Book excerpt: Written by the authors that brought you the best-selling book, Go for No! their next inspiring fable has finally arrived. The Diamond Line is a clever re-imagining of the motivational classic, Acres of Diamonds, by Russell Conwell, first published as a book in 1890. Russell Conwell not only believed it was possible for any person to become rich-he believed it was a person's duty to do so. Furthermore, Conwell felt that each of us is standing in the middle of our acres of diamonds-that everything we need to achieve success and personal wealth is right beneath our feet-if only we are able to recognize it. In The Diamond Line, You will be taken back to an imaginary moment in time before the book was written, having the chance to meet some of the greatest icons in history, including PT Barnum, Andrew Carnegie, Frederick Douglass, and several other interesting and enlightening characters.

The life of a writer offers us glimpses into their world and insights into the history of their time that formed and informed their work. Their experiences are the foundation upon which the writer builds his or her ideas. In Humberto Cintron we find a skilled wordsmith who intimately understands the impact of structure, the emotional nuances of storytelling and how to apply these literary dynamics to communicate the passionate intensity of his intended message.

Book Handbook of Spectral Lines in Diamond

Download or read book Handbook of Spectral Lines in Diamond written by Bernhard Dischler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is a breakthrough in the understanding of the large number of spectral lines in diamond. Data on more than 2000 lines and bands are presented in 200 tables, including many unpublished results. With a novel organization scheme, the search for a specific line is greatly simplified as a benefit for researchers and students. In order to meet the interest in the understanding of the spectra, structure assignments for 80 % of the lines are given, of which 15 % only were published before. The majority of the structures for the 300 centers is explained in most cases for the first time. A key instrument in the interpretation is the analysis by donor-acceptor pair transitions. In a special chapter 95 such centers are listed and discussed, of which only two have been published before, the first one by the present author in 1994.

Book Nanodiamonds

Download or read book Nanodiamonds written by Jean-Charles Arnault and published by William Andrew. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanodiamonds: Advanced Material Analysis, Properties and Applications illustrates the complementarity of specific techniques to fully characterize nanodiamonds from their diamond core (crystalline structure, defects, sp2 carbon, impurities, strain) to their surface (surface chemistry, stability of surface groups, reactivity, surface charge, colloidal properties). The relationship between physical and chemical parameters sits at the heart of what this book is about. Recent advances in the synthesis of nanodiamonds either by HPHT or detonation are covered, along with extended characterization of the core and surface of nanodiamonds, focusing on the most advanced experimental tools developed for nanoscale diagnosis. Each technique presented includes presentation of both principles and applications. This combination of advanced characterizations offers readers a better understanding of the relationship that exists between physical and chemical parameters of nanodiamonds and their properties. In particular, the role of structural defects or chemical impurities is illustrated. Toxicity of nanodiamonds for cells is also discussed, as It is an essential issue for their bioapplications. Final sections in the book cover the main promising new advances and applications of nanodiamonds, the formation of hybrids, and their use in polymer and oil composites. Provides a focused analysis of the relationship between the physical, chemical parameters, and properties of nanodiamonds Allows the reader to better understand the material characterization of nanodiamonds and how they can be most successfully used Presents R&D scientists and engineers with the information they need to understand how nanodiamonds can be used to create more efficient products Includes novel applications, for example, the formation of hybrids based on nanodiamonds, that are covered in detail

Book excerpt: Annotation Optical spectroscopy represents one of the most powerful and useful investigation tools. Due to the broad range of applications in scientific and technological Research, its potential is very great. Among the large variety of its branches, a leading role is played by Raman spectroscopy that, allowing the non-destructive material characterisation, is the most-widely utilised diagnostic-tool in Research laboratories. An encounter opportunity for Researchers working in the Spectroscopy field is offered by the Conference organised by the National Group of Raman Spectroscopy and non-linear effects (GNSR). The GNSR Meeting represents an appointment, usually recurring every two years. Its main purpose is to act as a common forum for Spectroscopists, where the most recent and relevant Italian results and applications are presented. The GNSR Conference, hence, constitutes an opportunity for a stimulating exchange of ideas and experiences among the members of the lively Scientific Community involved, including a variety of Scientists, such as Physicists, Chemists, Engineers, Architects, Historians of Art, active in the field of Raman spectroscopy and non-linear effects. Offering the possibility of both divulging assessed results and exploring the feasibility of new projects, the GNSR Meeting promotes the advancement of Raman spectroscopy and related techniques not only in Research, but also in Industry and Education.

Book excerpt: The story of how a mixed-income minority community in Louisiana's Chemical Corridor fought Shell Oil and won. For years, the residents of Diamond, Louisiana, lived with an inescapable acrid, metallic smell—the "toxic bouquet" of pollution—and a mysterious chemical fog that seeped into their houses. They looked out on the massive Norco Industrial Complex: a maze of pipelines, stacks topped by flares burning off excess gas, and huge oil tankers moving up the Mississippi. They experienced headaches, stinging eyes, allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems, skin disorders, and cancers that they were convinced were caused by their proximity to heavy industry. Periodic industrial explosions damaged their houses and killed some of their neighbors. Their small, African-American, mixed-income neighborhood was sandwiched between two giant Shell Oil plants in Louisiana's notorious Chemical Corridor. When the residents of Diamond demanded that Shell relocate them, their chances of success seemed slim: a community with little political clout was taking on the second-largest oil company in the world. And yet, after effective grassroots organizing, unremitting fenceline protests, seemingly endless negotiations with Shell officials, and intense media coverage, the people of Diamond finally got what they wanted: money from Shell to help them relocate out of harm's way. In this book, Steve Lerner tells their story. Around the United States, struggles for environmental justice such as the one in Diamond are the new front lines of both the civil rights and the environmental movements, and Diamond is in many ways a classic environmental-justice story: a minority neighborhood, faced with a polluting industry in its midst, fights back. But Diamond is also the history of a black community that goes back to the days of slavery. In 1811, Diamond (then the Trepagnier Plantation) was the center of the largest slave rebellion in United States history. Descendants of these slaves were among the participants in the modern-day Diamond relocation campaign. Steve Lerner talks to the people of Diamond, and lets them tell their story in their own words. He talks also to the residents of a nearby white neighborhood—many of whom work for Shell and have fewer complaints about the plants—and to environmental activists and Shell officials. His account of Diamond's 30-year ordeal puts a human face on the struggle for environmental justice in the United States.
