Book The Timpani

Download or read book The Timpani written by Edmund Addison Bowles and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a unique iconographical and documentary history of the timpani. Combining a wealth of pictorial material with extensive written sources, it offers a rich and comprehensive survey of the instrument's history from the middle ages to the present. And in so doing it fills a gap of long standing in the published literature of kettledrums by providing for the first time a combination of visual and descriptive evidence. Presented here is a wide-ranging pictorial lode drawn from a variety of sources-for example, astronomical clocks with their instrumental automata; paintings; baroque organ cases topped by angel-musicians;engravings from books describing court festivals; prints and drawings; decorative etched glassware and inlaid tables; wood carvings; and photographs. Written references reflect a wide and fascinating panoply of descriptions concerning the construction, musical contexts and performance techniques of the timpani-for example, eyewitness accounts chronicling the role of instruments at various historical events; archival documents dealing with payments to musicians or the make-up of instrumental ensembles; regulations concerning court musicians; and even patent specifications. In addition, a prefatory chapter presents a detailed, succinct overview of the history, orchestral role and performance practices of the timpani, including numerous illustrative musical examples. A chart depicting representative milestones in the music for kettledrums highlights such works as the first published opera featuring timpani, the first major composition for two pairs of drums, music with unusual tunings, very high or very low notes demanding unusually small or large instruments, unique playing techniques, such as using the fingers, coins, a wire brush, etc., and the key examples of music requiring multiple timpani and two or more players in various configurations. In short, The Timpani: A History in Pictures and Documents is a fascinating and most unusual book of interest not only to performing musicians, teachers and scholars alike, but one which provides the general reader or music-lover with a glimpse into the world of a hitherto neglected musical instrument.

Book Encyclopedia of Percussion

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Percussion written by John H. Beck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of Percussion is an extensive guide to percussion instruments, organized for research as well as general knowledge. Focusing on idiophones and membranophones, it covers in detail both Western and non-Western percussive instruments. These include not only instruments whose usual sound is produced percussively (like snare drums and triangles), but those whose usual sound is produced concussively (like castanets and claves) or by friction (like the cuíca and the lion’s roar). The expertise of contributors have been used to produce a wide-ranging list of percussion topics. The volume includes: (1) an alphabetical listing of percussion instruments and terms from around the world; (2) an extensive section of illustrations of percussion instruments; (3) thirty-five articles covering topics from Basel drumming to the xylophone; (4) a list of percussion symbols; (5) a table of percussion instruments and terms in English, French, German, and Italian; and (6) an updated section of published writings on methods for percussion.

Book Handbook of Materials for Percussion Musical Instruments

Download or read book Handbook of Materials for Percussion Musical Instruments written by Voichita Bucur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the properties of materials used for making percussion instruments for classical music played by a symphony orchestra in which the instruments could be played as a soloist instrument or as a group or several groups of instruments, as they are included into a musical work. A chapter is devoted to the bells. The scope of this book is primarily confined to percussion instruments of symphony orchestras taking into account the centuries of musical art and tradition. This book bridges the gap in the technical literature on describing the properties of materials for percussion instruments—timpani, other drums, marimba, xylophone, vibraphone, gong, cymbal, triangle, celesta, castanets.

Book The Successful Use of Percussion in the Modern Orchestra as Exemplified by Three Works of Rogers Stravinsky and Bart k with Appended Recording

Download or read book The Successful Use of Percussion in the Modern Orchestra as Exemplified by Three Works of Rogers Stravinsky and Bart k with Appended Recording written by Ted C. Frazeur and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis is to show the successful use of percussion in the modern orchestra. With such men as Stravinsky, Bartók, and Rogers writing for the percussion has reached an artistic level in the orchestra comparable to that of the other members of the orchestral family of instruments. These composers, have, in my opinion, opened new doors in the discreet use of percussion, and thus, have greatly contributed to the ever-expanding orchestral timbre. I have presented their contributions through an analysis of the percussion writing in a major work of each (and also isolated examples from some of their other works); by showing how each has used percussion from the rhythmic, dynamic, and coloristic points of view, and how their usage has exemplified percussion as an intimate part of the modern composer's technique. Throughout the thesis, reference is made to the (R), (C), and (D) factors. This refers to passages which, generally speaking show a use of percussion for rhythm, coloration, or dynamics. The use of the word "successful" as applied here to the use of percussion by these composers, implies a certain culmination in the art of writing for the percussion as an integral part of' the orchestral sound. It does not imply that heretofore percussion has been habitually misused, or consigned to mere programmatic effects (for these men serve the program with percussion), but rather, that as in every art there are certain points of culmination in different areas of the art, at various phases of artistic thought. In other words I feel that these composers in their use of percussion are representative of the most sophisticated type of writing for that section yet achieved. Because of the subtle approach to the writing found in their work, it is necessary to dwell largely in the area of coloration. For this is the key to vitality in their usage of the percussion instruments -- their inherent ability to put the right timbre in precisely the right spot. An appended chart shows the frequency of usage of the color, rhythm, and dynamic factors with each. It is hoped that the chapter on notation problems and ranges will help clear up some of the mystery surrounding, the technical aide of writing for the percussion family as it stands today. Finally, the appended recording, which illustrates many of the percussion examples cited in the text, may prove to be an interesting aural adjunct.

Book The Modern Percussion Revolution

Download or read book The Modern Percussion Revolution written by Kevin Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than eighty years have passed since Edgard Varèse’s catalytic work for percussion ensemble, Ionisation, was heard in its New York premiere. A flurry of pieces for this new medium dawned soon after, challenging the established truths and preferences of the European musical tradition while setting the stage for percussion to become one of the most significant musical advances of the twentieth century. This 'revolution', as John Cage termed it, was a quintessentially modernist movement - an exploration of previously undiscovered sounds, forms, textures, and styles. However, as percussion music has progressed and become woven into the fabric of Western musical culture, several divergent paths, comprised of various traditions and a multiplicity of aesthetic sensibilities, have since emerged for the percussionist to pursue. This edited collection highlights the progressive developments that continue to investigate uncharted musical grounds. Using historical studies, philosophical insights, analyses of performance practice, and anecdotal reflections authored by some of today's most engaged performers, composers, and scholars, this book aims to illuminate the unique destinations found in the artistic journey of the modern percussionist.
