Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of hundreds of biting, witty, cruel, and hilarious definitions combines the best 200 definitions from Ambrose Bierce’s classic The Devil’s Dictionary, with more than 500 definitions from the most humorous and stinging entries in Chaz Bufe’s The American Heretic’s Dictionary. This new edition includes 50 new definitions from Bufe and new biting illustrations by San Francisco artist and filmmaker J. R. Swanson. The Bierce definitions focus on his favorite targets, including religion, jingoism masquerading as patriotism, the “lickspittle” press, the thievery inherent in the American economic system, and the multitude of idiocies and hypocrisies pervading American social and political life. Bufe’s definitions share many of the same targets, but also skewer such contemporary plagues as the “right to life” movement, religious fundamentalism, the IRS, and the puritanically “politically correct.” Bufe also turns a jaundiced eye on both male and female sexual attitudes, something which Bierce, writing in much more conservative times, was not free to do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dictionary, n: A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” Bierce’s groundbreaking Devil’s Dictionary had a complex publication history. Started in the mid-1800s as an irregular column in Californian newspapers under various titles, he gradually refined the new-at-the-time idea of an irreverent set of glossary-like definitions. The final name, as we see it titled in this work, did not appear until an 1881 column published in the periodical The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp. There were no publications of the complete glossary in the 1800s. Not until 1906 did a portion of Bierce’s collection get published by Doubleday, under the name The Cynic’s Word Book—the publisher not wanting to use the word “Devil” in the title, to the great disappointment of the author. The 1906 word book only went from A to L, however, and the remainder was never released under the compromised title. In 1911 the Devil’s Dictionary as we know it was published in complete form as part of Bierce’s collected works (volume 7 of 12), including the remainder of the definitions from M to Z. It has been republished a number of times, including more recent efforts where older definitions from his columns that never made it into the original book were included. Due to the complex nature of copyright, some of those found definitions have unclear public domain status and were not included. This edition of the book includes, however, a set of definitions attributed to his one-and-only “Demon’s Dictionary” column, including Bierce’s classic definition of A: “the first letter in every properly constructed alphabet.” Bierce enjoyed “quoting” his pseudonyms in his work. Most of the poetry, dramatic scenes and stories in this book attributed to others were self-authored and do not exist outside of this work. This includes the prolific Father Gassalasca Jape, whom he thanks in the preface—“jape” of course having the definition: “a practical joke.” This book is a product of its time and must be approached as such. Many of the definitions hold up well today, but some might be considered less palatable by modern readers. Regardless, the book’s humorous style is a valuable snapshot of American culture from past centuries. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book The Powers of Binding and Loosing

Download or read book The Powers of Binding and Loosing written by Elder Nathan J. Elliott and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-27 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE POWERS OF BINDING AND LOOSING (BREAKING DOWN STRONGHOLDS) This book is a product of my life, it’s a manual to teach and to instruct the believer on how to live this life by faith, and to walk in God’s perfect will, and that is by applying God’s Word in our lives by faith and watch it produce a harvest. There was a phrase that I heard in a movie and it was this, “with great power, comes great responsibility”, and Jesus Christ has given to His church and to the fellowship of believers such great power and the time has come for us to display the power that has been given to us, to this dying world. We have been told that, life is what YOU make it, it’s how the chips may fall, you win a few, you lose a few, if life throws you lemons make lemonade, life is a crapshoot, it’s all in how you throw the dice! Life is not a crapshoot! God has a purpose and a plan for your life, and contained n His Word are the precepts and the principles on how to overcome the circumstances of this life, and I don’t mean to overcome just a few things, but ALL things, if we’re willing to be obedient to what is being said in His Holy Word! PSALMS 35:19: “MANY ARE THE AFFLICTIONS OF THE RIGHTEOUS: BUT THE LORD DELIVERTH HIM OUT OF THEM ALL.” (KJV) By applying the principles that God has taught me over the years, God has healed me of two major diseases (Gulline Barre Syndrome and Crohn’s Disease) that have no cure by man’s knowledge. Within this book “The Power of Binding and Loosing, (Breaking Down Strongholds)” the reader will learn who they are in God, and why they were created. And because of God’s love and through the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ, He has given us the opportunity to have a NEW LIFE! A life which is empowered by His Spirit and covered by His blood; so that all who accept the sacrifice of the cross can overcome the circumstances of this life. The reader of this book will learn how to apply God’s Word as a seed and to plant that seed in our hearts, and then watch the seed of the Word of God produce a harvest in their life. The reader will also learn how to fight the enemy (satan), by using the Word of God which is our greatest weapon, to be victorious in every area of their life for the Gory of the Lord. God has created us with POTENTIAL, and that potential was not given to us just to be deposited in the grave. What is potential? POTENTIAL IS...DORMANT ABILITY...RESERVED POWER...UNTAPPED STRENGTH...UNUSED SUCCESS...HIDDEN TALENTS...CAPPED CAPABILITY. Potential is all you can be but have not yet become...all you can do but have not yet done...how far you can reach but have not yet reached...what you can accomplish but have not yet accomplished. Potential is unexposed ability and latent power! Everything the God has ever created was created with potential...everything! And everything in life has the potential to fulfill its purpose. People who die without achieving their full potential rob their generation of their latent ability. To die with ability is IRRESPONSIBLE! When God created the heavens and the earth, He first decided what He wanted to make something out of and then He spoke to that source. When God wanted plants He spoke to the dirt. When God wanted fish He spoke to the waters. When God wanted animals He spoke to the ground. But WHEN GOD CREATED MAN, HE SPOKE TO HIMSELF! YOU CAME OUT OF GOD!!! So remember, “WITH GREAT POWER COME GREAT RESPONISIBILTY,” God has given to us the greatest power that there is, and that is the opportunity to be re-born in the likeness of His Son and empowered by His Holy Spirit. So let’s take this new life and create an effective change in the earth, for the Glory of my Father’s Kingdom!!!! Elder Nathan J. Elliott

However, the 20th Century’s first Genocide is used in the book as an example to demonstrate how the powers to be in Washington, D.C., blink at cruel injustices through the application of double standards and ethical lapses for the sake of political expediency.” “The author reveals how dishonest lobbying is dragging the United States government into the black hole of corrupt culture which eventually will destroy the nation the same way as the Roman Empire perished through rampant corruption exercised by the ruling class.”

Book Images of Westerners in Chinese and Japanese Literature

Download or read book Images of Westerners in Chinese and Japanese Literature written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is the product of a joint effort made by scholars from across China (including Hong Kong), Japan and Europe. The book gathers sixteen papers devoted to literary and cultural criticism from a comparative point of view. A perspective prominent in this volume is imagology, an approach first developed by Daniel-Henry Pageaux, and which focuses on specific images in literary and other texts. The study of the image of the “foreign” in national literary traditions, for instance, belongs to the traditional purview of comparative literature. Pageaux did more than uphold this tradition. He practically reinvented it using new theoretical concepts and perspectives (in particular, semiotics and reception aesthetics). On this basis, he was able to develop a theory and a methodology that are both usable and in tune with contemporary concerns. The present book covers a wide range of topics in the study of images of Westerners in Chinese and Japanese literature. Individual contributions deal with issues such as the genesis of the Chinese term Foreign Devil, the occurrence of Westerners in modern Chinese and Japanese literature, and the Chinese and Japanese reception of indiviual western authors and artists such as, amongst others, Oscar Wilde, Vincent Van Gogh, and Madame Roland. Some papers examine individual authors such as Lu Xun and Takeyama Michio. Others examine historical periods or literary movements. The approaches followed range from historical investigations of linguistic practices to detailed literary analyses.

Book Words on Words

Download or read book Words on Words written by David Crystal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-10-15 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Homer ("winged words") to Robert Burns ("Beware a tongue that's smoothly hung") to Rudyard Kipling ("Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind"), writers from all over the world have put pen to paper on the inexhaustible topic of language. Yet surprisingly, their writings on the subject have never been gathered in a single volume. In Words on Words, David and Hilary Crystal have collected nearly 5,000 quotations about language and all its intriguing aspects: speaking, reading, writing, translation, verbosity, usage, slang, and more. As the stock-in-trade of so many professions—orators, media personalities, writers, and countless others—language's appeal as a subject is extraordinarily relevant and wide-ranging. The quotations are grouped thematically under 65 different headings, from "The Nature of Language" through the "Language of Politics" to "Quoting and Misquoting." This arrangement enables the reader to explore a topic through a variety of lenses, ancient and modern, domestic and foreign, scientific and casual, ironic and playful. Three thorough indexes—to authors, sources, and key words—provide different entry points into the collection. A valuable resource for professional writers and scholars, Words on Words is for anyone who loves language and all things linguistic.
