Book The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Treasure Platform Sutra

Download or read book The Sixth Patriarch s Dharma Treasure Platform Sutra written by Linbergh Chu and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has not been, probably will not be, an instance that a Buddhist patriarchship is entrusted to a person who is completely illiterate. This situation happened to Hunng who assumed Chinese Buddhist Sixth Patriarch in 661 AD. During his thirty-seven-year preaching life, his teaching and the dialogues with other cultivators were recorded and compiled into this sutra named The Sixth Patriarch's Dharma Treasure Platform Sutra. The succinct sutra explicitly explores the true essence of human mind. It interprets the highest level of the dharma and breaks the bias and misconceptions that people might often have. While formality was the dominating practice adopted by most of the cultivators at the time, Hunng alone advocated formless practice in which the cultivators focus on their mind rather than the forms like motionless sitting or mere chanting of the sutras. His teaching is pragmatic and straightforward. This sutra is doubtless an indispensable textbook for all levels of the spiritual seekers.

Book The Altar Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch

Download or read book The Altar Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch written by Daniel Scharpenburg and published by . This book was released on 2015-05-11 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hui-neng (638-713) is one of the most respected and revered figures in Buddhist history. He was an illiterate woodcutter who suddenly attained Enlightenment upon hearing the Diamond Sutra. He became the Sixth Patriarch in the Ch'an tradition. He is regarded as the creator of the Sudden Enlightenment philosophy. He embodies the fact that anyone can attain Enlightenment, regardless of education, class, or lineage. This collection of talks is called the Platform or Altar Sutra. It is the only Chinese Buddhist text that has been given the title Sutra. This new translation differs from most. I have placed Huineng's autobiography at the end and his wonderful teachings at the beginning. Usually the opposite is what is done. It's not that the Master's story isn't important to me. Of course it is. But, I think, far too often we caught up in hero worship and we pay attention to the story instead of the teachings. The story matters, but the teachings are what we need to remember.I have also gone through the text and taken out some things that were repetitive and I have used modern language whenever possible. The point of this was to make the text more accessible to modern readers. This text can be read and studied both by lifelong students of the Dharma and by beginners. This is not intended for academics, as in some cases I took poetic license with the original text. It is intended for students of the Dharma.Numerous versions of this text are available and I hope mine is in some measure unique and helps with spiritual progress. I have created version that is very short and easy to read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two classic Zen Buddhist texts that present the foundational teachings of the tradition—now collected in one volume for the modern practitioner The Diamond Sutra, composed in India in the fourth century CE, is one of the most treasured works of Buddhist literature and is the oldest existing printed book in the world. It is known as the Diamond Sutra because its teachings are said to be like diamonds that cut away all dualistic thought, releasing one from the attachment to objects and bringing one to the further shore of enlightenment. The format of this important sutra is presented as a conversation between the Buddha and one of his disciples. The Sutra of Hui-neng, also known as the Platform Sutra, contains the autobiography of a pivotal figure in Zen history and some of the most profound passages of Zen literature. Hui-neng (638–713) was the sixth patriarch of Zen in China but is often regarded as the true father of the Zen tradition. He was a poor, illiterate woodcutter who is said to have attained enlightenment upon hearing a recitation of the Diamond Sutra. Together, these two scriptures present the central teaching of the Zen Buddhist tradition and are essential reading for all students of Buddhism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symbol of the heart is at the core of traditional Chinese psychology and culture, according to author Heyong Shen. In this latest volume arising from the popular Fay Lecture Series, sponsored by the Jung Center, Houston, the noted Chinese analyst, scholar, and educator discusses Jungian analysis in China and explores what the historical Chinese emphasis on the heart can add to Western understandings of modern depth psychology. C. G. Jung had a profound personal interest in Chinese culture and wrote extensively on Chinese philosophy and symbolism. In his foreword to Richard Wilhelm’s translation of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese oracle and book of wisdom, Jung referred to Chinese logograms as readable archetypes. Continuing this theme, Shen states in his prologue, “Most of the basic psychological terms in Chinese characters are formed originally with the image of the heart and contain deep meaning for the understanding of depth psychology and Jungian analysis . . . The Chinese characters for ‘thinking,’ ‘emotion,’ ‘will,’ and ‘intention’ are all combined with the image of the heart, as are the characters for ‘love,’ ‘hate,’ ‘compassion,’ ‘virtue,’ ‘listening,’ ‘healing,’ and for ‘wise,’ ‘wisdom,’ and ‘enlightenment.’” The heart serves as the foundation. Drawing from centuries-deep wells of Chinese, Buddhist, and Confucian thought as well as an intimate understanding of the development of Jung’s theories, Shen offers a valuable reminder of the many commonalities among humans from all nations as they seek greater levels of self-awareness.

Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the three generations of Buddha-in-mind (Xin Zhongxin), a Tantrism School of Buddhism. The Sixth Patriarch's Platform Sutra is the only sutra by a master of Chinese background, the Chan School's sixth patriarch, Hui Neng. Among many explanations to this sutra for over a thousand years in Chinese history, the notes by the second patriarch of Buddha-in-mind are one of the best to explain the profound in simple terms and serve as absolute guidelines for Chan practitioners. To supplement, the author's commentary further explains the texts for practitioners to get an overall idea of the Chan School and historical events related to the platform sutra. It tells more in simple terms about the philosophies hidden in some ambiguous texts.
