Download or read book Introduction to the Devout Life written by St Francis Of Sales and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Introduction to the Devout Life, 17th-century French clergyman Francis de Sales addresses himself to the mass of Christians who do not believe it possible that they could live a devout life while also struggling to make their way in the world. He contends that devotion is not a state necessarily relegated to monks in cloisters, but can be a quality of life to which everyone can aspire. Accordingly, the book is arranged as a self-help guide to lead the reader through the process of developing a life lived in accordance with God. Christians seeking a deeper connection with the divine will find this an inspiring read. French bishop and Roman Catholic saint FRANCIS DE SALES (1567-1622) is known for his work converting Protestants to Catholicism. He was a renowned preacher and writer; among his works is Treatise on the Love of God.

Book Meditations on the Life and Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Download or read book Meditations on the Life and Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ written by John Tauler and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2013-04-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ALL holy men agree in teaching that devout meditation on the sacred Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the most efficacious ways of kindling the fire of divine love in our hearts. "Very often," writes the holy abbot Blosius, "hath our Lord revealed to his beloved spouses Gertrude, Bridget, Mechtilde and Catherine, how pleasing it is to him and how fruitful to the soul, when the Passion of Jesus Christ is recalled to mind with loving and humble attention and sincere devotion. These holy women meditated on the Passion with unflagging diligence. The sacred Passion, though so sharp and bitter in itself, is full to the brim of the sweetest essence of charity. These holy women, therefore, so fixed the thought of it in the very centre of their souls, and contemplated it with such burning love and with such sweet affections of charity, that it became to them like honey in the mouth, melody in the ear and joy in the heart." Therefore all who desire to love our Lord Jesus Christ with sincerity should diligently meditate on the sacred Passion according to the grace bestowed on each one by God. In this we can always find delight. By this practice, within the reach of everyone, we can always increase our love and go on apace to God. In this exercise shall we find rest in the midst of labour, comfort in the darkest anxiety, support in the most dangerous temptations and joy amidst humiliation and contempt. In his clear and succinct way, St Thomas Aquinas gives us four reasons for meditating on the Passion: I. By it we learn how much God loves man. 2. From it we learn humility, obedience, self sacrifice and all virtues. 3. By means of this exercise the soul is moved to hate sin. 4. We become convinced that no kind of death should be feared by a man living a good life, since the Son of God embraced the Cross.

Download or read book Life as a Vapor written by John Piper and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 31 meditations from the founder of Desiring God that will connect you to a fresh understanding of God and renew your faith. "You do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). Living knowing that your life is a vapor is different than just living. Things here are passing away. You’ve got to hold on to what will stand. Savor what matters. This collection of thirty-one articles is full of that heart-longing after Christ that distinguishes Piper’s preaching ministry. You will feel as though you have stumbled into a garden as you enter these pages. The Scripture cuts, Christ is exalted in God, and we worship Him. Life Is Short. Eternity Is Long. Live Like It. You will exist forever. You and God are both in the universe to stay—either as friends on His terms, or enemies on yours—which it will be is proven in this life. And this life is a vapor. Two seconds, and we will be gone. In these thirty-one meditations, John Piper will connect you to a fresh understanding of God and a renewed relationship with Him. You’ll find your faith stirred to make every day count for Christ when you consider life as a vapor. Story Behind the Book Time is precious. We are fragile. Life is short. Eternity is long. Every minute counts. Oh, to be a faithful steward of the breath God has given me. Three texts resound in my ears: “Redeem the time” (Ephesians 5:16 ); “It is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy” (1 Corinthians 4:2); “His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10 ). Surely God means for our minutes on earth to count for something significant. Paul said, “In the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain” (Philippians 2:16). In the same way, I have good hope from the Lord that my “labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Corinthians 15:58 ).

  • Pages : 48 pages

Download or read book Meditation written by Charles H. Spurgeon and published by Felipe chavarro. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To encourage God’s people, we present this issue of the Free Grace Broadcaster on Meditation. Meditation is essential for a healthy walk with Christ and growth in grace. Charles Spurgeon introduces this subject with a helpful overview of the importance, practice, and benefits of biblical meditation. Thomas Watson defines what it is. Thomas Manton is convinced meditation is a biblical duty, and he tells us why. What is the nature of meditation? Isaac Ambrose answers that and describes the time, place, and matter of that holy practice. William Bates beautifully instructs us in occasional meditation, focusing on God’s creation, and George Swinnock offers five descriptions of solemn and set meditation on sacred subjects. Are there real dangers in neglecting this holy act of deep thinking? Edmund Calamy lists twelve! And they are sobering. John Owen, a deeply spiritually-minded pastor and theologian, presents us with practical helps for meditating upon God, and then A. W. Pink meticulously shows us how to approach a biblical text so that we can chew the Bread of Life. Are you new to meditation and wonder what to meditate about? In a second article, Thomas Watson gives a beautiful panorama of biblical themes to fix our hearts on, starting with God in eternity, progressing to Christ in history, and extending to heaven and hell. Then, Jonathan Edwards urges us to show our love to Christ; he does so by giving us a wonderful description of His loveliness. Spurgeon, a great advocate and practitioner of meditation, closes this issue by instructing us with sweet meditations of Jesus Christ our Lord. And how precious they are! Be forewarned: meditation is hard in our too-busy, distracted world; but this FGB is a brief “how-to” that we pray will fan the flames of your heart to seek the glory of Christ in Scripture and to love Him as never before.
