Book Club

I knew it would be so, and that the poor Frenchman would take it deeply to heart, so I did not wish to be a witness of his disappointment. But also I did not want to interrupt my work." Tchaikovsky stayed at Maidanovo to complete the instrumentation of the whole score of The Enchantress, and left on May 9th to visit his sick friend, Kondratiev, before starting on his journey to the Caucasus. XIII To N. F. von Meek. "the Caspian Sea, May rilk June tfh), i&Sj. "I left Moscow on the 20th. At Xijni-Xovogorod I had great trouble in securing a second-class ticket for the steamer, Alexander II. This steamer is considered the best, and is therefore always full. My quarters were very small and uncomfortable, but I enjoyed the journey down the Volga. It was almost high tide, and therefore the banks were so far away that one could almost imagine oneself at sea. Mother Volga is sublimely poetical. The right bank is hilly, and there are many beautiful bits of scenery, but in this respect the Volga cannot compare with the Rhine, nor even with the Danube and Rhone. Its beauty does not lie in its banks, but in its unbounded width and in the extraordinary volume of its waters, which roll down to the sea without any motion. We stopped at the towns on the way just long enough to get an idea of them. Samara and the little town of Volsk pleased me best, the latter having the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen. We reached Astrakhan on the fifth day. Here we boarded J little steamer, which brought us to the spot where the mouth of the Volga debouches into the open sea, where 've embarked on a schooner, on board which we have been or the last two days. The Caspian Sea has been very: reacherous. It was so storiy during the night that I fas quite...
