Download or read book Critical Analysis of Science Textbooks written by Myint Swe Khine and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The critical analysis of science textbooks is vital in improving teaching and learning at all levels in the subject, and this volume sets out a range of academic perspectives on how that analysis should be done. Each chapter focuses on an aspect of science textbook appraisal, with coverage of everything from theoretical and philosophical underpinnings, methodological issues, and conceptual frameworks for critical analysis, to practical techniques for evaluation. Contributions from many of the most distinguished scholars in the field give this collection its sure-footed contemporary relevance, reflecting the international standards of UNESCO as well as leading research organizations such as the American Association for the Advancement of Science (whose Project 2061 is an influential waypoint in developing protocols for textbook analysis). Thus the book shows how to gauge aspects of textbooks such as their treatment of controversial issues, graphical depictions, scientific historiography, vocabulary usage, accuracy, and readability. The content also covers broader social themes such as the portrayal of women and minorities. "Despite newer, more active pedagogies, textbooks continue to have a strong presence in classrooms and to embody students’ socio-historical inheritance in science. Despite their ubiquitous presence, they have received relatively little on-going empirical study. It is imperative that we understand how textbooks influence science learning. This book presents a welcome and much needed analysis." Tina A. Grotzer Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA The present book provides a much needed survey of the current state of research into science textbooks, and offers a wide range of perspectives to inform the 'science' of writing better science textbooks. Download or read book A Disciplinary Blueprint for the Assessment of Information Literacy written by Dorothy Anne Warner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever worried that literature on library instruction deals more with methods of assessing student attitude than student learning? If so, you'll be glad to know someone is doing something about it! Eight unique disciplinary modules are presented, each identifying a series of information literacy objectives developed in accordance with Bloom's Taxonomy of Cognitive Objectives. A substantive curriculum map embedded within each module lists the sequence of courses required for the disciplinary major and the level at which the course is taught (sophomore, junior, etc.), notes whether information literacy instruction is currently taught by the library for that particular course, and delineates the specific information literacy learning objectives the students must master in order to fulfill the course assignments. Collaborative responsibility for teaching the information literacy skills is also outlined, with specific recommendations for ways the library can strengthen its support for the specific discipline. In addition, assessment methodologies are identified; including scoring rubrics designed specifically for the disciplinary information literacy objectives. An indispensable resource for academic librarians ready to take the leap from episodic reactive response to programmatic sequenced integration into the curriculum.
Download or read book Evaluation Methodology Basics written by E. Jane Davidson and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluation Methodology Basics introduces evaluation by focusing on the main kinds of 'big picture' questions that evaluations usually need to answer, and how the nature of such questions are linked to evaluation methodology choices. The author: shows how to identify the right criteria for your evaluation; discusses how to objectively figure out which criteria are more important than the others; and, delves into how to combine a mix of qualitative and quantitative data with 'relevant values' (such as needs) to draw explicitly evaluative conclusions.

Download or read book National Assessment of Educational Progress 1969 1983 written by Theodore B. Pratt and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its first 14 years of existence, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) was located at the Education Commission of the States (ECS). This annotated bibliography of 575 references lists all major publications by or about NAEP published between 1969 and 1983. References are in a classified arrangement, by specific or special assessment. Documents not dealing with a specific assessment are grouped by: Methodological Publications; Special Analyses; and General and Miscellaneous. Materials by NAEP are separated from materials about NAEP done by external organizations. Subject, Personal Author, and Preparing Institution indexes are provided. The compilation is based on materials (documents and journal articles) archived in the database of the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC), and therefore most documents cited can be obtained through the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS). Download or read book Multiple Representations in Chemical Education written by John K. Gilbert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemistry seeks to provide qualitative and quantitative explanations for the observed behaviour of elements and their compounds. Doing so involves making use of three types of representation: the macro (the empirical properties of substances); the sub-micro (the natures of the entities giving rise to those properties); and the symbolic (the number of entities involved in any changes that take place). Although understanding this triplet relationship is a key aspect of chemical education, there is considerable evidence that students find great difficulty in achieving mastery of the ideas involved. In bringing together the work of leading chemistry educators who are researching the triplet relationship at the secondary and university levels, the book discusses the learning involved, the problems that students encounter, and successful approaches to teaching. Based on the reported research, the editors argue for a coherent model for understanding the triplet relationship in chemical education.
