Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of protection schemes used for power transformers and describes the internal fault conditions and external abnormalities that may disrupt the operation of a power transformer. It also highlights the issues of current protective schemes, which pose several challenges in terms of the detection of internal faults and abnormalities, including computational burden, reduced accuracy, difficulty to implement, increased cost, computational complexity, impermeability to high resistance faults (HRF), and malfunction in conditions like cross-country fault. To address these problems, the book develops an effective novel transformer protection scheme that can eliminate all the said difficulties using an innovative algorithm. Given its scope, it is a useful resource for researchers and practitioners working in the field of power system protection, allowing them to design novel protection schemes, and providing insights into the hardware validation of developed technique.

Book Design of High power High frequency Coreless Transformer Systems

Download or read book Design of High power High frequency Coreless Transformer Systems written by Daniel Ervin Schemmel and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis concerns advances in the design of coreless power transformers as well as associated power electronics, which can also add extra functionality. Compared to traditional core-based transformers that require large, heavy and costly magnetic cores to guide magnetic flux between windings, the coreless power transformer employs extra resonant coils to provide near perfect magnetic coupling between input and output windings. The four-coil implementation of a high-frequency coreless power transformer was recently introduced along with basic analysis and a 100 W working demonstration device. While the development of this new coreless transformer was a significant achievement, a number of issues remain for it to be practical in electric grid applications. A key topic addressed is a means to optimize the design as well as establishing a universal metric that quantifies coreless transformer performance. Other topics include the integration of the transformer as a component of a larger system through the development of required power electronics to drive the transformer and magnetic shielding to provide control of external magnetic fields. The overall objective of this thesis is to provide guidance on the design of coreless transformer systems and to extend coreless transformer technology to higher powers. More specifically, through the design and construction of different four-coil coreless transformers, topics associated with the system level design of coreless transformers are addressed in the context of DC-to-DC systems. This includes the design, construction, and testing of three transformers with ratings of 1 kW at 150 kHz, 1 kW at 300 kHz, and 40 kW at 300 kHz. Efficiencies of these transformers ranged from about 93% to over 98%. A new design algorithm based on particle swarm optimization is applied to optimize the required 21 parameters in the transformer design space. An important metric for the optimization process is shown to be the transformer S21 scattering parameter. This work also includes implementation of a suitable H-bridge inverter with zero-voltage switching and full-bridge rectification to produce a DC output. In addition, topics such as compensation, magnetic shielding, and transformer stacking with synchronization are presented in detail.

Book Modeling and Protection of Phase Shifting Transformers

Download or read book Modeling and Protection of Phase Shifting Transformers written by Umar Naseem Khan and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is mainly focused on the development of (i) phase shifting transformers (PSTs) mathematical and simulation models that can be used for the short-circuit and protection studies, and (ii) new phase shifting transformers protection methods that provide more secure and sensitive solutions than the standard current differential protection. The first part of this thesis describes and presents the modeling of the single-core standard-delta, and two-core symmetrical and asymmetrical PST for protection and short-circuit studies. The models already available for such types of PSTs have limitations and require detailed test report data from the manufacturers. However, winding test data at each tap position is seldom available from the manufacturers. Moreover, they are confined to the balanced system conditions. The proposed modeling approach is based on the development of positive, negative and zero-sequence networks. Derived mathematical relations are further used to develop the relations of winding terminal voltages, currents and impedances as a function of tap position. Accuracy of the presented models is verified mathematically with the manufacturer's test report data. Furthermore, electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) modeling, in commercially available simulation tools such as PSCAD/EMTDC and RTDS, is done in order to further verify the proposed models. The proposed modeling approach does not rely on the availability of the manufacturer test report data and only requires the nameplate information. It can also be used for both balanced and unbalanced system conditions. The second part of the thesis presents two protection principles: (a) electromagnetic differential protection, and (b) directional comparison-based protection. The main motive behind the development of new protection principles is to develop a solution that is more secure, sensitive and offers high-speed protection. Correct implementation of these techniques for the protection of various kinds of PSTs comes across various problems and hence leads us to the proposed solution of those issues. Both techniques solve the problems of conventional challenges such as magnetizing inrush current, core saturation, non-standard phase shift, external fault with current transformer (CT) saturation, etc. The electromagnetic differential protection principle can only be applied to the PST it represents and it requires tap position tracking. A directional comparison-based approach can be applied to any kind of PST without tracking the tap position.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 26 (thesis year 1981) a total of 11 ,048 theses titles from 24 Canadian and 21 8 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 26 reports theses submitted in 1981, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Electrical Power System Protection

Download or read book Electrical Power System Protection written by C. Christopoulos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-06-30 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The death of Professor Arthur Wright in the summer of 1996 deprived me of a friend and a colleague whose judgement and experience shaped this book. I pay tribute to his contributions to protection and electrical engineering education. In the five years since the first edition appeared, many developments have taken place and it is now necessary to update the book. The use of digital communications and advanced signal processing techniques is now widespread and several fully numeric relays are available from manu facturers. Two new Chapters 13 and 14 have been added to introduce readers to these concepts and associated techniques. Artificial intelligence is making its impact in all engineering applications and power system protection is no exception. Expert systems, fuzzy logic, artificial neural networks, adaptive and integrated protection, synchronized measurements using the global positioning system, genetic algorithms, flexible a.c. transmission systems, are some of the techniques considered in connection with protection. Although many of these techniques have not yet found major application in protection, it is nevertheless essential for the educated protection engineer to have a basic understanding of the underlying principles and methodology so that he, or she, can evaluate their suitability for new relaying problems and applications. Chapter 15 was therefore added to guide readers through this developing area. I have also added some new material in other chapters to reflect changes over the past years.

Book Advancement in Power Transformer Infrastructure and Digital Protection

Download or read book Advancement in Power Transformer Infrastructure and Digital Protection written by Nilesh Chothani and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of a power transformer infrastructure and comprehensive digital protection of it. It presents various protective methodologies available to protect the transformer from disturbances by taking care of mal-operation due to external disturbances and providing fine protection to the transformer. Though there are many protection methodologies available in the practice. However, these existing methodologies may mal-operate during external disturbances such as inrush, over-fluxing and short circuits. Hence, further research is needed in addition to the existing methods of protection in terms of more fault prediction accuracy, speedy operation, and lower protection cost with zero error in the detection of faults. The book will be useful reference for practitioners from academia and industrial applications. .
