Book Wildlife Production Systems

Download or read book Wildlife Production Systems written by Robert J. Hudson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, examines the controversial position of commercial utilisation in relation to wildlife conservation. Production of large mammals has earned respectability as an agricultural strategy and its evaluation has been listed as a priority requirement in the World Conservation Strategy. However, many authorities question whether wildlife production is a viable economic and environmental strategy, and suggest that it runs counter to its claimed purpose. This book evaluates this controversy by chronicling the changing role of wildlife and by reflecting on the implications of these trends. The book should be of interest to people both applauding and deploring the use of wildlife in this economic role.

Book Sovereignty s Entailments

Download or read book Sovereignty s Entailments written by Paul Nadasdy and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-11-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, indigenous peoples in the Yukon have signed land claim and self-government agreements that spell out the nature of government-to-government relations and grant individual First Nations significant, albeit limited, powers of governance over their peoples, lands, and resources. Those agreements, however, are predicated on the assumption that if First Nations are to qualify as governments at all, they must be fundamentally state-like, and they frame First Nation powers in the culturally contingent idiom of sovereignty. Based on over five years of ethnographic research carried out in the southwest Yukon, Sovereignty’s Entailments is a close ethnographic analysis of everyday practices of state formation in a society whose members do not take for granted the cultural entailments of sovereignty. This approach enables Nadasdy to illustrate the full scope and magnitude of the "cultural revolution" that is state formation and expose the culturally specific assumptions about space, time, and sociality that lie at the heart of sovereign politics. Nadasdy’s timely and insightful work illuminates how the process of state formation is transforming Yukon Indian people’s relationships with one another, animals, and the land.

Book Greenlanders Whales and Whaling

Download or read book Greenlanders Whales and Whaling written by Richard A. Caulfield and published by Dartmouth College Press. This book was released on 2000-09-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whaling has been central to the life of Greenland's Inuit peoples for at least 4000 years, but political, economic, technological, and regulatory changes have altered this ancient practice. Richard A. Caulfield reveals these impacts first by analyzing Home Rule and its success in Greenland, and then by looking at whaling's place in the contemporary Greenlandic economy and its evolving co-management regime. What emerges from his investigation is an intricate web connecting traditions of indigenous peoples, the promises and pitfalls of co-management, the influence of international whaling policies, the complexities of sustainability, and the power of culturally determined views shaping relationships between humans and their environment. Caulfield finds that controversy over whaling often arises from conflicting idea systems, rather than disagreement over biological resource management. Understanding the ways Greenlanders and outside interests have defined and negotiated these conflicts "gives us more than just an insight into how indigenous peoples are coping with a changing world," he writes. "It also provides us with a sense of the challenges we face as well."

Book Wildlife Conservation Policy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Valerius Geist
  • Publisher : Calgary : Detselig Enterprises Limited
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Wildlife Conservation Policy written by Valerius Geist and published by Calgary : Detselig Enterprises Limited. This book was released on 1995 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book on wildlife conservation policy. It aims to bring some understanding to the obscure but vitally important, area of conservation policy; it discusses what we in the conservation community need to uphold and defend if wildlife is to thrive, if biodiversity is to be maintained, if natural renewable resources, of which wildlife is a part, are to be used in a sustainable fashion. In this, the North American system of wildlife conservation and management holds important lessons. This book focuses on an ongoing, but ancient, struggle between public and private ownership of wildlife. Historically, wildlife has been a pawn in the eternal battle between the rich and powerful and the not-so-wealthy of modest political power. Today's tensions arise not only from private interests gaining on public ones in the area of wildlife conservation and the negative consequences that entails, but also from the inadequate application of available knowledge to decisions on this matter.
