Book Railroads and Land Grant Policy

Download or read book Railroads and Land Grant Policy written by Lloyd J. Mercer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railroads and Land Grant Policy: A Study in Government Intervention attempts to replace a major part of the railroad land grant legend (according to which the granting of federal and state land to private railroad firms benefitted these firms more than it contributed to society as a whole) with some real numbers and analysis. An attempt is made to put the income and wealth distribution impact of the railroad land grants in perspective, but thorough analysis of this issue is not undertaken. The primary question this study does try to illuminate is that of the effect of the railroad land grants on economic efficiency. This emphasis was chosen because it seems clear that improvement of economic efficiency was the major goal that Congress and various state legislatures sought to attain, and thus the examination of economic efficiency questions is fundamental to evaluation of railroad land grant policy. This study will not completely replace the railroad land grant legend (because much is not covered here), but it does represent a considerable diminution of that legend.

Download or read book The Federal Railway Land Subsidy Policy of Canada written by James Blaine Hedges and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1934 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most historians have given only incidental attention to the railway land subsidy policy of the Dominion of Canada. In breaking comparatively new ground Mr. Hedges has therefore depended to a large extent upon manuscript sources in the archives of the Department of the Interior at Ottawa. He traces the various steps leading to the adoption of the Canadian policy and discusses in detail its development in connection with the administration of the subsidy to the Canadian Pacific. In his final chapter he sets forth the broad outlines of the methods the railways pursued in the administration and disposition of their lands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The little-known story of how the U.S. government came to hold nearly one-third of the nation’s land and manage it primarily for recreation, education and conservation. “A much-needed chronicle of how the American people decided––wisely and democratically––that nearly a third of the nation’s land surface should remain in our collective ownership and be managed for our common good.”—Dayton Duncan, author of The National Parks: America’s Best Idea America’s public lands include more than 600 million acres of forests, plains, mountains, wetlands, deserts, and shorelines. In this book, John Leshy, a leading expert in public lands policy, discusses the key political decisions that led to this, beginning at the very founding of the nation. He traces the emergence of a bipartisan political consensus in favor of the national government holding these vast land areas primarily for recreation, education, and conservation of biodiversity and cultural resources. That consensus remains strong and continues to shape American identity. Such a success story of the political system is a bright spot in an era of cynicism about government. This book is essential reading for anyone who cares about public lands, and it is particularly timely as the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.
