Book The Development of American Labor Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Development of American Labor Classic Reprint written by Albert A. Blum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development of American Labor Labor was not alone in searching for a path to follow. The industrial revolution had brought forth great opportunities for progress - more production, more profit, more work. It also carried in its wake frequent loss of skills, monotony of mass production, long hours of toil, dismal working conditions, and the stench of industrial slums. The farm had had horrible conditions too but not in such concentrated doses. What to do perplexed many sensitive individuals early in the nineteenth century as in the years following. Must poverty go hand in hand with progress? To some, the answer was in the affirmative. To many members of the laissez faire school of economics, it was a dismal but nonetheless clear fact that there was only a fixed amount of money available for wages for workers; to give them more would only permit them to'propagate more, which in turn would inevitably create greater pressure on the already limited amount of funds available. Consequently, one would only pay them enough to subsist. Other members Of the laissez-faire school of economics painted a more optimistic picture of the lot of the worker - that the law of supply and demand working freely in the market place would, in the long run, all other things being equal, help the worker. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, this approach took on a Darwinian flavor. The Social Darwinists, as this group was called, argued that the best rise to the top and that the dregs settle on the bottom. Therefore, do not help those at the bottom. If they are good, they will rise. If not, they are getting what they deserve. DO not send to know for whom the bell tolls, preached the Social Darwinist. It tolled for whom it Should. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History, of the American Labor Movement This little book is intended as a brief and simple story of the labor movement in the United States from the day of independence to the present time. Although there are many special studies, including the great treatise by John R. Commons and his As sociates, there is no single, comprehensive volume of moderate size for the busy citizen. It seems hardly necessary to dwell upon the importance of more exact and more widespread knowledge of the his tory, aims and methods of labor organizations in this country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organized Self-Help: A History and Defence of the American Labor Movement This little book is especially designed to prevent such deadlocks, by removing the prejudices which stand in the way of arbitration, and by presenting in general terms the workers' side of the question. Book The American Labor Year Book Vol 5

Download or read book The American Labor Year Book Vol 5 written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Labor Year Book, Vol. 5: 1923-1924 With this, its fifth issue, the American Labor Year Book enters upon what is hoped to be a period of yearly, instead of two-yearly, publication. The importance to the American labor movement of such an annual can hardly be over-estimated. For an understanding of the present eventful period of world history, close knowledge of the labor movement, its daily struggles, its victories and its defeats, its shortcomings and its aspirations, is indispensable. Such close knowledge, accurate, objective, and concise, the American Labor Year Book aims to present. Appearing as closely as possible after the end of the calendar year, each volume will prove a useful record of the twelvemonth's activities. Important changes have been made in the present volume as compared with earlier issues. The entire subject matter has been reorganized, and arranged with a view to more consecutive and logical presentation. For the first time, also, instead of being a collection of articles by specialists in the various fields, the material has been written up practically in its entirety by the Research Department staff. The gain in completeness and in unity of point of view will, it is believed, be obvious. New features are a calendar of Labor Conventions in 1924, an International Labor Diary for the preceding two years, discussion of Workers' Education and Labor Banking, and a comprehensive Directory - perhaps the first to be issued in this country - of trade unions, labor political parties, workers' educational institutions, cooperatives, and labor papers and magazines in America and abroad. A volume such as this must of necessity be a cooperative effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book American Federation of Labor

Download or read book American Federation of Labor written by American Federation of Labor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Federation of Labor: History, Encyclopedia, Reference Book But such a living, breathing organization as the American Federation of Labor needs more than a Year Book. It was believed the membership would welcome a publication that would give in as concise form as possible' every important proposition acted on by all the conventions. To that end the many questions considered in the thirty-eight sessions of the Federation have been compiled and published in encyclopedia form. This has developed a ready reference book that will be of greatest assistance not only to the officers and members but to all who seek to know the principles upon which our trade union movement is founded and the wonderful successes achieved. Those who desire information in detail can readily refer to the proceedings, as the work is also a bibliography. While each subject is briefly treated the intention has been not to omit anything that would prevent a thorough understanding of every principle. When it is known there are words in the thirty-eight proceedings. That had to be reduced to about it will be seen the work has been dif ficult. The rule followed was to use the official language of the conventions. The belief was that it should be an American Federation of Labor book, not the work of any individual or group of individuals. The real authors are the delegates to conventions, extracts from whose resolutions and speeches. Are printed literally but in condensed form. It is the American Federation of Labor officially talking to you as you read, not an individual author Every delegate who presented a proposition, discussed any issue or in any way left the impress of his thoughts on the trade union movement will recognize the result of his work in the book. Only the names are omitted, making all the delegates equally responsible for the magnificent growth and victories gained by the labor movement. Many brilliant orations have been made in the conventions and official reports of marvelous literary merit and economic value have been presented. Book An Introduction to the Study of Organized Labor in America Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Organized Labor in America The historical background has been left without revision. The other parts have been condensed in many places in order to add the newer material while many chapters, especially in Parts, II, III, and V, have been quite entirely rewritten. It is the author's belief that the study now presents an interpretation that is reliable and representative Of current developments. The effects of the war period and the post-war period have been important, but the essence of the movement has been changed far less in America than elsewhere, and because of this the task of revision has been much simpler than it otherwise might have been. Book The Workers in American History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Workers in American History Classic Reprint written by James Oneal and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Workers in American History In 1910 I wrote a small book of 136 pages bearing the title of this one and two editions were exhausted the following year. This booklet was devoted to the colonial and revolutionary period of American history, concluding with a short summary chapter. In the meantime I had received many letters urging that in the next edition I should attempt to cover the period following the revolution. This I did by adding another chapter to the third and much larger edition which appeared in 1912. This edition was nearly exhausted late in 1914 and in the meantime lecturing and traveling did not permit me to further enlarge the book, as I was conscious of its limitations even with the added chapter on the post-revolutionary period. Then the world war brought with it soaring costs of publication and I was compelled to abandon any thought of another edition until its close. This revised and fourth edition contains two additional chapters dealing with the modern period since the Civil War. Most of the preceding chapters remain as they were in the third edition, except for the correction of some minor errors of statement that had crept into the text and some abbreviations which, in making, have not made necessary the omission of any important fact or conclusion that appear in the last edition. While the book is now a fairly complete survey of the workers in American history from settlement times down to a recent period, I am still deeply conscious of its imperfections. Book The American Labor Year Book 1926 Vol 7 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Labor Year Book, 1926, Vol. 7 Redoubled effort has been made, in preparing this issue of the american labor year book, to turn out a volume of practical usefulness to the practical worker in the trade union and labor political ranks. Into the following pages has been packed as much as possible of the information which the worker needs in his trade union meeting, in noon-hour discussions with his fellow-workingmen, or on the stand for his political party, to back up his arguments and drive home his points. In wage negotiations, laying out union tactics, or shaping political programs, knowledge of the facts of industry and of what the other branches Of the labor movement are doing is essential. To search through the multitude of Official reports and books on any industrial subject - or even to discover what books and reports exist on it - is Often beyond the limited time and energy Of the worker. To condense into useable size, and to interpret accurately the information gathered, may be beyond the limited experience of one not accustomed to handling statistics. Itis to meet the needs of this situation that the american labor year book is written. The first section, on Industrial and Labor Conditions, has been nearly doubled in size. Here will be found, in easily understood form, figures on industrial production corporation profits, new mergers and trusts, the workers share in the product Of industry, the trend Of wages, hours, unemployment, child labor, and related subjects, collected from widely scattered sources. Probably no equal number of pages anywhere else will give so clear a picture of the conditions which today confront the mass of American workers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Labor Year Book, Vol. 3: 1919-1920 The largest portion of the material for the present volume of the American Labor Year Book, - the third since its inaugura tion, - was almost ready for the printers in the Summer of 1919, when a New York State Legislative Committee made an illegal and unwarranted search of the premises of the Rand School of Social Science, removing from the files and desks of the Department 'of Labor Research, reports of government bureaus, labor and kindred organizations, and various foreign publications, collected in the course of preparation of the material for the Year Book. The objects of the raiders were frustrated in the courts but a sufficient amount of annoyance and inconvenience was created by them. The editor was forced to postpone the date of publi cation, pending the replacement Oi the removed material and the preparation of new articles. When the losses were repaired, the strike of the New York printing pressmen occurred, which further delayed the publication of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Labor: Its Great Wrongs, and How It Can Redress Them, and Obtain for Itself Great and Lasting Prosperity, Restore Harmony to the Country, and Purity to the Government This little work is written in behalf of the rights and interests of labor; just as we conceive those rights and interests to exist, without any mental'reservation or secret evasion whatever. All persons in the United States, whose interests are identified or joined with the interests of labor, have great interest in this book, or at least in its sub jcet matter. This includes farmers, mechanics, and artisans of all kinds, miners, women, men, girls and boys, who work for hire at all useful employments; also merchants, traders and professional men, and every other person in community, except where any of the persons above referred to have some greater interest, adverse to the interests of labor. The exceptions are comparatively few. The great majority, say nineteen twentieths, probably thirty-nine fortieths, have a preponderance of interests on the side of labor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Labor and the War Thus burdened with work - work which he loved because it was work for the common cause of human ity - he was 'of necessity also the voice of the cause for which he worked. America has known no firmer voice in the trying months that have passed. It has been a voice for democracy, a voice for freedom, and a voice stem and harsh in combating those insidious forces of pacifism and pro-germanism that cropped up here and there in our midst as we struggled against the common enemy. There are collected in this volume the principal ad dresses delivered by Mr. Gompers during the period of the great war, including the address delivered in the Chicago Auditorium before a magnificent audi ence representative of the whole nation upon his re turn from his remarkably successful tour of the Al lied nations as chairman of an American Federation of Labor mission.
