Book On the Marriage of First Cousins Classic Reprint

Download or read book On the Marriage of First Cousins Classic Reprint written by Ethel M. Elderton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Marriage of First Cousins The question of kinship in marriage, within what degrees it should be permitted, and whether near of kin should be allowed and even encouraged to marry has attracted attention and provoked discussion from very early times. Reasoned Objection to marriages Of near kin on the grounds Of harm to the Offspring, however, seems to be Of relatively late growth. Plato, in the Laws, says that the reason why such marriages are forbidden (he is re ferring to the marriage Of brother and sister) is simply habit and custom, as were such marriages allowed people would marry those most like themselves, which would prevent the proper mixture of character and property. Book Kinship and Marriage in Early Arabia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Kinship and Marriage in Early Arabia Classic Reprint written by William Robertson Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kinship and Marriage in Early Arabia The present edition of Kimezjfi and Ma7riage in Early Ameia is no mere reprint of the work, which from its freshness and originality attracted the attention of Semitic scholars and anthropologists in 1885 and laid the foundation of all subsequent research in this department of studies. During the nine years which elapsed between its publication and his lamented death, Robertson Smith had collected additional notes and references in his own interleaved copy, and there were indications that he contemplated the preparation of a second edition, and had even marked out for himself certain features and lines of argument which he proposed to develop. Book The Development of Marriage and Kinship

Download or read book The Development of Marriage and Kinship written by C. Staniland Wake and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Marriage and Kinship In the preface to "The Evolution of Morality," published in 1878, reasons were given for dealing only incidentally in that work with sexual morality. The justification for the course then pursued is to be found in the present volume, which could not then have been written; although the second edition of Dr J. F. M'Lennan's "Primitive Marriage" had appeared in 1876, with certain additions, under the title of Studies in Ancient History, and in 1877 had been published Dr Lewis H. Morgan's "Ancient Society," which severely criticised Dr M'Lennan's views. It was not until the appearance, in 1880, of the result of the enquiries made by the Rev. Lorimer Fison and Mr A. W. Howitt into the system of marriage and relationship in use among the aborigines of Australia, under the title of "Kamilaroi and Kurnai," that a serious attempt to deal with the whole subject of sexual morality was possible. Such an attempt is made by the present work, during the preparation of which I have had the advantage of corresponding with Mr Fison, with reference to the Australian system, and I have to thank him and Mr Howitt for their ready consent to my making use of information received from them. If Dr J. F. M'Lennan had lived, however, this work might not have appeared. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Marriage of Near Kin

Download or read book The Marriage of Near Kin written by Alfred Henry Huth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marriage of Near Kin: Considered With Respect to the Law of Nations, the Results of Experience, and the Teachings of Biology The first condition is easily secured, because it only requires a little mechanical arrangement; but how are we to know whether a given couple should be allowed to marry or not? Were either insane we should not allow it, because we know that the chances are the progeny would also be insane. If a parent of either had become insane after marriage then we should not prohibitit, because, though there would be a good chance that insanity was become hereditary in the family, yet there would also be a good chance that the children might escape any hereditary taint, and the risk of prohibition would therefore be too great, we could not, for the sake of possible good, drive to a positive evil. For the same reason, or possiblyfrom motives of humanity, we do not dissolve a sterile marriage as so many nations have done, and still do. The benefit in a great and fertile population would be very doubtful; the evil most assured. And yet we prohibit marriages be tween near kin. Is then the immorality caused by certain of these prohibitions nothing; and Is the gain so very great? The sole reason why we now prohibit these mar riages, is that our fathers did so, and their fathers did so before them. Yet our fathers permitted marriage between crétins, lepers, and between many other persons, in cases where we should now prohibit it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Kinship: An African Study In the meantime it is obvious that among the Baila matrilineal descent is fighting a losing battle, and there can be little doubt that, if they had been left to the play of the forces of native culture only, they would sooner or later have adopted patrilineal kinship, as other Bantu tribes have done. While the tendency to change from kinship through the mother to kinship through the father is universal among the Bantu every tribe seeks for itself the solution of the problem how to effect the transfer. We will inquire how some of them have accomplished or are seeking to accomplish it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Universal Kinship Classic Reprint written by J. Howard Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Kinship The Universal Kinship means the kinship of all the inhabitants of the planet Earth. Whether they came into existence among the waters or among desert sands, in a hole in the earth, in the hollow of a tree, or in a palace; whether they build nests or empires; whether they swim, fly, crawl, or ambulate; and whether they realise it or not, they are all related, physically, mentally, morally - this is the thesis of this book. But since man is the most gifted and influential of animals, and since his relationship with other animals is more important and more reluctantly recognised than any other, the chief purpose Of these pages is' to prove and interpret the kinship of the human species with the other species of animals.
