Book excerpt: Dhivehi, the language of the Maldives, has received little attention in the linguistic literature, and no other comprehensive grammar of the standard language has yet been published. This work describes the phonology, unique orthography, morphology, and syntax of standard Dhivehi. Plentiful examples with native orthography, Roman transliteration, and morpheme-by-morpheme glossing illustrate the various features of the language. This grammar will be of use both to linguists and to students of Dhivehi.

Book The Dhivehi Language

Download or read book The Dhivehi Language written by Sonja Fritz and published by Ergon Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This chapter also briefly looks at the ancient political system of the country with a view to understand the background in which the legal system operated and developed over the course of history. As this has not been the subject of any previous study, this chapter will not only benefit law students and legal researchers, but also be of use to those who are interested in studying the ancient kingdom of the Maldive Islands. Chapter 2 follows the development of the Maldivian legal system during the 20th century. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the factors that triggered the legal system’s transformation from an ancient simplicity to a modern complexity. Chapter 3 explains the sources of Maldivian law from which laws are derived an applied by the courts. Chapter 4 examines the court system. In this chapter, various courts and their powers are examined in detail. Chapter 5, 6 and 7 focuses on the actual people who drive the legal system - the judges, prosecutors and the legal profession. As such, these chapters analyze the constitutional role of the judges, judicial service, legal and prosecutorial service of the state and the legal profession. Chapter 8 traces the development and present status of legal education in the Maldives. Chapter 9 and 10 provides an outline of the criminal and civil procedure followed by the courts to administer justice.

Book Egophoricity

Download or read book Egophoricity written by Simeon Floyd and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-04-15 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egophoricity refers to the grammaticalised encoding of personal knowledge or involvement of a conscious self in a represented event or situation. Most typically, a marker that is egophoric is found with first person subjects in declarative sentences and with second person subjects in interrogative sentences. This person sensitivity reflects the fact that speakers generally know most about their own affairs, while in questions this epistemic authority typically shifts to the addressee. First described for Tibeto-Burman languages, egophoric-like patterns have now been documented in a number of other regions around the world, including languages of Western China, the Andean region of South America, the Caucasus, Papua New Guinea, and elsewhere. This book is a first attempt to place detailed descriptions of this understudied grammatical category side by side and to add to the cross-linguistic picture of how ideas of self and other are encoded and projected in language. The diverse but conceptually related egophoric phenomena described in its chapters provide fascinating case studies for how structural patterns in morphosyntax are forged under intersubjective, interactional pressures as we link elements of our speech to our speech situation.

Book The Indo Aryan Languages

Download or read book The Indo Aryan Languages written by Danesh Jain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 1039 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indo-Aryan languages are spoken by at least 700 million people throughout India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldive Islands. They have a claim to great antiquity, with the earliest Vedic Sanskrit texts dating to the end of the second millennium B.C. With texts in Old Indo-Aryan, Middle Indo-Aryan and Modern Indo-Aryan, this language family supplies a historical documentation of language change over a longer period than any other subgroup of Indo-European. This volume is divided into two main sections dealing with general matters and individual languages. Each chapter on the individual language covers the phonology and grammar (morphology and syntax) of the language and its writing system, and gives the historical background and information concerning the geography of the language and the number of its speakers.
