Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diamond: A Present for Young People Isabel had formed great anticipations of pleasure from this evening, but as is often the case, they were more agreeable than the re ality. The idea that her cousin, less beautiful and less richly-dressed than herself, should at tract more attention, perplexed her extremely and gave her much uneasiness. She sat com paring herself and Lucy, till she became so discontented and unhappy, that she heartily wished she had stayed at home. Whenever Lucy resumed her seat, she addressed her kindly, and endeavoured to draw her into conversation, but her efforts were unavail ing, and Isabel remained silent and abstracted. At a late hour the company separated, and Isabel found herself once more in the pre sence of her mother. Fatigued, disappointed and vexed, she could scarcely restrain her tears; but making an effort to subdue her feelings, she informed her of what she had noticed. Book The Diamond Lens and Other Stories

Download or read book The Diamond Lens and Other Stories written by Fitz-James O'Brien and published by Hesperus Press. This book was released on 2023-12-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An absorbing and haunting collection of early science fiction tales by an Irish-American author Fitz-James O'Brien capitalized on the success of his predecessors Edgar Allan Poe and Mary Shelley in writing disturbing stories with demented protagonists, and this collection of three tales shows his mastery of the macabre. "The Diamond Lens" tells of a lone scientist's discovery of a microcosmic world within a drop of water, and his growing obsession with the beautiful Animula, a fair maiden within this world which he can see but never enter. His uncompromising pursuit of knowledge at any cost foreshadows the mad scientist familiar to readers in a multitude of works. In "What Was It?" an invisible man is discovered by residents of a boarding house. The residents' capture and investigation of the creature blends the fantastic with the scientific as they seek rational explanations for this extraordinary phenomenon. "The Wondersmith" is a macabre tale of an embittered toymaker who seeks revenge upon the society that has persecuted him by creating demonic mannequins and imbuing them with life in order to slaughter the masses— a fantastic melodrama in which the cunning Wondersmith is offset by the unassuming and unlikely hero Solon the hunchback, in love with the villain's daughter.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Diamond Necklace: Confessions of the Countless De La Motte Elizabeth, of Vienna, my grandmother, born at Bar-sur-Seine, had formed a particular intimacy with a lady of the same place, and of a similar age and disposition; Elizabeth had one son and her friend a daughter. Both of these children were very young when their mothers friendship commenced, and they resolved to perpetuate their amicable intercourse by a matrimonial union between their children, and executed, accordingly, a contract for that purpose. The young pair were given to understand that they were destined for each other from the first moment they began to prattle; till at length the buds of friendship, cherished by frequent intercourse and strengthened by mutual endearments, ripened into love. In this situation, with all the transports which youthful minds feel at the prospect of approaching bliss, scarce had they attained the age of sixteen, when a sudden and most unaccountable disagreement between the parents clouded the sunshine of their felicity, and blasted their future hopes: the match was instantly broken off, and an immediate separation ensued. J o and Betty were sitting on the stone wall when the bear-boy came along the road, and their hearts had beat fast when he stopped and spoke to them. When they first saw him coming over the top of the hill they knew him, and they had hoped, for one exciting moment, that he had the bear with him, as he had on the day when he passed through Bunchberry Corner. Still, it was very delightful and wonderful even to have him come along on their road, and to have him stop to speak to them, and to look at him. Download or read book The Diamond as Big as the Ritz written by Francis Scott Fitzgerald and published by Strelbytskyy Multimedia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Diamond as Big as the Ritz is a novella by novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was first published in the June 1922 issue of The Smart Set magazine, and was included in Fitzgerald's 1922 short story collection Tales of the Jazz Age. Much of the story is set in Montana, a setting that may have been inspired by the summer that Fitzgerald spent near White Sulphur Springs, Montana in 1915. Orson Welles adapted the story into a radio play in 1945 and another version was presented three times on the program Escape between 1947 and 1949. A teleplay version was broadcast on Kraft Theatre in 1955. The story's sisters, Kismine and Jasmine, were portrayed by Lee Remick and Elizabeth Montgomery, who were unknowns of 20 and 22 at the time. Mickey Mouse No. 47 (Apr./May 1956) contains a retelling of Fitzgerald's story under the title "The Mystery of Diamond Mountain", scripted by William F. Nolan and Charles Beaumont and illustrated by Paul Murry. Jimmy Buffett recounts the story in the song "Diamond As Big As The Ritz" from his 1995 album Barometer Soup. Famous novells of the author F. S. Fitzgerald: "This Side of Paradise", "The Beautiful and Damned", "The Great Gatsby", "Tender Is the Night", "The Last Tycoon", "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", "May Day", "The Rich Boy".
