Book The Just and the Lively

Download or read book The Just and the Lively written by Michael Werth Gelber and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dryden is the father of English literary criticism. In The Just and the Lively, Michael Werth Gelber provides the first complete study of his criticism since Dryden's death almost three hundred years ago. Through a detailed reading of each of his essays, the book explains and illustrates the unity and the development of Dryden's thought. It demonstrates that, even as he based his first principles on his own poems and plays, Dryden tried to resolve what, since the early sixteenth century, had been a key problem in western literature: how to reconcile the demand of classical unity with the bewildering variety of Renaissance drama and romance. The figure who emerges from these pages is a man deeply responsive to the social, political, and intellectual currents of his age. An important influence on critics as diverse as Samuel Johnson and T. S. Eliot, Dryden retains the power to enlighten and delight the reader of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of John Dryden's Literary Criticism The opinion which seeks to belittle Dryden' 5 critical power is represented by Delius in his dissertation, Dryden and shajcespeare.2 Here Dryden is represented as caught in the meshes of contemporary doctrine. The dictum that his appreciation of Shakespeare was merely phrasenhaft is softened only by the statement that an adequate recognition of the great Elizabethan was contrary to his very nature and would have interfered seriously with the development of his genius. Book The Works of John Dryden

Download or read book The Works of John Dryden written by John Dryden and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-22 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After John Donne and John Milton, John Dryden was the greatest English poet of the 17th century. After William Shakespeare and Ben Jonson, he was the greatest playwright. And he has no peer as a writer of prose, especially literary criticism, and as a translator. Other figures, such as George Herbert, may figure more prominently in anthologies and literary histories, but Dryden's sustained output in both poetry and drama ranks him higher. After Shakespeare, he wrote the greatest heroic play of the century. As a writer of prose he developed a lucid professional style, relying on patterns and rhythms of everyday speech. As a critic he developed a combination of methods--historical, analytical, evaluative, dialogic--that helped grow the neoclassical theory of literary criticism. As a translator he developed an easy manner of what he called paraphrase that produced brilliant versions of Homer, Lucretius, Horace, Ovid, Juvenal, Persius, Giovanni Boccaccio, Geoffrey Chaucer, and above all Virgil. His translation of The Aeneid remains the best ever produced in English.

Book The Faith of John Dryden

Download or read book The Faith of John Dryden written by George Douglas Atkins and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dryden's celebrated conversion to Roman Catholicism is revealed in this provocative study as the culmination of a lifelong search that began with his youth in an actively Puritan family. Atkin's familiarity with the religious thought of the times allows him to range widely among Dryden's contemporaries and predecessors and to bring a fresh perspective to those key poems in Dryden's religious development: Religio Laici and The Hind and the Panther. Through a sensitive reappraisal of all Dryden's texts -- including those less widely known -- Atkins shows that Dryden had a lifelong antipathy for all "priests" of whatever sect, whether pagan or Christian; by concentrating on the theme of Dryden's opposition to the clergy and his efforts toward articulating a faith for the layman, Atkins provides an important new way of tracing and evaluating the changes in Dryden's religious position and, with this perspective, offers a new interpretation of Dryden's conversion.
