Download or read book The Routledge Introduction to the American Ghost Story written by Scott Brewster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the historical development of the American ghost story from its Indigenous, Puritan, and Enlightenment origins to its heyday in the nineteenth century and continued vibrancy in modern literary and visual culture. It explores the main tropes, thematic preoccupations, principal settings, and stylistic innovations of literary ghost stories in the United States, and the ghost story’s rich afterlife in cinema, television, and digital culture. Throughout, the role played by ghost stories in nation-building, and the questions these tales raise about race, class, sexuality, religion, and science, will be examined. The book examines major practitioners in the field, such as Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, Shirley Jackson, Henry James, Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Joyce Carol Oates, and Edith Wharton, alongside prominent ghost narratives in cinematic, televisual, and online form, including podcasts, gaming, and ghost-hunting apps. This study also gives a new prominence to neglected or less familiar authors, including BIPOC writers, who have helped to shape the American ghost story tradition.
Download or read book Ghost Of A Chance written by Flo Fitzpatrick and published by Kensington Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enter Laughing Six straight men in the cast plus free Tex-Mex food? My friend Lida sure knew how to persuade me. I signed on the dotted line and dusted off my dance shoes. I knew Bad Business on the Brazos would have them rolling in the aisles and standing up to cheer, whichever came first. But I didn't expect the ghost problem. As in the ghost of Don Mueller, the actor who was killed during the last performance of this show fifty years ago. He's flirting with me in a spectral kind of way. . .and a ghost can make interesting things happen to a girl. Like the gorgeous man on stage with me: Rafe Montez, my secret crush--also known as He Whose Perfect Profile Should Be On A Coin. I'm talking six feet of chiseled yumminess here. Lida thinks Rafe is only acting, but that kiss we share in Act II sure feels real to me. As in earth-shaking, can't-breathe real. . . Flo Fitzpatrick is a performer, teacher, and choreographer, with a BFA in dance and a masters degree in Drama. She first attempted to write a novel at the age of eight, but she was persuaded not to submit the piece by her brothers, who were skeptical that her characters could travel across the Atlantic from New York to London--by train. A transplanted Texan, Flow currently lives in New Jersey with her husband Ed and their two Border Collie wannabes, Lucy and Hawk.
Download or read book Espectros written by Alberto Ribas-Casasayas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-12-24 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Espectros is a compilation of original scholarly studies that presents the first volume-length exploration of the spectral in literature, film, and photography of Latin America, Spain, and the Latino diaspora. In recent decades, scholarship in deconstructionist "hauntology," trauma studies, affect in image theory, and a renewed interest in the Gothic genre, has given rise to a Spectral Studies approach to the study of narrative. Haunting, the spectral, and the effects of the unseen, carry a special weight in contemporary Latin American and Spanish cultures (referred to in the book as “Transhispanic cultures”), due to the ominous legacy of authoritarian governments and civil wars, as well as the imposition of the unseen yet tangible effects of global economics and neoliberal policies. Ribas and Petersen’s detailed introductory analysis grounds haunting as a theoretical tool for literary and cultural criticism in the Transhispanic world, with an emphasis on the contemporary period from the end of the Cold War to the present. The chapters in this volume explore haunting from a diversity of perspectives, in particular engaging haunting as a manifestation of trauma, absence, and mourning. The editors carefully distinguish the collective, cultural dimension of historical trauma from the individual, psychological experience of the aftermath of a violent history, always taking into account unresolved social justice issues. The volume also addresses the association of the spectral photographic image with the concept of haunting because of the photograph’s ability to reveal a presence that is traditionally absent or has been excluded from hegemonic representations of society. The volume concludes with a series of studies that address the unseen effects and progressive deterioration of the social fabric as a result of a globalized economy and neoliberal policies, from the modernization of the nation-state to present.
