Book The Poems of W B Yeats

Download or read book The Poems of W B Yeats written by Peter McDonald and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this multi-volume edition, the poetry of W.B. Yeats (1865–1939) is presented in full, with newly-established texts and detailed, wide-ranging commentary. Yeats began to write verse in the nineteenth century, and over time his own arrangements of poems repeatedly revised and rearranged both texts and canon. This edition of Yeats’s poetry presents all his verse, both published and unpublished, including a generous selection of textual variants from the many manuscript and printed sources. The edition also supplies the most extensive commentary on Yeats’s poetry to date, explaining specific references, and setting poems in their contexts; it also gives an account of the vast range of both literary and historical influences at work on the verse. The poems are presented in order of composition, and major revisions or rewritings of poems result in separate inclusions (in chronological sequence) for these writings as they were subsequently reconceived by the poet. In this second volume, the poems of Yeats’s early maturity emerge in the contexts of his engagement with Irish history and myth, along with nationalist politics; his increasing involvement with ritual magic and esoteric lore; and his turbulent, often unhappy, personal life. The poems of The Countess Kathleen and Various Legends and Lyrics (1892) reveal a poet of intense narrative power and metaphorical resource, adept at transforming miscellaneous sources into haunting and original poems. A major revision of his earlier narrative, ‘The Wanderings of Oisin’, takes place in this decade when Yeats is also taken up with the composition of elaborate and uncanny symbolic lyrics, many of them resulting from his love for Maud Gonne, that are finally collected in The Wind Among the Reeds (1899). This edition makes it possible to trace in detail Yeats’s debts to folklore and magic, alongside his involved and often difficult private and public life, in poetry of exceptional complexity and power.

Book Yeats s Poetry and Poetics

Download or read book Yeats s Poetry and Poetics written by Michael J. Sidnell and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yeats's Poetry and Poetics brings together some of the finest Yeats criticism ever published, together with some new pieces specially written for this volume. Spanning the whole of Yeats's career, the essays are organised into three main parts. The first deals with Yeats's concern with the speaking voice and its bearing on public and private readings of his verse; and on his use of certain kinds of images in his poetry and plays, from ghosts and fairies, to figures borrowed from painters and sculptors and, extraordinarily, to the actual dancer for whom he makes room in his work. The second section puts Yeats's poetry in context with the work of Synge, D.H. Lawrence, Walter de la Mare and other 'Georgians', and with that of T.S. Eliot and other modernists; assessing the continuities (real and asserted) in Yeats's long poetic career against the revolutions in the poetry of his time. The profound connections between the writings of Yeats and Joyce, including the coupling of Finnegans's Wake and 'The Wanderings of Oisin' are also examined. Rounding off the volume 'Phantasmagoria', explores the implications for his poetics of Yeats's spiritualist philosophy, especially in terms of his conception of the poetic self, and, finally, the last section analyses two works animated by Yeats's quest for the 'faery bride' and his desperate attempt to attract, through his work, a real one.

Book The Life and Letters of William Sharp and Fiona Macleod Volume 1 1855 1894

Download or read book The Life and Letters of William Sharp and Fiona Macleod Volume 1 1855 1894 written by William F. Halloran and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-27 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Sharp (1855-1905) conducted one of the most audacious literary deceptions of his or any time. Sharp was a Scottish poet, novelist, biographer and editor who in 1893 began to write critically and commercially successful books under the name Fiona Macleod. This was far more than just a pseudonym: he corresponded as Macleod, enlisting his sister to provide the handwriting and address, and for more than a decade "Fiona Macleod" duped not only the general public but such literary luminaries as William Butler Yeats and, in America, E. C. Stedman. Sharp wrote "I feel another self within me now more than ever; it is as if I were possessed by a spirit who must speak out". This three-volume collection brings together Sharp’s own correspondence – a fascinating trove in its own right, by a Victorian man of letters who was on intimate terms with writers including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Walter Pater, and George Meredith – and the Fiona Macleod letters, which bring to life Sharp’s intriguing "second self". With an introduction and detailed notes by William F. Halloran, this richly rewarding collection offers a wonderful insight into the literary landscape of the time, while also investigating a strange and underappreciated phenomenon of late-nineteenth-century English literature. It is essential for scholars of the period, and it is an illuminating read for anyone interested in authorship and identity.

Book The Brontes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harold Orel
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-07-27
  • ISBN : 1349251992
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book The Brontes written by Harold Orel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brontes, living in an isolated village in Yorkshire, wrote some of the most vivid, imaginative, and widely-read novels of the Victorian Age; they also became the subject-matter of romanticized anecdotes and regrettably distorted biographies. The best testimony about what kinds of men and women they really were comes from statements they made themselves; but because their autobiographical commentaries are sparse, the record is usefully supplemented in this anthology by first-hand statements made not only by various inhabitants of Haworth, but by those who met members of the Bronte family in Yorkshire, London, and elsewhere.
