Book excerpt: Musicological studies into the works of English composer, Cyril Scott (1879-1970), will almost ubiquitously include a brief and circumspect reference to his avowed “occult” interests. Considered for a time to be one of the most promising talents of the English Musical Renaissance, Scott is certainly a figure of great interest in the context of British music history; however, the fanatical nature of his personal activities and belief system have typically dissuaded researchers from venturing beyond a bare consideration of his music. The difficulties associated with approaching Scott’s belief system are similar to those regarding his biographical detail, including issues of authenticity, representation and “veiling.” As a result, much of Scott’s thinking has remained hidden in his sizable literary oeuvre, untouched by musicologists. Within his literary output is revealed a distinct line of developing aesthetic thought, culminating in a theory which he considered to have been his greatest achievement.

As to the first, our simile has attempted to show it must lead to creative stagnation, and to nowhere beyond, for it may be regarded as a species of pharisaism in art, a petty adherence to rule and letter, ignoring the true spirit; the value of originality, individuality, and self-expression in its highest sense. In a word, it may be described as a profane contentment, because it is the enemy of divine evolution, and should it vanquish its opponents, which, of course, it never can do, then no more could a masterpiece be created in the world of art. The truth is, classicalism is based, at any rate in music, upon a gigantic misconception - the misconception that any great genius was ever Classical in Ms day. Only in relatively recent times has any real attention been given to British symphonies. So a comprehensive survey, showing what exists and how the situation in the United Kingdom developed, from the beginnings in the 18th century until well into the 20th century, is long overdue. The preliminary survey presented here shows how a British symphonic identity gradually took shape over more than a century, through influences from abroad and, at home, enterprising attempts to find new ways of expression. By the end of the 19th century, British symphonists had produced an impressive body of work, yet only with the appearance of Elgar’s two symphonies in the following decade did this flourishing school find a champion of international renown. In this publication, light is shone on those works that have to some extent been overshadowed, as well as on those that have remained unpublished or unperformed. The result is a multi-faceted panorama of British symphonism, offering many insights into the composers’ thinking and their socio-cultural contexts. A comprehensive catalogue of all known works and an extensive bibliography invite readers to delve further into the subject.

Book excerpt: Musical Symbolism in the Operas of Debussy and Bartók explores the means by which two early 20th century operas - Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande (1902) and Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle (1911) - transformed the harmonic structures of the traditional major/minor scale system into a new musical language. It also looks at how this language reflects the psychodramatic symbolism of the Franco-Belgian poet, Maurice Maeterlinck, and his Hungarian disciple, Béla Balázs. These two operas represent the first significant attempts to establish more profound correspondences between the symbolist dramatic conception and the new musical language. Duke Bluebeard's Castle is based almost exclusively on interactions between pentatonic/diatonic folk modalities and their more abstract symmetrical transformations (including whole-tone, octatonic, and other pitch constructions derived from the system of the interval cycles). The opposition of these two harmonic extremes serve as the basis for dramatic polarity between the characters as real-life beings and as instruments of fate. The book also explores the new musico-dramatic relations within their larger historical, social psychological, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts.
