It is a montage of constructive engagements with various thinkers and ideas in the promotion of theological plurality for the third millennium. With essays on Hegelian dialectics, Buddhist-Christian dialogue, pneumatic missiology, etc., voice is generated for the renewal of relationality and the revival of imagination. Free from the imposition of traditional boundaries, Yong makes his way across differing landscapes of truth in a global environment, gleaning from the activities of reflection and understanding therein. Providing snapshots of Yong’s theological development over decades of work, The Dialogical Spirit II further evidences the vitality of pentecostal theology to emerging conversations in constructive and comparative venues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary proposals for Christian theology from post-liberalism to Radical Orthodoxy and beyond have espoused their own methodological paradigms. Those who have ventured into this domain of theological method, however, have usually had to stake their claims vis-a-vis trends in what may be called the contemporary post-al age, whether of the post-modern, post-Christendom, post-Enlightenment, post-Western, or post-colonial varieties. This volume is unique among offerings in this arena in suggesting a way forward that engages on each of these fronts, and does so from a particularistic Christian perspective without giving up on Christian theology's traditional claims to universality. This is accomplished through the articulation of a distinctive dialogical methodology informed by both Pentecostalism and Evangelicalism, one rooted in the Christian salvation-history narrative of Incarnation and Pentecost that is yet open to the world in its many and various cultural, ethnic, religious, and disciplinary discourses. Amos Yong here engages with twelve different interlocutors representing different ecumenical, religious, and disciplinary perspectives. 'The Dialogical Spirit' thus not only proffers a model for Christian theological method suitable for the twenty-first century global context but also exemplifies this methodological approach through its interactions across the contemporary scholarly, inter-religious, and theological landscape.

Book The Missiological Spirit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amos Yong
  • Publisher : James Clarke & Company
  • Release : 2015-04-30
  • ISBN : 0227904745

Download or read book The Missiological Spirit written by Amos Yong and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of the theology of mission has developed variously across Christian traditions in the last century. Pentecostal scholars and missiologists also have made their share of contributions to this area. This book brings the insights of pentecostal theologian Amos Yong to the discussion. It delineates the major features of what will be argued as central to a viable vision and praxis for Christian mission in a postmodern, post-Christendom, post-Enlightenment, post-Western, and postcolonial world. What emerges will be a distinctively pentecostally- and evangelically-informed missiological theology, one rooted in the Christian salvation-history narrative of Incarnation and Pentecost that is yet open to the world in its many and various cultural, ethnic, religious, and disciplinary discourses and realities. The argument unfolds through dialogical engagements with the work of others, concrete case studies, and systematic theological reflection. Yong's pneumatological and missiological imagination proffers a model for Christian theology of mission suitable for the twenty-first-century global and pluralistic context even as it exemplifies how a missiological understanding of theology itself unfolds amidst engagements with contemporary ecclesial practices andacademic/theological impulses.

Book Reading Scripture in the Fellowship of the Spirit

Download or read book Reading Scripture in the Fellowship of the Spirit written by Trevor Reynolds and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does the Holy Spirit guide the Christian community in its custodianship and interpretation of Scripture? How does the fact that the Spirit is characterized by koinonia impact upon this task? In light of this, do we read Scripture with too much of an individualistic mindset? In this new book, Dr Trevor Reynolds addresses these questions, seeking answers primarily from within Scripture itself. He explores in depth what Jesus and the New Testament community taught concerning the interpretive role of the Holy Spirit. How did they interpret Scripture, with the help of the Spirit? He highlights their corporate/Spirit-led hermeneutic, with its challenge to our individualistic approaches. The New Testament writers interpreted the Old Testament in a way that revealed communal methods of interpretation. These were informed by Jewish pneumatic and corporate solidarity notions, as reshaped by Jesus’ own Spirit-given example and legacy. In this book, New Testament extracts are discussed which contain either specific examples of how Old Testament Scripture is interpreted by members of the New Testament community, with the Spirit’s help, or speak of the Spirit’s work of interpretation in a more general way. Trevor Reynolds seeks to uncover their implications for biblical hermeneutics, as well as for the doctrine, use and custodianship of Scripture in the life and witness of the church today. The book concludes by pointing to the wide-ranging implications that reading Scripture in the fellowship of the Spirit poses for today’s church.

Book Literature And Spirit

Download or read book Literature And Spirit written by David Patterson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If Bakhtin is right," Wayne C. Booth has said, "a very great deal of what we western critics have spent our time on is mistaken, or trivial, or both." In Literature and Spirit David Patterson proceeds from the premise that Bakhtin is right. Exploring Bakhtin's notions of spirit, responsibility, and dialogue, Patterson takes his reader from the narrow arena of literary criticism to the larger realm of human living and human loving. True to the spirit of Bakhtin, he draws the Russian into a vibrant dialogue with other thinkers, including Foucault, Berdyaev, Gide, Lacan, Levinas, and Heidegger. But he does not stop there. He engages Bakhtin in his own insightful and unique dialogue, meeting the responsibility and taking the risk summoned by dialogue. Literature and Spirit, therefore, is not a typically cool and detached exercise in academic curiosity. Instead, it is a passionate and penetrating endeavor to respond to literature and spirit as the links in life's attachment to life. The author demonstrates that in deciding something about literature, we decide something about the substance and meaning of our lives. Far from being a question of commentary or explication, he argues, our relation to literature is a matter of spiritual life and death. The reader who comes before a literary text encounters the human voice. And Patterson enables his reader to hear that voice in all its spiritual dimensions. Unique in its questions and in its quest, Literature and Spirit addresses an audience that goes beyond the ordinary academic categories. It appeals not only to students of literature, philosophy, and religion, but to anyone who seeks an understanding of spiritual presence and meaning in life. Through his affirmation of what is dear, Patterson responds to the needful question. And in his response he puts the question to his audience: Where are you? Literature and Spirit thus speaks to those who face the task of answering, "Here I am."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirit Wind, a collaborative investigation into the works and person of the Holy Spirit, clearly and richly demonstrates diversity in theological perspectives but unity in the Christian faith. All theological discussions should aim at humbly respecting theological distinctiveness while sincerely encouraging theological conversations. Spirit Wind offers itself to achieve just that. Spirit Wind consists of nine chapters written by nine Chinese theologians, born in the Orient and trained in the West, who are now serving passionately as seminary professors in Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, or the United States. Each author endeavors to explain the person and works of the Holy Spirit not only from Chinese standpoints but also from biblical, historical, and cultural/pastoral perspectives, and yet all chapters are theological in nature. No theologian claims to capture all matters about the Spirit, but every author of this book is captivated by the powerful presence, sovereign freedom, and beautiful operations of the Holy Spirit. You will be, too!

Book The Spirit Shaped Church

Download or read book The Spirit Shaped Church written by Swarup Bar and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Spirit Shaped Church, Swarup Bar argues that the church is defined by its relationship with others. A relational church depends on the porousness of its borders, which means that, while a church has its distinctiveness, it ought to be open to negotiate relational engagements with the world around it. This sort of relationally distinct, permeable church is found to be possible through the leading of the Spirit and the work of Christ. Such engagement is found to be relevant in a plural, religio-cultural context and in situations of marginalization in India. The Spirit Shaped Church reflects an ongoing commitment on the part of Fortress Press to engage the needs of Christian communities around the world. The book is aimed at teachers, clergy, students, and anyone with an interest in the lived experience of Christians in India.

Book The Hermeneutical Spirit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Amos Yong
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2017-11-06
  • ISBN : 1532604890
  • Pages : 341 pages

Download or read book The Hermeneutical Spirit written by Amos Yong and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the contemporary biblical studies climate, proposals regarding the theological interpretation of Scripture are contested, particularly but not only because they privilege, encourage, and foster ecclesial or other forms of normative commitments as part and parcel of the hermeneutical horizon through which scriptural texts are read and understood. Within this context, confessional approaches have been emerging, including some from within the nascent pentecostal theological tradition. This volume builds on the author's previous work in theological method to suggest a pentecostal perspective on theological interpretation that is rooted in the conviction that all Christian reading of sacred Scripture is post-Pentecost, meaning after the Day of Pentecost outpouring of the Spirit on all flesh in anticipation of the coming reign of God. In that respect, such a pentecostal interpretative perspective is not parochially for those within the modern day movement bearing that name but is arguably apostolic in following after the scriptural imagination of the earliest disciples of Jesus the messiah and therefore has ecumenical and missional purchase across space and time. The Hermeneutical Spirit thus provides close readings of various texts across the scriptural canon as a model for Christian theological interpretation of Scripture suitable for the twenty-first-century global context.

Book Adventures in the Spirit

Download or read book Adventures in the Spirit written by Philip Clayton and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Adventures in the Spirit, respected and influential theologian Philip Clayton argues that two major intellectual movements of our day-panentheism and emergence-are converging and that together they offer exciting new vistas for theological reflection. On the one hand, over the last decades many theologians have been re-conceiving the God-world relation panentheistically, affirming a radical indwelling of God within the world and the world within God. On the other hand, scientists have begun to abandon the reductionist ideology that characterized much of the modern period, with a new emphasis on emergence. Their study of how new, novel structures and entities arise throughout the evolutionary process yields a much more open-ended, holistic vision of reality, Clayton argues.

Book Spirit Word Community

Download or read book Spirit Word Community written by Amos Yong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. How does one go about "doing Christian theology"? Yong explores this question by proposing a pneumatological-trinitarian hermeneutic. Its thesis is that interpretation and theological method is an ongoing tri-logue of Spirit-Word-Community: of interpretive subjects as imaginative, obligated and relational agents; of the horizons of the interpreter, the biblical and ecclesial traditions, and the world; and of founding, historical, and ongoing communities of faith and inquiry. Ecumenical perspectives on the topics of pneumatology (the doctrine of the Spirit), metaphysics (foundational pneumatology), epistemology (the pneumatological imagination), and trinitarian theology converge in this book to move forward the present discussion of theological method.
