Book Managing the Forest for Sustainable Development

Download or read book Managing the Forest for Sustainable Development written by Firdos Ahmad and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, Aligarh Muslim University (Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, India; Department of Economics), language: English, abstract: Forest is an important renewable resource and play vital role in the economic development of a developing country like India since the existence of human civilizations. They are rich sources of energy, housing, firewood, timber and fodder and they provide employment to a large section of the rural population. They also plays critical role in maintaining the ecological balance. The present consumption level and supply of forest products reveals that there is shortage of supply of forest products in comparison to its demand for various purposes except for wrapping, packaging paper and paper board and it is also expected to increase in near future because of rising population and growing economy which will make the realization of goal of sustainable development more difficult. Since we can neither stop the growth of population nor we can restrict the development of our country, there is only one option i.e. increasing the forest cover area and the density of existing forests. For this purpose we will find out those states in which there is shortfall of forest cover against the standard forest area. The result of the study reveals that the states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalya, Mizoram, Assam, Nagaland and Tripura are in comfortable position and there is no need to over emphasis on the management of forest in these states. But for the states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal etc. the forest cover area is not comfortable and there is need to manage the forest and adopt the policy of aforestation especially in wasteland

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are receiving unprecedented world-wide attention for their crucial role in the mitigation of climate change; conservation of biodiversity; regulation of water cycle and maintenance of livelihoods. That includes the social and economic benefits from timber; fuelwood; non-wood forest products and wildlife; among other items. Apart from gainful employment and income generation potential for rural communities and self-reliant subsistence of forest dwellers; forests provide a range of environmental services fundamental for human wellbeing; they help protect land and water resources; conserve and improve soils; store carbon and provide significant intrinsic and aesthetic values for people. Yet the continuing deforestation and forest degradation; especially in the poverty afflicted developing countries; threaten the very future of their civilization; while escalating the food insecurity and vulnerability of world’s forest-dependent poorest people. Given the global prospects and problems of the planet’s welfare associated with forests; an effective international response is warranted without further procrastination to ensure sustainable management and conservation of the earth’s forest resource assets. In this context; awareness-raising by launching the International year of Forests 2011 (IYF) is timely. This book on ‘Forests for Sustainability’ is dedicated to the mission of the IYF and the Indian Forest Congress. It is oriented to highlighting the opportunities and challenges for enhancing forestry related livelihoods & sustainability. The book conveys key messages of coordinated effort needed worldwide to use the right mix of regulatory; market based and informational instruments for promoting the improvement of state of forests and related dimensions of the environment and livelihoods.

It should be of interest to policy-makers and to all those who have been involved with the struggle of transforming forestry over the decades.DR MARY HOBLEY, HOBLEY SHIELDS ASSOCIATES (NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND PLANNING CONSULTANCY)A rare combination of extensive field study, social science insights and policy studies will be of immense valueDR N. C. SAXENA, MEMBER OF NATIONAL ADVISORY COUNCIL, GOVERNMENT OF INDIAIn recent decades participatory approaches to forest management have been introduced around the world. This book assesses their implementation in the highly politicized environments of India and Nepal. The authors critically examine the policy, implementation processes and causal factors affecting livelihood impacts. Considering narratives and field practice, with data from over 60 study villages and over 1000 household interviews, the book demonstrates why particular field outcomes have occurred and why policy reform often proves so difficult. Research findings on which the book is based are already influencing policy in India and Nepal, and the research and analysis have great relevance to forestry management in a wide range of countries.Published with DFID.

Book Forest Resources of India

Download or read book Forest Resources of India written by Arjun Yallappa Pangannavar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In India, forests play a vital role in the social, cultural, economic, and industrial development of the country and help to maintain India's ecological balance. These forests are important to the livelihood of India's tribal people. However, population growth, poverty, and a weak institutional framework have caused forest depletion and degradation, raising concerns about environmental safety. There is need for forest services to become more specialized and to receive political, infrastructural, and financial support. India's central and state governments must also alter their priorities and mindset. For too long, forests have been regarded as an earning sector. It is time to recognize forests as repository of biodiversity, natural heritage, and a provider of ecologic and biotic goods and services. The passage of India's Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006 has set the scene for the correction of the historical injustice suffered by India's forest dwellers and tribal people. The effective implementation of the Act holds out the promise that the enormous bounty of natural resources that India's tribal areas are endowed with can be harnessed for the holistic development of the tribal people themselves. This book explains and examines various aspects of forest and wildlife policies, programs, and management in India.
