Bored on a rainy day, three good friends, Lionel, Clem, and Daisy decide to hang out in Daisy's attic. She assures them that there are some old board games up there they might be interested in playing. At the bottom of a stack they find one that seems oddly different than the rest, with a title they have never seen. The name of the game emblazoned across the top of the red box in silver is... THE DEVIL'S HOPSCOTCH. It consists of a board that folds out in a dramatic way to create a hopscotch game that stretches out about 9 feet long, and two decks of cards, one labeled CONSEQUENCE and the other REWARD. The legend inside the top of the box says, "Once you begin, the game never ends" They all laugh at this. The rules are simple. If a player jumps through the squares and back again to the start without stepping on a line they are allowed to pick a REWARD card. If they mess up they must either perform the task indicated on the board or select a CONSEQUENCE card. The game starts out fun, but the Devil is in the details, and one of them will not survive.

Book The Devil s Playground

  • Author : James Traub
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307432130
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book The Devil s Playground written by James Traub and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Times Square turns 100, New York Times Magazine contributing writer James Traub tells the story of how this mercurial district became one of the most famous and exciting places in the world. The Devil’s Playground is classic and colorful American history, from the first years of the twentieth century through the Runyonesque heyday of nightclubs and theaters in the 1920s and ’30s, to the district’s decline in the 1960s and its glittering corporate revival in the 1990s. First, Traub gives us the great impresarios, wits, tunesmiths, newspaper columnists, and nocturnal creatures who shaped Times Square over the century since the place first got its name: Oscar Hammerstein, Florenz Ziegfeld, George S. Kaufman, Damon Runyon, Walter Winchell, and “the Queen of the Nightclubs,” Texas Guinan; bards like A. J. Liebling, Joe Mitchell, and the Beats, who celebrated the drug dealers and pimps of 42nd Street. He describes Times Square’s notorious collapse into pathology and the fierce debates over how best to restore it to life. Traub then goes on to scrutinize today’s Times Square as no author has yet done. He writes about the new 42nd Street, the giant Toys “R” Us store with its flashing Ferris wheel, the new world of corporate theater, and the sex shops trying to leave their history behind. More than sixty years ago, Liebling called Times Square “the heart of the world”—not just the center of the world, though this crossroads in Midtown Manhattan was indeed that, but its heart. From the dawn of the twentieth century through the 1950s, Times Square was the whirling dynamo of American popular culture and, increasingly, an urban sanctuary for the eccentric and the untamed. The name itself became emblematic of the tremendous life force of cities everywhere. Today, Times Square is once again an awe-inspiring place, but the dark and strange corners have been filled with blazing light. The most famous street character on Broadway, “the Naked Cowboy,” has his own website, and Toys “R” Us calls its flagship store in Times Square “the toy center of the universe.” For the giant entertainment corporations that have moved to this safe, clean, and self-consciously gaudy spot, Times Square is still very much the center of the world. But is it still the heart?

Book Finite Difference Methods in Financial Engineering

Download or read book Finite Difference Methods in Financial Engineering written by Daniel J. Duffy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of quantitative finance (QF) is one of the fastest growing areas of research and its practical applications to derivatives pricing problem. Since the discovery of the famous Black-Scholes equation in the 1970's we have seen a surge in the number of models for a wide range of products such as plain and exotic options, interest rate derivatives, real options and many others. Gone are the days when it was possible to price these derivatives analytically. For most problems we must resort to some kind of approximate method. In this book we employ partial differential equations (PDE) to describe a range of one-factor and multi-factor derivatives products such as plain European and American options, multi-asset options, Asian options, interest rate options and real options. PDE techniques allow us to create a framework for modeling complex and interesting derivatives products. Having defined the PDE problem we then approximate it using the Finite Difference Method (FDM). This method has been used for many application areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, semiconductor simulation and astrophysics, to name just a few. In this book we apply the same techniques to pricing real-life derivative products. We use both traditional (or well-known) methods as well as a number of advanced schemes that are making their way into the QF literature: Crank-Nicolson, exponentially fitted and higher-order schemes for one-factor and multi-factor options Early exercise features and approximation using front-fixing, penalty and variational methods Modelling stochastic volatility models using Splitting methods Critique of ADI and Crank-Nicolson schemes; when they work and when they don't work Modelling jumps using Partial Integro Differential Equations (PIDE) Free and moving boundary value problems in QF Included with the book is a CD containing information on how to set up FDM algorithms, how to map these algorithms to C++ as well as several working programs for one-factor and two-factor models. We also provide source code so that you can customize the applications to suit your own needs.

Book excerpt: After saving the US from a Russian nuclear attack in the bestselling Weapons of Opportunity, Nick Flynn returns in what could be his most dangerous mission yet. Former US Air Force officer Nick Flynn joined the clandestine Quartet Directorate to continue its long-standing mission: to act decisively against serious threats to the free world. And with the backing of Russia’s authoritarian president, no threat is more deadly than that of Pavel Voronin and his mercenary Raven Syndicate. Twice they have almost succeeded in bringing the United States to its knees, only to be stopped at the last moment by Flynn and his team of highly trained operatives. But Flynn knows it’s only a matter of time before one of Voronin’s plans to cripple the US bears lethal fruit. And so, taking the Russian oligarch permanently off the board is now his number one priority. Operating undetected deep in hostile territory and fighting their way through Voronin’s extraordinarily tough defenses will require every ounce of skill, dedication, and daring that Flynn and his small force can muster. The slightest error could be fatal for all of them—and, ultimately, for millions of Americans. With the clock ticking, and dangers mounting on all sides, it’s up to Flynn and the others to finish Voronin before it’s too late. In this all-or-nothing battle, victory is the only acceptable outcome—no matter how high the cost!

This is the crisis that Derek Stillwater faces as troubleshooter for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. A specialist in biological and chemical weapons, he's in a breathtaking race to find the terrorist thieves and destroy Chimera M13. There's little evidence, except for the recording of a familiar voice that reminds him of an army buddy who's dead. Questioning his sanity and failing to keep his panic attacks at bay, Stillwater has no choice but to follow his instincts while scientists work on a vaccine in Washington, D.C. He just might have a chance in hell of ending the madness -- if only the government's most experienced immunological researcher hadn't become infected.

Book Numerical Methods in Computational Finance

Download or read book Numerical Methods in Computational Finance written by Daniel J. Duffy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-03-14 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed and step-by-step introduction to the mathematical foundations of ordinary and partial differential equations, their approximation by the finite difference method and applications to computational finance. The book is structured so that it can be read by beginners, novices and expert users. Part A Mathematical Foundation for One-Factor Problems Chapters 1 to 7 introduce the mathematical and numerical analysis concepts that are needed to understand the finite difference method and its application to computational finance. Part B Mathematical Foundation for Two-Factor Problems Chapters 8 to 13 discuss a number of rigorous mathematical techniques relating to elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations in two space variables. In particular, we develop strategies to preprocess and modify a PDE before we approximate it by the finite difference method, thus avoiding ad-hoc and heuristic tricks. Part C The Foundations of the Finite Difference Method (FDM) Chapters 14 to 17 introduce the mathematical background to the finite difference method for initial boundary value problems for parabolic PDEs. It encapsulates all the background information to construct stable and accurate finite difference schemes. Part D Advanced Finite Difference Schemes for Two-Factor Problems Chapters 18 to 22 introduce a number of modern finite difference methods to approximate the solution of two factor partial differential equations. This is the only book we know of that discusses these methods in any detail. Part E Test Cases in Computational Finance Chapters 23 to 26 are concerned with applications based on previous chapters. We discuss finite difference schemes for a wide range of one-factor and two-factor problems. This book is suitable as an entry-level introduction as well as a detailed treatment of modern methods as used by industry quants and MSc/MFE students in finance. The topics have applications to numerical analysis, science and engineering. More on computational finance and the author’s online courses, see www.datasim.nl.

Book Tales from Dayrut

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mohamed Mustagab
  • Publisher : American University in Cairo Press
  • Release : 2008-10-01
  • ISBN : 1617971731
  • Pages : 211 pages

Download or read book Tales from Dayrut written by Mohamed Mustagab and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of fourteen connected stories and a novella, From the Secret History of Numan Abdel Hafez, takes us deep into Upper Egypt and the village of Dayrut al-Sharif, in which Mohamed Mustagab was born. To depict a world renowned for its poverty, ignorance, vendettas, and implacable code of honor, Mustagab deploys the black humor and Swiftian sarcasm of the insider who knows his society only too well. When the stillness of a day's end is shattered by a single gunshot, poignant beauty merges seamlessly into horror, and when a police officer seeking to unravel a murder finds himself with more body parts than he knows what to do with, violence tips as easily into farce. In counterpoint, the author's often surrealist imagination explores the mysteries of a landscape where seductive women haunt dusty paths and a man may find himself crushed like a worm beneath another's foot. Elsewhere, the horizons of 'my village' expand to include other countries (the author worked in the Arabian Peninsula for a number of years), where equally disastrous consequences follow on folly and self-delusion. Previously almost unknown in English, Mustagab's voice is both original and disturbing.

Book The Psychopath Will See You Now

Download or read book The Psychopath Will See You Now written by Graham Barrett and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History is full of surprises. This book is about some of the big ones of the recent past, be they political upheavals, wars and atrocity of famine and diseases of mass destruction. But we also note the humor, or sense of the ridiculous, that is a key ingredient of the human experience. Trying to make sense of events as they occur is traditionally the job of the foreign correspondent, the man or woman on the ground. In a fast-moving collection of articles we travel the world with the author as he covers many major events, observing at first hand the end of the apartheid, the fall of the Soviet empire, the violent disintegration of Yugoslavia, conflict in the Middle East, the reunification of Germany, the last quirky remnants of the imperial era, the hunt for the source of the AIDS virus, the origins of the crisis in the European Union, the horrors of the narcotics trade, the lifestyles of tyrants, royalty and those who live at the edge of the world. Through it we experience the extraordinary individuals who shape the history for good or for evil, or who entertain us through their exceptional personalities and ambitions. This is a rollicking journey of the discovery through a world that never ceases to excite, amuse, astonish or dismay.
