Book The Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation

Download or read book The Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation written by Ang Cheng Guan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of the Manila Pact and the Southeast Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO) from its establishment in 1954 until its dissolution in 1977. The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) has received meagre scholarly attention in comparison to other key events and global developments during the duration of the Cold War, due to its perceived failure early in its existence. However, there has been a renewed interest in the academic study of the organization. Some scholars have argued that SEATO was not an outright failure. New literatures have also shed in detail the workings of SEATO, such as operational-level contingency plans and counter-insurgency plans. This book aims to reconstruct a comprehensive life cycle of SEATO using declassified archival documents which were unavailable to scholars studying the organization from the 1950s through the 1980s and provide a nuanced assessment of it. In addition, in recent years, there is also an emerging interest in the possibility of a multilateral military alliance in Asia, for instance the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue morphing into an "Asian NATO". As such, it is therefore crucial to study how previous multilateral alliances in the context of Asia were formed, how they functioned, and subsequently dissolved. A groundbreaking reference on a key element of the United States’ Cold War strategy in Asia, which will be a valuable resource to scholars of twentieth century diplomatic history.

Book excerpt: The Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) is a collective defense arrangement formed for the purpose of bringing peace and stability to Southeast Asia. Specifically, SEATO was designed to combat Communist-inspired insurgency and aggression in the treaty area. The Manila Treaty, which serves as the SEATO charter, was signed in 1954 by the United States, Great Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippine Islands. After ratification by all member nations, it became operative in February 1955. During its 11-year history, SEATO has achieved some notable successes and has experienced some serious failures. The most significant event in the latter category has been the failure to take concerted action against the Communist threat in Vietnam. SEATO's failure to act with unity and determination has raised doubts as to the future worth of the alliance. The feasible alternatives appear to be a drastically restructured SEATO, an all-Asian alliance led by either India or Japan, or a unilateral commitment by the United States to employ its military power to keep peace in Southeast Asia. Of these alternatives, a revised SEATO is believed to offer the greatest prospect of success.

Book The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Prelude to the War in Vietnam 1954 1959

Download or read book The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Prelude to the War in Vietnam 1954 1959 written by Willard J. Webb and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Historical Division, Joint Chiefs of Staff, the predecessor of the present Joint History Office, produced the manuscript "The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the War in Vietnam, 1954-1959," in 1972 as a Top Secret document. Based largely upon then classified State Department and Defense Department records, the History consists of eight chronological chapters and an Appendix describing the formation and functioning of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO). The chronological chapters cover the growing relationship of the United States after the Geneva Treaty of 1954 with the new Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) under President Ngo Dinh Diem; Diem's defeat of the various independent sects and his dominance over the South Vietnamese military; the awkward relationship between the U.S. mission and the remaining French units in Vietnam; the continuing hostility between the two Vietnams; and the beginning of the "Viet Cong" insurrection in the later years of the study. After the manuscript was declassified with only a few deletions, Dr. David A. Armstrong, the Director for Joint History, asked Jack Shulimson to review and revise the declassified version for publication. After a preliminary review, Mr. Shulimson suggested that the text needed little revision except for some updating and occasional smoothing of transitions. Consequently, changes in the body of the text were largely confined to small inserts with most of the new information and updates presented in the footnotes, which have also been revised to indicate where formerly classified materials appear in collections such as the "Pentagon Papers" and the State Department series, "Foreign Relations of the United States."
