This book was released on 2016-09-04 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of the Historic Drama, Its Theory and Practice: A Study Based Chiefly on the Dramas of Elizabethan England and of Germany; A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Literature in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In the writing of history the pragmatic treatment of it has been trans formed, and almost absorbed, in the genetic treatment. As regards the writing of historic drama, however, the tyranny of the old type of the Aristotelian tragedy, or rationalistic individualist character-drama, still prevails, and makes it difficult for men to enter into the conception of the corporate, or historic movement type, with its more epic technique. By individualist character-drama I mean the drama of private interest, of typical characterization, of visible logical motivation, and of the guilt-and retribution conception of the fate-power. In the corporate type, on the other hand, the main interest and point of departure are not the private psychological, universally human experience of a chief character or two developed according to the guilt, recompense, and catharsis formula, but an historic movement, in which large and opposing and equally justified forces clash and produce, inevitably, in accordance with historic necessity, events of wide social concern.
