Book Development of Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Alloys for Aerospace Applications

Download or read book Development of Aluminum Powder Metallurgy Alloys for Aerospace Applications written by Allison Sueyi Chua and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Currently, there is a high demand for lightweight aerospace materials, driven by the desire to provide enhanced fuel efficiency by reducing vehicular weight. Aluminum alloys are attractive due to their excellent mechanical properties and high strength to weight ratios. Powder metallurgy (PM), which converts metal powder into a high performance product, presents an alternative to traditional forming techniques, which are often unable to provide adequate dimensional tolerances. The challenge is to determine if aluminum PM alloys and technologies can be successfully employed within aerospace applications. This research focuses on the PM processing technologies (die compaction, cold isostatic pressing (CIP), and spark plasma sintering (SPS)) of two alloys, PM2024 and PM7075. Processing parameters were assessed using attributes such as density, hardness, and tensile properties. Both powders showed comparable densities and tensile properties to their wrought equivalents. Ultimately, the groundwork was laid for future research into these alloys and their processing methods.

Book Aluminium Alloys

Download or read book Aluminium Alloys written by Subbarayan Sivasankaran and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major issue of energy saving and conservation of the environment in the world is being emphasized to us to concentrate on lightweight materials in which aluminium alloys are contributing more in applications in the twenty-first century. Aluminium and its related materials possess lighter weight, considerable strength, more corrosion resistance and ductility. Especially from the past one decade, the use of aluminium alloys is increasing in construction field, transportation industries, packaging purposes, automotive, defence, aircraft and electrical sectors. Around 85% is being used in the form of wrought products, which replace the use of cast iron. Further, the major features of aluminium alloy are recyclability and its abundant availability in the world. In general, aluminium and its related materials are being processed via casting, drawing, forging, rolling, extrusion, welding, powder metallurgy process, etc. To improve the physical and mechanical properties, scientists are doing more research and adding some second-phase particles in to it called composites in addition to heat treatment. Therefore, to explore more in this field, the present book has been aimed and focused to bridge all scientists who are working in this field. The main objective of the present book is to focus on aluminium, its alloys and its composites, which include, but are not limited to, the various processing routes and characterization techniques in both macro- and nano-levels.

Book High Performance Powder Metallurgy Aluminum Alloys an Overview

Download or read book High Performance Powder Metallurgy Aluminum Alloys an Overview written by M. J. Koczak and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historic development of aluminum powder metallurgy dates back to the early 1900's with initial flake powder production and has matured to the present day production of viable aerospace alloys. Primary powder production and processing techniques, such as atomization and mechanical alloying are reviewed. Processing-microstructure-property relationships in four classes of high performance powder metallurgy (P/M) aluminum alloys are considered. These are (Aluminum-Iron-Cobalt, Aluminum-Iron-Nickel) high strength alloys (Aluminum-Zinc-Magnesium, copper-cobalt); high specific modulus alloys (Aluminum-Lithium-Copper); high temperature alloys (Aluminium-Iron-Cobalt, Aluminum-Iron-Nickel); mechanically alloyed material (Aluminum-Magnesium) and composite alloys. Direct property comparisons with counterpart ingot metallurgy alloys are presented where ever appropriate. Aluminum powder metallurgy alloy development is now at a mature stage of growth where commercial and aerospace application are being sought and developed in competition with traditional aluminum ingot metallurgy, titanium and composite structures. The future growth and development of these alloy systems is vested in reliable economic processing. Keywords: Alloys, High performance powder metallurgy, Production techniques, Microstructures, Processing. (JG).

Book excerpt: The results of a series of material studies performed by the Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Company over the time period from 1980 to 1991 are discussed. The technical objective of these evaluations was to develop and characterize advanced aluminum alloy materials with temperature capabilities extending to 350 F. An overview is given of the first five alloy development efforts under this contract. Prior work conducted during the first five modifications of the alloy development program are listed. Recent developments based on the addition of high Zr levels to an optimum Al-Cu-Mg alloy composition by powder metallurgy processing are discussed. Both reinforced and SiC or B4C ceramic reinforced alloys were explored to achieve specific target goals for high temperature aluminum alloy applications. Chellman, D. J. and Gurganus, T. Download or read book Sintering of Aluminum Alloys written by Padmavathi Chandran and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the powder metallurgical research on particulate aluminum alloys has been focused on optimizing composition. However, the role of process parameters on sinterability of prealloyed powders still remains to be critically evaluated. First part of the study logically evaluates the effect of sintering atmosphere (nitrogen, argon and vacuum) and temperature on sintered density, electrical, electrochemical and mechanical properties of Al-Cu-Mg, Al-Mg-Si and Al-Zn-Mg alloys. The effect of heat treatment (T4, T6 and T8 tempers) on microstructure and properties was also investigated. In an attempt to make the process less energy intensive and control the grain growth at higher temperature, in second part of the study, higher heating rates were implemented using multimode microwave (2.45 GHz and 6kW) furnace. Microstructural changes and properties were compared between microwave and conventional heated compacts. This book should help to shed some knowledge on new processing technologies, interaction of microwave with conductive materials and especially useful to researchers, professionals and students working in the field of aluminum powder metallurgy and microwave processing.
