Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nitro-Explosives: A Practical Treatise Concerning the Properties, Manufacture, and Analysis of Nitrated Substances, Including the Fulminates, Smokeless Powders, and Celluloid In compiling the following treatise, my aim has been to give a brief but thoroughly practical account of the properties, manufacture, and methods of analysis of the various nitro-explosives now so largely used for mining and blasting purposes and as propulsive agents; and it is believed that the account given of the manufacture of nitro-glycerine and of the gelatine dynamites will be found more complete than in any similar work yet published in this country. For many of the facts and figures contained in the chapter on Smokeless Powders I am indebted to (amongst others) the late Mr J. D. Dougall and Messrs A. C. Ponsonby and H. M. Chapman, F.C.S.; and for details with regard to Roburite to Messrs H. A. Krohn and W. J. Orsman, F. I. C. To these gentlemen my cordial thanks are due. Download or read book The Manufacture of Explosives Vol 2 of 2 written by Oscar Guttmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Explosives, Vol. 2 of 2: A Theoretical and Practical Treatise on the History, the Physical and Chemical Properties, and the Manufacture of Explosives The manufacture of gun-cotton and of nearly all nitro-com pounds consists essentially in immersing the prime material (cotton, glycerin, and similar materials) in a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids and allowing the nitric acid to act upon it for a more or less prolonged time. The explosive body thus formed is then separated from the spent acid, and washed, with the addition of alkalies as a rule, until it has lost all traces of acidity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explosives Materials: The Phenomena and Theories of Explosion and the Classification, Constitution and Preparation of Explosives The first edition Of this number Of Van Nostrand's Science Series having become exhausted, it became necessary, in order to keep the series complete, to issue a new edition. But in the fifteen years which have elapsed since the appearance of the first edition, many changes have taken place in the views regarding the phenomena of explosions, and many new explosives have attracted the world's at tention, particularly the important class of smokeless powders. Therefore, since the theory advanced by Berthelot no longer accounts for all the known phe nomena, it was deemed best by the pub lishers to have the entire number re written. Book New Methods of Testing Explosives Classic Reprint

Download or read book New Methods of Testing Explosives Classic Reprint written by C. E. Bichel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Methods of Testing Explosives Until about fifteen years ago black' powder and dynamite were almost the only explosives used in practical mining. The danger entailed by their use in workings where gas was met with, had, however, been generally recognised, and the admitted expediency of abolishing their employment in fiery mines or seams presently brought about a material change of affairs. Today, the use Of gunpowder has almost entirely ceased in collieries troubled with gas, and even in quarries it has been largely abandoned. Dynamite has perhaps stood its ground rather better, but this material, too, has had to yield wherever pit-gas or dangerous quantities Of coal-dust abounded, both in fact being almost universally superseded nowadays by so-called safety explosives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches on Modern Brisant Nitro Explosives Fliirscheim1 has demonstrated that tetranitroaniline can easily be transformed into trinitroamidophenol, even at the ordinary tem perature, if there is added to the acetone solution of it an 'aqueous solution of sodium acetate. As we have previously shown, apropos of tetranitroaniline, because of water being present with the acetone as well as sodium acetate, the alkaline reaction of this latter ought to accelerate the transformation. We always prepare the trinitro amidophenol by dissolving 100 g. Of tetranitroaniline in 600 cc. Of acetone with the addition of a little water. As soon as the tetra nitro compound is dissolved, we distil off the acetone until the tetra nitrophenol crystallizes out; this is then dried, washed with cold alcohol and then recrystallized, at first from alcohol and then from benzene. Melting point 178 cor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
