Book excerpt: The last 25 years have witnessed extraordinary growth in the academic specialization variously described as composition studies or rhetoric and composition. What was noticeable about the field in its infancy was a preoccupation with practice, a lack of emphasis on theory, and an exclusive reliance on the writing process. As its disciplinary status has grown, the field has become far more theoretical. Composition studies has expanded its focus, reconceptualized the writing process, and embraced a wide range of critical perspectives. The result of this change is that terms such as poststructuralism, social construction, gender, and genre, which were largely unknown in 1965, now dominate discussion. This reference book is a guide to the multiplicity of theories that have emerged to form the disciplinary foundation of composition studies. The volume consists of 66 entries, each of which is written by an expert contributor and focuses on a particular theory or group of theories. While the entries show how various individuals have contributed to theoretical movements, very few concentrate on the work of a single theorist. Each entry first provides a critical summary of a particular theory or group of theories, including key elements, basic concepts and claims, and information about seminal or particularly influential works. It then reviews the theory's critical reception in composition studies and discusses its significance in the field. The bibliography at the end of each entry lists primary texts and major scholarship related to the theory and provides additional suggestions for further reading. The volume closes with a selected bibliography of important works.

Book excerpt: This book represents the emerging efforts of a growing international network of researchers and practitioners to promote the development and uptake of evidence-based pedagogies in higher education, at something a level approaching large-scale impact. By offering a communication venue that attracts and enhances much needed partnerships among practitioners and researchers in pedagogical innovation, we aim to change the conversation and focus on how we work and learn together – i.e. extending the implementation and knowledge of co–design methods. In this first edition of our Research Topic on Active Learning, we highlight two (of the three) types of publications we wish to promote. First are studies aimed at understanding the pedagogical designs developed by practitioners in their own practices by bringing to bear the theoretical lenses developed and tested in the education research community. These types of studies constitute the "practice pull" that we see as a necessary counterbalance to "knowledge push" in a more productive pedagogical innovation ecosystem based on research-practitioner partnerships. Second are studies empirically examining the implementations of evidence-based designs in naturalistic settings and under naturalistic conditions. Interestingly, the teams conducting these studies are already exemplars of partnerships between researchers and practitioners who are uniquely positioned as “in-betweens” straddling the two worlds. As a result, these publications represent both the rigours of research and the pragmatism of reflective practice. In forthcoming editions, we will add to this collection a third type of publication -- design profiles. These will present practitioner-developed pedagogical designs at varying levels of abstraction to be held to scrutiny amongst practitioners, instructional designers and researchers alike. We hope by bringing these types of studies together in an open access format that we may contribute to the development of new forms of practitioner-researcher interactions that promote co-design in pedagogical innovation.

The 1992 volume lists and annotates 1,656 articles, books, dissertations, and papers that, with few exceptions, were published during the 1992 calendar year. A group of 149 contributing bibliographers prepared the citations and annotations for the entries appearing in this volume. The CCCC Bibliography includes an index of authors and editors, a subject index, and entries cross-referenced according to subject matter. Considerably more comprehensive than other bibliographies in composition studies, the CCCC Bibliography of Composition and Rhetoric draws upon a large group of experts in the field to aid teachers and researchers in sorting through a vast body of interdisciplinary material, making their work easier and more effective. Further, the range of texts represented in the CCCC Bibliography has been expanded to include a greater number of entries dealing with feminism, critical theory, technology, and cultural studies as they relate to composition and rhetoric. Each document is cited and annotated only once under one of the five major sections of the CCCC Bibliography. Each entry, however, receives an "entry number" so that cross-references to other sections are possible. This feature is especially useful because much scholarship in composition and rhetoric is interdisciplinary in nature. Cross-references appear as a listing of entry numbers, preceded by "See also," found at the ends of subsections. Entries appear under five major categories: bibliographies and checklists; theory and research; teacher education, administration, and social roles; curriculum; and testing, measurement, and evaluation. Although the CCCC Bibliography excludes master's theses, textbooks, computer software, and book reviews from its coverage, it furnishes citations to review essays, articles appearing in some 228 journals, scholarly monographs and essay collections, dissertations abstracted in Dissertation Abstracts International, and selected documents and conference materials available through ERIC.

For some time, neurolinguistic research on syntax was heavily influenced by theoretical linguistic approaches, which characterize in detail the nature of syntactic representations. A rough consensus has been that the primary region supporting syntax is Broca’s area, and that syntactic deficits in aphasia exist primarily due to damage or degeneration of this region, commonly occurring in Broca’s aphasia and nonfluent/agrammatic PPA. With respect to temporal dynamics of syntactic processing, neurophysiological research on syntax focused on specific event-related potentials such as the ELAN and P600, thought to index phrase structure building and syntactic reanalyses. However, the research landscape has changed substantially in the last several years with new methodologies and theoretical perspectives, and there is little consensus on the neurobiological foundations of syntax or the role of linguistic theory in guiding research. The goal of this Research Topic is to reassess our understanding of syntax and the brain in light of these developments. Specifically, it is designed to address the following set of major questions:
