Book The Development of Non Agricultural Economic Activity in Poland s Rural Areas

Download or read book The Development of Non Agricultural Economic Activity in Poland s Rural Areas written by Jerzy Bański and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article, devoted to the issue of non-agricultural economic activity in rural areas, reports upon the latest statistical data, as well as material obtained by way of field study. Successive sections acquaint the reader with the contemporary functional structure of rural areas, the areas in which non-agricultural businesses are concentrated, the development of new functions in the countryside and factors favoring this development. The summary notes that Poland's period of transformation brought a dynamic development of activity of the above kind, albeit one that has not yet been able to make up for the earlier closedown of state-owned or cooperative enterprises. The greatest development of non-agricultural economic activity has been observed in city hinterland areas and has first and foremost involved the service sector and trade. In turn, the peripheral areas left more or less to their own devices have experienced slower development of business outside agriculture, in association with such unfavorable phenomena manifested therein as depopulation, unemployment, lack of investment, etc. These all contribute to deepening of the poverty existing in the aforementioned areas.

Book Transforming the Functional Structure of Poland s Rural Areas

Download or read book Transforming the Functional Structure of Poland s Rural Areas written by Jerzy Bański and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article is devoted to changes in the functional structure of Poland's rural areas in the years 1988-1999, that is - in the period of transition from the socialist to market economy and the country's preparations for the EU accession. As the result of functional classification of rural areas carried out in 1999, it proved possible to identify ten functional classes, which can be associated into five groups (i.e. areas with an agricultural function, with equal contribution from different functions, with prevalent forestry, with prevalent tourist/rest-and-recreation function, and with prevalent non-agricultural function). The functional classification obtained revealed that the ten-year period brought a strengthening of the agricultural function in central and eastern Poland, while the West and parts of the South witnessed an increase in the significance of functions outside agriculture. The latter were the result of the development of new economic activities, including farms engaging in the processing of agricultural products and the rendering of different kinds of services. In areas with a prevailing agricultural function, there has in general been a decline in the significance of the market- related agriculture, and an increase of its role in the self-supply for rural inhabitants.

Book Socio Economic Benefits from Non Agricultural Economic Activity Conducted by Farmers

Download or read book Socio Economic Benefits from Non Agricultural Economic Activity Conducted by Farmers written by Artur Ostromęcki and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper aims at identifying and assessing the opinions of farmers concerning the socio-economic benefits from non-agricultural activity they conduct towards their agricultural holding, farming family and rural areas on the territory where these units operate. The empirical material for the paper was provided by surveys carried out in 2011-2012, i.e. questionnaire-based interview, among 210 farmers - owners of individual agricultural holdings - running additional non-agricultural economic activity from the area of south-eastern Poland, namely the following three voivodeships: Świętokrzyskie, Małopolskie and Podkarpackie. The classification of the surveyed farms into two groups, which was based on the conditions of the aforementioned opinions, and analysis of differences in the assessment of benefits between these groups, using the Mann-Whitney test, allowed to define the key determinants of farmers' opinions on the socio-economic significance of the non-agricultural economic activity they conduct. An important determinant was the share of income from non-agricultural economic activity of farmers in the structure of their family's sources of income. The surveys showed that, in the opinion of farmers, the higher the ratio for the share, the greater the significance of the analysed socio-economic benefits following from non-agricultural activity conducted by them.

Book The Changing Face of Rural Space

Download or read book The Changing Face of Rural Space written by Julian Lampietti and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-05-04 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although at different stages of development, the countries of the Western Balkans—Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, and Serbia—face similar challenges in transforming and modernizing their agricultural food production (agri-food) sectors. Their rural sectors have lagged behind the rest of the economy in growth and poverty reduction, their agri-food sectors are undercapitalized and highly fragmented, and their agro-processing capacities limited. Agricultural trade deficits are widening, climate change is posing increasing risks to farm incomes, and low-cost imports and changing consumer preferences are further eroding competitiveness. Added to this scenario are the challenges and opportunities of adopting the EU 'acquis communautaire' relating to agriculture. Based on recent World Bank reports prepared in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the European Commission Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development, 'The Changing Face of Rural Space: Agriculture and Rural Development in the Western Balkans' identifies what is constraining agricultural competitiveness in these countries, examines public expenditures in agriculture, and diagnoses key challenges for agricultural policy makers. The book expands on previous findings to provide a strategic policy framework for transforming and modernizing the agri-food sector and, in the context of region’s ongoing process of integration with the European Union, creating a dynamic rural space in the Western Balkans. The book offers Western Balkan governments and international donors a shared vision of the goals and directions their agriculture and rural development policies and programs might take.

In addition, it will lead to improvements in stakeholder relations, and explains how tourism best works with localities and localities with tourism. This book was originally published as a special issue of Tourism Geographies.

Book World Development Report 2009

Download or read book World Development Report 2009 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2008-11-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising densities of human settlements, migration and transport to reduce distances to market, and specialization and trade facilitated by fewer international divisions are central to economic development. The transformations along these three dimensions density, distance, and division are most noticeable in North America, Western Europe, and Japan, but countries in Asia and Eastern Europe are changing in ways similar in scope and speed. 'World Development Report 2009: Reshaping Economic Geography' concludes that these spatial transformations are essential, and should be encouraged. The conclusion is not without controversy. Slum-dwellers now number a billion, but the rush to cities continues. Globalization is believed to benefit many, but not the billion people living in lagging areas of developing nations. High poverty and mortality persist among the world's 'bottom billion', while others grow wealthier and live longer lives. Concern for these three billion often comes with the prescription that growth must be made spatially balanced. The WDR has a different message: economic growth is seldom balanced, and efforts to spread it out prematurely will jeopardize progress. The Report: documents how production becomes more concentrated spatially as economies grow. proposes economic integration as the principle for promoting successful spatial transformations. revisits the debates on urbanization, territorial development, and regional integration and shows how today's developers can reshape economic geography.
