Book The Sogo Shosha

Download or read book The Sogo Shosha written by Alexander Young and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sogo shosha, Japan's general trading companies, are regarded as a key element in the country's rapid economic growth after World War II and its great success in international trade. In Japanese fiscal year 1975, the ten largest sogo shosha had total sales of $155 billion, accounting for 56 percent of Japan's exports and imports, 18 percent of domestic wholesale trade, and 31 percent of GNP. On the international level, the transactions of these companies in the same year were 5 percent of world export trade. This book—the first comprehensive, English-language work on the sogo shosha—systematically describes and analyzes the basic characteristics, business methods, sales and profit trends, strategies, national roles, global reach, strengths and weaknesses, and future prospects of these global trading conglomerates. In examining both the national and the global facets of the sogo shosha, the author presents the economic and social origins of the ten largest companies, how they differ from the pre-World War II zaibatsu, and how they resemble and differ from Western multinational corporations. A wealth of statistical and tabular material supplements his account of the sogo shosha as Japan's chief importers of foodstuffs, raw materials, and equipment; as the advance guard of Japanese exports; as a driving force to rationalize the domestic distribution system; and as investor-organizers of multinational overseas natural resource development programs.

Book Japanese Companies in East Asia

Download or read book Japanese Companies in East Asia written by Hirohiko Shinpo and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventy years have passed since the end of World War II. Although feelings and incidents between the victorious and the defeated nations have not disappeared, new relationships have reshaped the post World War II social, economic and political landscape, such as the establishment of the European Union and the Japan-U.S. alliance. Scholars and historians are attempting to objectively reexamine World War II. The passage of time has terminated the copyrights for the relevant document. The expectation now is more objective research on the economy and business in the inter-war period. The first edition of Japanese Companies in East Asia: History and Prospects discussed the position and role of Japanese companies in East Asia, investigating competition and alliances with Asian companies in the prewar and postwar periods. Part 1 examines Japanese investment in China in the inter-war period, and the economic competition and collaboration between Japanese and Chinese companies. Part 2 considers the current relationships between Japan and Asia, especially China and Taiwan. The success of Asian export-oriented industrialization forced Japanese companies to expand their alliances with Asian companies in leading industries. The first edition of this book was published in 2012. Since then, I have published three papers on Japanese investment and companies in the inter-war period, which are the new Part 2 of the enlarged and revised second edition. The new Part 2 illuminates the development of market-centered corporate governance and foreign direct investment based on it, and presents specific examples of collaboration between Japanese companies and host countries and regions. My recent paper, which is Chapter 9 in the new Part 3, focused on the ASEAN 100 companies and discussed the rapid economic growth and globalization of ASEAN and the remarkable expansion of relations between Japan and ASEAN. Part 3 shows that the globalization of the Japanese economy and Japanese companies are progressing on the common basis of a market economy and market-centered corporate governance in East Asia.I would appreciate readers following my research through visiting my previous and new website: http://www.hshimpo.com/en/index.php and https://sites.google.com/site/hshimpoen/.

Book The Invisible Link

Download or read book The Invisible Link written by Michael Y. Yoshino and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sogo shosha is like no other type of company. "The Invisible Link "provides a systematic and well-balanced description that covers virtually all aspects of sogo shosha operations, from finance to personnel. The sogo shosha is not defined by the products it handles or even by the services it performs, for it offers a broad and changing array of goods and functions. Its business goals are equally elusive, for maximization of profits from each transaction is clearly not the major goal, at either the operating or philosophical level. The sogo shosha could be broadly defined as a large, diversified, multinational enterprise engaged primarily in trading. Yet it is a uniquely Japanese business operation whose structural and strategic dynamics have no close counterparts in North America and Europe. There are only nine sogo shosha in Japan - six of them of major significance - and the largest employs fewer than 15,000. Among them, they handle about one-half of all of Japan's exports and imports. The sogo shosha typically deal in bulk in products that are highly standardized and technologically unsophisticated - raw materials, commodities, intermediary products. A large sogo shosha will finance, develop, manufacture and/or carry over 20,000 different items, "from noodles to missiles" as one slogan has it."The Invisible Link "gives detailed coverage to such topics as historical evolution of the sogo shosha, strategic responses and competitive dynamics, culture and organization, administrative structures and processes, human resource systems, career outcomes, interunit and interfirm coordination, sectional and network organization, and emerging challenges as the nature of the Japanese economy changes.M. Y Yoshino is Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. Two of his books, "Japan's Managerial System" and "The Japanese Marketing System," were published by The MIT Press. Thomas B. Lifson is an Associate in the Program on US-Japan Relations at Harvard University.

Book Economic Policy in Postwar Japan

Download or read book Economic Policy in Postwar Japan written by Kozo Yamamura and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Pacific War, Japan has, broadly speaking, pursued two economic policies: a "democratization" policy laid down by the Allied Powers, and subsequently a "de-democratization" policy formulated and vigorously pursued by the independent government. Yamamura here addresses himself to two central questions: What were the objectives and results of each policy? And why and how did the earlier one give way to the later? Yamamura never loses sight of his main theme--the transformation of the economic "democratization" policy of the Occupation period into the growth policy pursued by the Japanese government thereafter. He is concerned not so much to provide a comprehensive study of Japanese economic policy as to examine selected facets of it--for example, taxation policies, anti- and pro-monopoly legislation, the position of the Zaibatsu, and the social costs of economic concentration. He deals with topics that are hotly debated in Japan and elsewhere, but his tone is never polemical, and his judgments are cool and scholarly. Book German Business Management

Download or read book German Business Management written by Toshio Yamazaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are German capitalism and German business management to be understood from the perspective of Japan? Both Germany and Japan as defeated nations in World War II received significant American leadership and support after the war. Both countries developed their enterprises, industries, and economy by deploying and adapting technology and management methods from the United States while establishing systems of industrial concentration in their own ways. By these means, both nations became major trading countries. However, current economic and business conditions differ greatly between Germany and Japan. In trade, American influence on Japanese business is still strong. Japan could not and cannot establish a complementary relationship with American industrial sectors and their products in the American market. In addition, a common market structure like the E.U. does not exist in Asia. In contrast to Japan, Germany developed independently from the American influence and became part of a well-integrated regional economy. What were the driving forces that created those differences? That question is approached from a Japanese point of view in this book, based on the assumption that the origins of distinct characteristics of German business management after World War II were developed in the 1950s and ’60s. The book analyzes the transformation of business management in Germany and explains the characteristics and structures of German management. The author describes how the development of German companies determined the current German condition— “the Europeanization of Germany”—while the world faced the globalization process. Demonstrating the basic foundation of European integration by analyzing market factors in Europe as well as the internal structural transformation of management in Germany, this book is a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students, educators, and researchers in the fields of business management, business history, and economic history.

Book Zaibatsu The Rise and Fall of Family Enterprise Groups in Japan

Download or read book Zaibatsu The Rise and Fall of Family Enterprise Groups in Japan written by Hidemasa Morikawa and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zaibatsu are central to the economic history of modern Japan. These family-owned business groups, some of which grew to immense size, reached their mature form in the early decades of the twentieth century and dominated numerous sectors of the economy until their dissolution under the Allied Occupation following World War II. They provided much of the impetus for the country's modern economic development, and many large-scale companies that today wield enormous influence over the contemporary world economy had their origins in the zaibatsu. It is the objective of this book to clarify why and how the zaibatsu became leaders in the economy as it developed during the prewar period. Focusing on ten major zaibatsu, Professor Morikawa, an eminent scholar of business history, studies the factors that marked the history of zaibatsu and the political and economic times in which they thrived. Among the many themes discussed are their diversification strategy and system of multisubsidiaries, which encompassed various key industries of the economy - mining and steel, shipbuilding and shipping, trading, banking and life insurance; relationships within the owner family as well as with the salaried staff; and government policy.
