Book The Development of Congestion Performance Measures Using ITS Information

Download or read book The Development of Congestion Performance Measures Using ITS Information written by Sarah B. Medley and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to define a performance measure(s) that could be used to show congestion levels on critical corridors throughout Virginia and to develop a method to select and calculate performance measures to quantify congestion in a transportation system. Such measures could provide benchmarks or base values of congestion to aid in measuring changes in the performance of the highway system. A general method was developed to monitor congestion using performance measures and the intelligent transportation system information from the Virginia Smart Travel Lab. Two performance measures were selected for investigation: total delay and the buffer index. These performance measures were applied to evaluate congestion levels on the roadways in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. Each measure shows a different dimension of congestion. In general, total delay is better suited for use by transportation professionals because it is given in units of vehicle-minutes and applies to all vehicles on a segment of roadway. The buffer index is suitable for use by the public because it addresses individual vehicle trip travel time and can be used for trip planning. The buffer index is also important to transportation professionals as a measure of variability. This research provides information on the changing state of congestion on selected corridors throughout Virginia. It will help the Virginia Department of Transportation determine the best ways to measure congestion and provide a way to compare congestion over periods of time to ascertain if the delay has grown worse or improved. This research can also help establish a benchmark for traveler delay on Virginia's roadways.

Book Measuring and Improving Infrastructure Performance

Download or read book Measuring and Improving Infrastructure Performance written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nation's physical infrastructure facilitates movement of people and goods; provides safe water; provides energy when and where needed; removes wastes; enables rapid communications; and generally supports our economy and quality of life. Developing a framework for guiding attempts at measuring the performance of infrastructure systems and grappling with the concept of defining good performance are the major themes of this book. Focusing on urban regions, within a context of national policy, the volume provides the basis for further in-depth analysis and application at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

Book Performance Measures for Analyzing Real time Freeway Operations

Download or read book Performance Measures for Analyzing Real time Freeway Operations written by Robert E. Brydia and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of real-time performance measurement analyzes feedback from the operational response to freeway incident conditions and provides a quantitative methodology for assessing the impacts of various operational strategies. The significance of this technique is that it can enhance the efficiency of freeway incident management. Even a small percent reduction in the length of an incident would accrue millions of dollars of time-savings for the affected portion of the roadway. The design and construction of a real-time performance measurement system require an understanding of the performance measures and their application to transportation, a review of the state-of-the-practice in performance measurement, and an experimental design on which to build a prototype system.

Book Freight Performance Measure Approaches for Bottlenecks Arterials and Linking Volumes to Congestion Report

Download or read book Freight Performance Measure Approaches for Bottlenecks Arterials and Linking Volumes to Congestion Report written by Richard Margiotta and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Section 1115 of MAP-21 (“National Freight Policy”) specifically requires the development of new tools and improvement to existing tools to support the analysis and evaluation of freight transportation projects in order to more strategically target investments and improve performance of the transportation system. This report deals with three aspects of this directive: 1. Comprehensive analysis of freight bottlenecks—research and evaluation of national and state level approaches to identifying freight bottlenecks and methodologies for measuring the performance of truck freight bottlenecks; 2. Arterial mobility performance—development of methods that produce valid and reliable performance measures from truck-based probe data, speed and travel times; and 3. Linkage of truck volumes to congestion methodologies—development of methods for integrating travel times from truck probe data with truck volumes, flows, and demands. The National Performance Management Research Data Set (NPMRDS) is being used to develop examples of the recommended analysis.

Book Evaluation and Performance Measurement of Congestion Pricing Projects

Download or read book Evaluation and Performance Measurement of Congestion Pricing Projects written by Benjamin Gerry Perez and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These guidelines are intended for transportation practitioners involved in the planning, design, and operation of congestion-pricing projects. They will help agencies select or develop measures to evaluate these projects, collect the necessary data, track performance, and communicate the results to decision makers, users, and the general public.
