Book The U S Navy Healthy Back Program Effect on Back Knowledge Among Recruits

Download or read book The U S Navy Healthy Back Program Effect on Back Knowledge Among Recruits written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To address the high prevalence and costs associated with low back pain, U.S. Navy physical therapists currently provide back injury prevention education to requesting commands in the form of the Healthy Back Program. Although the content of the Healthy Back Program has face validity, no explicit evaluation of its effectiveness has been conducted. Because of the need to develop effective health interventions, a formal study is needed. The primary purposes of the present study are to: (a) present findings examining the immediate effect of the Healthy Back Program in changing knowledge about back injury prevention, and (b) provide a baseline assessment of back problems among incoming recruits. Correlates of back pain also are examined to suggest factors that may be amenable to intervention. Intervention recruits (n=1,772) received the Healthy Back Program brief, which is a slide presentation that focuses largely on information about back injury and prevention techniques. Immediately following the presentation, intervention subjects completed a short questionnaire assessing their history of back problems, demographic and health information, back knowledge, and nutrition knowledge. Control subjects (n=1,658) completed identical questionnaires but received no presentation. Intervention recruits had a significantly higher back knowledge score (67% correct) than controls (50% correct); nutrition knowledge differences were minimal (52% vs. 53% correct). About 41% of all recruits had ever experienced a back problem, 27% reported at least one back problem within the past year, and 11% reported back pain during recruit training. Liftlng, sports participation, and bending were reported as the leading causes of previous back problems. Although better self-reported health and fitness measures were associated with fewer low back problems, other correlates of back pain reported elsewhere (e.g., smoking, overweight) were not found.

This book was released on 1999-01-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Injuries are the leading cause of death and disability among people under age 35 in the United States. Despite great strides in injury prevention over the decades, injuries result in 150,000 deaths, 2.6 million hospitalizations, and 36 million visits to the emergency room each year. Reducing the Burden of Injury describes the cost and magnitude of the injury problem in America and looks critically at the current response by the public and private sectors, including: Data and surveillance needs. Research priorities. Trauma care systems development. Infrastructure support, including training for injury professionals. Firearm safety. Coordination among federal agencies. The authors define the field of injury and establish boundaries for the field regarding intentional injuries. This book highlights the crosscutting nature of the injury field, identifies opportunities to leverage resources and expertise of the numerous parties involved, and discusses issues regarding leadership at the federal level.

Book Back Injury Prevention Leader s Safety Guide

Download or read book Back Injury Prevention Leader s Safety Guide written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is another in a series of Safety Guides for installation commanders, leaders, and workplace supervisors to help them protect their work forces against accidental losses. The focus here is one of the most common and most costly workplace injuries -- back injury. Applying the methods outlined in this booklet will help leaders mount effective back-injury-prevention programs. It contains ideas developed throughout the Army during the early phases of our back-emphasis effort. New approaches include added emphasis on ergonomics and contributions from a broader spectrum of Army health are professionals. Learning from earlier loss control successes, we know the Army's back-injury-prevention campaign must be a shared task. It can succeed only through coordinated staff action. Like all important leadership responsibilities, elimination of back-related losses is a "Commander's Program. But commanders lead, they do not administer. Keeping a lid on back-injury costs demands a lot of attention to detail from first-line supervisors and help from the installation's staff specialists. Chronic dollar losses are so great that their reduction will easily return the cost of control. The ideas and management tools in this pamphlet will help installation officials develop their own unique programs. While effective prevention of back injuries is required by Army and Federal regulations, no single approach is mandated. But most workplaces have room for improvement. Their leaders can profit from the prevention and care strategies outlined in this guide.
