Download or read book The Devotional Literature of Scotland Classic Reprint written by Adam Philip and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Devotional Literature of Scotland When invited a year ago to give one of the Murtle Lectures at Aberdeen University, I chose for a theme The Devotional Literature of Scotland. The subject has, for long, been a fascinating one. It has a literary interest. It appeals to our patriot ism. It touches our deepest life. In Scotland, We are heirs of a splendid heritage, nobly born, as R. L. Stevenson puts it, and there is a grandeur in the Past that is appealing. The contribution of Scotland to the religious life of the world is second to none, and its devotional messages have their own distinction. I should like the young and the heads of homes to see it, and the men of Scottish blood everywhere to feel it, and together to honour the heritage that has come to us, and to pass it on undiminished, if not enriched. This volume makes no pretence to cover, adequately, the Whole field. But it is an endeavour to show some of the paths Where lie the goodly treasures. And, incidentally, the story discloses many a link With the life of England and America, and With honoured names in their annals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rests by the River: Devotional Meditations The pages of Saint Andrew, an organ of the Church of Scotland. They are intended for devotional moments; but by devotional moments I do not mean moments of vacuity. It is not in its season of intellectual barrenness that the soul yields its spiritual fruit. Religious sentiment, if it is worth anything, must be preceded by religious perception. According, I have divided each of these pieces into two parts -the first containing a thought and the second either an invocation or a prayer; the Whole piece may be read in three minutes. This is the age of brevity, and I have tried to put intensity in the place of extension. The appeals are to various moods of mind if some of them should. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Addresses and Devotional Poems So much Mr. Griggs would have asserted and with such intentions would he have put his work forth, -at once modestly and courageously. Others may, perhaps, say more. For there is assuredly a value in the effort of a mind trained to the sifting of evidence to estimate the values of human Opinions on any question which is near to the plain man's intelligence, and this every religion which has meaning must ever be. Mr. Griggs was a lawyer eminent in his profession, widely recognized for his logical and forceful analysis of legal evidence. And all the gifts that he derived from the study and practice of the law he utilized in his presentation of this, his great brief for religious faith. Download or read book The Press and the People written by Adam Fox and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Press and the People is the first full-length study of cheap print in early modern Scotland. It traces the production and distribution of ephemeral publications from the nation's first presses in the early sixteenth century through to the age of Burns in the late eighteenth. It explores the development of the Scottish book trade in general and the production of slight and popular texts in particular. Focusing on the means by which these works reached a wide audience, it illuminates the nature of their circulation in both urban and rural contexts. Specific chapters examine single-sheet imprints such as ballads and gallows speeches, newssheets and advertisements, as well as the little pamphlets that contained almanacs and devotional works, stories and songs. The study demonstrates just how much more of this literature was once printed than now survives and argues that Scotland had a much larger market for such material than has been appreciated hitherto. By illustrating the ways in which Scottish printers combined well-known titles from England with a distinctive repertoire of their own, The Press and the People transforms our understanding of popular culture in early modern Scotland and Britain more widely.
