Book Gallium in Nuclear Reactors

Download or read book Gallium in Nuclear Reactors written by Robert Isaac Jaffee and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unusual operating conditions of nuclear power reactors necessitate the use of unusual coolants. Thus, one desires a coolant which possess a low cross section for absorbing neutrons, good heat-transfer efficiency, a low melting point and a high boiling point. The element gallium possesses some of the requisite properties. It is a unique material, having a very low melting point, and a very high boiling point. Being a liquid metal, the heat transfer characteristics would be good, though not so good as those of some other liquid metals. The absorption cross section of gallium is rather high, which is a severe handicap. Since the cross section might be reduced by proper alloying, and since good coolants need be present in the reactor in only relatively small amounts, one cannot rule out the use of gallium on account of its cross section alone. Since gallium had some promise as a reactor coolant, research on the subject was merited.

Download or read book Liquid Metal Biomaterials written by Jing Liu and published by Springer Series in Biomaterial. This book was released on 2019-08-08 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first-ever book to illustrate the principles and applications of liquid metal biomaterials. Room-temperature liquid metal materials are rapidly emerging as next-generation functional materials that display many unconventional properties superior to those of conventional biomaterials. Their outstanding, unique versatility ("one material, diverse capabilities") opens many exciting opportunities for the medical sciences. The book reviews representative applications of liquid metal biomaterials from both therapeutic and diagnostic aspects. It also discusses related efforts to employ liquid metals to overcome today's biomedical challenges. It will provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the technical advances and fundamental discoveries on the frontier, and thus equip them to investigate and utilize liquid metal biomaterials to tackle various critical problems.

Book The Disappearing Spoon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sam Kean
  • Publisher : Little, Brown
  • Release : 2010-07-12
  • ISBN : 0316089087
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book The Disappearing Spoon written by Sam Kean and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times bestselling author Sam Kean comes incredible stories of science, history, finance, mythology, the arts, medicine, and more, as told by the Periodic Table. Why did Gandhi hate iodine (I, 53)? How did radium (Ra, 88) nearly ruin Marie Curie's reputation? And why is gallium (Ga, 31) the go-to element for laboratory pranksters? The Periodic Table is a crowning scientific achievement, but it's also a treasure trove of adventure, betrayal, and obsession. These fascinating tales follow every element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, and in the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. The Disappearing Spoon masterfully fuses science with the classic lore of invention, investigation, and discovery -- from the Big Bang through the end of time. Though solid at room temperature, gallium is a moldable metal that melts at 84 degrees Fahrenheit. A classic science prank is to mold gallium spoons, serve them with tea, and watch guests recoil as their utensils disappear.

Book Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Techniques for Biomedical Applications

Download or read book Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Techniques for Biomedical Applications written by Arbind Prasad and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADVANCED MATERIALS and MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES for BIOMEDICAL APPLICATIONS The book provides essential knowledge for the synthesis of biomedical products, development, nanomaterial properties, fabrication processes, and design techniques for different applications, as well as process design and optimization. In origin, biomaterials can come from nature or be synthesized in the laboratory with a variety of approaches that use metals, polymers, ceramic, or composite materials. They are often used or adapted for various biomedical applications. Biomaterials are commonly used in scaffolds, orthopedic, wound healing, fracture fixation, surgical sutures, artificial organ developments, pins and screws to stabilize fractures, surgical mesh, breast implants, artificial ligaments and tendons, and drug delivery systems. The sixteen chapters in Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Techniques in Biomedical Applications cover the synthesis, processing, design, manufacturing, and characterization of advanced materials; self-healing, bioinspired, nature-resourced, nanobiomaterials for biomedical applications; and manufacturing techniques such as rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, etc. Audience The book is for engineers, technologists, and researchers working in the area of biomedical engineering and manufacturing techniques. It is also appropriate for upper-level undergraduate and graduate students.
