Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of Christianity For those who desire to study the subject Of these lectures in greater detail, I recommend especially the works on Church history by Baur and Hase. They are mutually complementary. The former is remarkable for his large and spirited interpretation Of the main ideas Of that epoch, Of the fundamental thoughts of the great teachers and heroic leaders as well as Of the teleological connection in the en tire development. The latter is masterly in the Wealth Of detail, the art of vivid narration and the nice, intelligent characterization Of the actors in their relation to their environment. The two writ ers have in common great Objectivity in the treat ment Of the material; they have the ability to trans pose themselves without prejudice into times past and persons distant and foreign, as well as to judge them justly on the basis of the conditions Of their own day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, Paul Johnson’s exceptional study of Christianity has been loved and widely hailed for its intensive research, writing, and magnitude—“a tour de force, one of the most ambitious surveys of the history of Christianity ever attempted and perhaps the most radical” (New York Review of Books). In a highly readable companion to books on faith and history, the scholar and author Johnson has illuminated the Christian world and its fascinating history in a way that no other has. Johnson takes off in the year AD 49 with his namesake the apostle Paul. Thus beginning an ambitious quest to paint the centuries since the founding of a little-known ‘Jesus Sect’, A History of Christianity explores to a great degree the evolution of the Western world. With an unbiased and overall optimistic tone, Johnson traces the fantastic scope of the consequent sects of Christianity and the people who followed them. Information drawn from extensive and varied sources from around the world makes this history as credible as it is reliable. Invaluable understanding of the framework of modern Christianity—and its trials and tribulations throughout history—has never before been contained in such a captivating work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in History: A Study of Religious Development Ours is in fact an attempt to set forth the genesis and growth of certain of the more typical forms and phases which Christianity - whether as conduct, piety, thought, or organised Church life - has assumed under the conditioning influences first of the Roman Empire and then of the Western civilisation that was its successor and heir. Thus, of books known to us, Professor Percy Gardner's Growth of Christianity is most akin to ours. Yet, apart from its larger scale, ours differs from his a good deal in scope and execution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? Book The History of the Origins of Christianity Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of the Origins of Christianity Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Ernest Renan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity, Vol. 3 The fifteen or sixteen years of religious history comprised in this volume in'the embryonic age of Christianity, are the years with which we are best acquainted. Jesus and the primitive Church at Jerusalem re semble the images of a far-off paradise, lost in a mysterious mist. On the other hand, the arrival of St Paul at Rome, in consequence of the step the Author of the Acts has taken in closing at that juncture his narrative, marks in the history of Christian origins the commencement of a profound darkness into which the bloody glare of the barbarous feasts of Nero, and the thunders of the Apocalypse, cast only a few gleams. In particular, the death of the Apostles is enveloped in an impenetrable obscurity. On the contrary, the era of the missions of St Paul, especially of the second mission and the third, is known to us through documents of the greatest value. The Acts, till then so legendary, become suddenly quite authentic; the last chapters, com. Posed in part of the narrative of an eye-witness, are the sole complete historical writings which we have of the early times of Christianity. In fine, those years, through a privilege very rare in similar circum stances, provide us with documents, the dates of which are absolutely authentic, and a series of letters, the most important of which have withstood all the tests of criticism, and which have never been sub jected to interpolations. In the introduction to the preceding volume, we have made an ex amination of the Book of Acts. We must now discuss seriatim the different epistles which bear the name of St Paul. The Apostle informs us himself, that even during his lifetime there were in circulation in his name several spurious letters, and he often took precautions to prevent frauds. We are, therefore, only carrying out his intentions in subject ing the writings which have been put forth as his to a rigorous censorship. Book Christian History in Its Three Great Periods Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian History in Its Three Great Periods Hese volumes, of which the first was originally published under the title Fragments of Chris tian History, were prepared in the regular course of duty in the department of Ecclesiastical History in Harvard University. Taken together, the two em brace the entire development of Catholic Christianity, coming down to the eve of the Reformation. Their plan requires for its completion a third volume, te viewing certain modern phases of religious life and thought, which is now in preparation. The series thus contains a general view, or outline, of the course of study indicated in the Introduction, which I have attempted to fill out in the University lecture-courses. Taken in connection with Hebrew Men and Times, which serves as preface, and Our Liberal Movement in Theology, which serves as sequel, it gives a simi lar outline of the great religious tradition that has come down to our own time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Christianity The little book herewith given to the public is based upon the "Kircheugeschichte im Grundriss," by Professor Rudolph Sohm, professor of jurisprudence in the University of Leipzig, the many excellencies of which are enhanced by the fact that here Church history is written from the stand-point of a lawyer. The aim has been to preserve every thing of value to the American reader which the original work contains, and to add much which it omits or barely mentions. Thus 17, 18, 37, 38, 39, 53, 54, 55, 56, are all additional, as also the supplementary and explanatory notes, and the chronological tables. In the translated portions, omissions and additions were made, and statements of opinion altered whenever it was deemed necessary. The book in its English form, therefore, is practically an independent work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited View of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and History Of the human spirit. Observe that we pos tulate mere curiosity and interest in human nature, as a phenomenon, we postulate no sym pathy or interest in religious belief as such. For the Martian as described is a being for whom religion is an impossibility and the Christian ideal a subject for laughter. He would natur ally pass by our churches, ignore our religious books and newspapers, and regard the denuncia tion of the advancing tide of infidelity by Bishops and Archdeacons, as a proof that the terrestrials are only still at the lowest rung of the ladder, scaled already by the inhabitants of Mars. Yet none the less such a being could not be long upon earth, before he would be driven to the conclusion that if he desired to understand the civilization of Europe and America, to enter into the meaning of its poli tics, its literature, its art, and even to appreciate its political geography, there was one subject of which he must strive to make himself a master - the history of Christianity, of the manifold forms which it has assumed, of the strange spell cast by it upon the most practical of the races upon earth, and the still stranger reactions which it has exercised upon politics and culture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Christianity, Vol. 1 You cannot understand the history of the first centuries of Christianity, the phases through which it passed, the heresies which sprang up around it, the changes which 1t underwent, unless you first make yourself acquainted with the anterior or contemporaneous doctrines and religions. Nothing is insulated in the destinies of our race it is by the past that the present is explained and the future un veiled. Most Of the ancient forms of worship seem to be derived from a common origin. You find in that common origin, with some slight exceptions, the same theogonies, the same cosmogonies, the same religious institutions. Mosaism, although distinguished from the rest by the purity Of its conceptions, nevertheless took from them divers ceremonies and ordinances. In the last ages preceding the Christian era the Israelites, brought into contact with other nations by the captivity and by voluntary dispersion, adopted, under the influence of traditions and commentaries of old unknown, opinions which their sacred books do not contain, or at least do not declare in an explicit manner. Christianity in its turn coming, in its earliest days, forth from J udea to establish itself in the midst of polytheistic populations, failed to keep itself free from the influence of that medium, in the degree in which it Spread abroad it borrowed more or less according to the position of each Church or each group of Churches, from their philosophy, their rites, their superstitions.
