The perceived deficiencies of the theoretical and practical management methods were identified and discussed. The role of the mining industry as one of the major contributors to employment, wealth creation, national gross product and national development was discussed. Existing and future challenges were highlighted. A motivation why the existing available theoretical management practices being utilised were inadequate to enable management to manage comprehensively was identified. The management practices utilised or still being utilised in the South African mining industry were investigated and evaluated. The Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency, as a legally compulsory suitable qualification for a manager to be appointed as a competent person to manage a mine, part of it or works, was also investigated and evaluated. The ideal management method should, at all times, provide in all the present and future theoretical and practical management needs of the total labour force on all the levels of the organisation. It should enable management to efficiently cope with the demands of rapid change and the efficient management of the future. It should ensure that all activities necessary for the efficient functioning of the organisation are totally integrated and coordinated. This management method should facilitate the optimisation of the collective skills, loyalty and dedication of all the employees on all the levels of the organisation. It should primarily optimise the desired planned results. Such a management method could not be ascertained from the literature and practice. It was concluded that the South African mining industry is in dire need of a comprehensive, practical and integrated management method that would, at all times, provide in all the present and future theoretical and practical management needs of the total labour force on all the levels of the organisation. A sustainable, comprehensive, practical and integrated management theory and an implementation procedure, suitable to apply the management theory equally efficiently on all the levels of the organisation, was developed, discussed and proposed in this thesis.

Book excerpt: The King Report III on Corporate Governance, 2009 was incorporated into the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listing requirements, which meant all JSE listed companies must comply with specific corporate governance practices and disclosures and meet compliance standards in their annual reports. The implementation of mandatory compliance requirements means that South Africa is leading the way by being one of the first country¿̐ưs to fully implement mandatory integrated reporting. The global recession of 2009 saw the need for a new form of corporate reporting that moved away from the traditional accounting and reporting methods, as their failures contributed to the financial crisis. The International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) was formed in 2010 to assist the framework of corporate reporting. The IIRC emphasised the need for reporting that would cultivate a corporate reporting environment that will focus on short, medium and long 0́3 term value creation. Integrated reporting seeks to achieve concise communication about how the organisation¿̐ưs strategy, governance and performance issues, in the context of its external environment that leads to the creation of value the short, medium, and long term. The South African mining industry contributes significantly to the local economy and remains one of the world¿̐ưs biggest mineral producer. Mining, is seen as integral part of local society as it impacts various sectors and industries, whilst managing investors and stakeholder expectations simultaneously. The need for greater transparency and reporting methods on social, financial issues is important especially where an industry, like mining, impacts all three issues. Since the mandatory implementation of integrated reporting, JSE listed companies have not seen immediate success with integrated reporting, it has been understood that it shall take time to comply and integrated the requirements and to remedy shortcomings. The mining industry is not only complaint with local reporting standards but also international best practice standards, the question that is raised is, whether the disclosure principles are being correctly applied to reporting in the South African mining sector? The need for cohesive, concise reporting is important, and as to whether the South African mining industry utilises all aspects of the integrated reporting principles, to its full potential, still remains to be seen. There are shortcomings and gaps that still need to be addressed, but there remains room for improvement and change. This paper will discuss the current state of integrated reporting in the mining industry and whether the implementation of integrated reporting is effective, and a further investigation on the failures, gaps and shortcomings that are faced within integrated reporting related to South African mining industry. This analysis of the following areas will provide information to whether integrated reporting is being utilised to its full potential by analysing the King Report IV on Corporate Governance, 2016 and the IIRC framework respectively.

Mine closures present a major challenge to the mining industry and governments, with this being particularly noticeable in the Global South. This book argues that the dependencies created by the mining industry and mine housing policies while a mine is operational cause serious societal problems when it closes. To demonstrate this, the book applies the concepts of place attachment, asset-based development and social disruption. Conceptually, the book challenges the view that place attachment and asset-based development are the most appropriate and often the only policy responses in mining areas. In South Africa, the mining industry and the government have created comprehensive housing programmes linked to homeownership to promote place attachment, stability and wealth among mine workers. These programmes do not consider the disruption that mine closure might bring. The book challenges the blind application, during boom periods, of policies which create long-term dependencies that are difficult to manage when a mine closes. In mineral resource-rich Africa, this has emerged as one of the most daunting challenges of our time. South Africa has been bold in its approach to mitigating this problem, although the challenge is multi-faceted. On a positive note, substantial research has been conducted to confront the challenge. However, thus far, the research has been largely fragmented. This book builds on the work that has been done, but also provides a refreshing multi-disciplinary approach that is useful in addressing the AMD challenges that South Africa and the continent face. Whilst addressing the problem as a scientific and engineering challenge, the book also exposes the economic, policy and legal challenges involved in addressing the problem. The book concludes, quite uniquely, that AMD is an opportunity that can be used by South Africa and Africa to solve problems, such as acute water shortage, as well as mineral recovery operations.
