Book What Took Me Out to the Ball Game

Download or read book What Took Me Out to the Ball Game written by Katharine E. Willers and published by F Street Books. This book was released on 2011 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baseball fans attend Major League Baseball games for many reasons-to watch their home team in the midst of a winning season; to bask in the afterglow of a recent World Series win; or to see a newly acquired All-Star. But many impersonal factors determine how many people attend a Major League Baseball game, including local unemployment rates, the presence of other professional sporting franchises, or the number of games broadcast on television. What Took Me Out to the Ball Game utilizes a linear regression analysis to examine competitive and team-market factors that permeated Major League Baseball during the 1990s and what impact they had on attendance at games. It examines the significance of twenty market and team-quality factors, in particular the impact of the 1994 labor strike which caused the cancellation of hundreds of games and the World Series in 1994. Katharine E. Willers is a lifelong baseball fan and economic enthusiast. Resulting from research she did for this book, she spent a summer as a researcher at the National Baseball Hall of Fame Library in Cooperstown, New York. Ms. Willers graduated magna cum laude from Cornell University with a BA in Economics and earned an MA in International Relations from The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. After initially pursuing a career in business and marketing, she transitioned to a career in policy and international affairs. Katharine is married and currently resides in the Washington, DC area.

Book Annual Attendance Demand in Minor League Baseball

Download or read book Annual Attendance Demand in Minor League Baseball written by Nola Agha and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable time has been spent on identifying the demand determinants in major league sports. Much less attention has focused on minor league baseball despite its unique business structure: with free inputs provided by strategic alliance partners, minor league teams rely more heavily on their home stadiums, promotions, local brand, and partnerships with Major League clubs to generate demand. This conceptual research first defines the characteristics of minor league baseball that make it unique from demand in Major League Baseball. Next, it discusses theoretical demand determinants and provides a review of empirical results. It concludes by identifying the problems in current MiLB demand modelling and offers suggestions for improvements and future research.

Book Determinants of Ticket Price Fluctuation in the Secondary Market

Download or read book Determinants of Ticket Price Fluctuation in the Secondary Market written by Dongho Yoo and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each Major League Baseball (MLB) team has 81 home games in each season, and they are not 81 units of the same product but 81 different products. Fans value differently each of 81 home games, but what factors fans consider in this valuation have not been investigated much. Numerous studies have focused on factors that motivate fans to come to the game in general, but not many studies have focused on factors influencing game-by-game fluctuation within a season. The purpose of this study is to examine factors found from the previous literature influencing the secondary market ticket price fluctuation for individual MLB games. In this research, the author used the ticket prices of the secondary market as dependent variables. The secondary market is the platform for buying and selling tickets that previously were obtained from the franchise team (the primary market). The ticket prices of the primary market are relatively constant throughout the season, but the ticket prices of the secondary market radically fluctuate according to fans' willingness to pay for games. Therefore, the secondary market can be a good indicator reflecting fans' perceived value fluctuation game by game. After the factors were found from the literature, they were statistically analyzed through regression analysis to see if they had a significant effect on the ticket price fluctuations. Additionally, MLB teams were divided into three groups by teams' attendance level. The author investigated how the level of teams' popularity influences fans' preference.

Download or read book Demand For Offense written by Alexander Cardazzi and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2022, Major League Baseball changed its rules to include the designated hitter position in both the American and National Leagues. Up until that year, designated hitters were only used by American League teams. This rule change creates an environment where half of a major sports league is given a shock to offensive production. We analyze the demand for offense by investigating how the designated hitter affects attendance and offensive production for National League teams. Our results contribute to a rich literature that analyzes how offense affects fan participation, as we provide the first evidence using causal inference that offense increases fan attendance. Using a difference-in-differences framework, we show that the offense created by a designated hitter increases attendance by about 3.5-7.9% at National League home games as a result of the rule change. Given a point estimate increase in total offense of about 4.85%, we find evidence that attendance is likely elastic with respect to total offense.

Download or read book Pay Dirt written by James P. Quirk and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would a Japanese millionaire want to buy the Seattle Mariners baseball team, when he has admitted that he has never played in or even seen a baseball game? Cash is the answer: major league baseball, like professional football, basketball, and hockey, is now big business with the potential to bring millions of dollars in profits to owners. Not very long ago, however, buying a sports franchise was a hazardous investment risked only by die-hard fans wealthy enough to lose parts of fortunes made in other businesses. What forces have changed team ownership from sports-fan folly to big-business savvy? Why has The Wall Street Journal become popular reading in pro sports locker rooms? And why are sports pages now dominated by economic clashes between owners and players, cities with franchises and cities without them, leagues and players' unions, and team lawyers and players' lawyers? In answering these questions, James Quirk and Rodney Fort have written the most complete book on the business and economics of professional sports, past and present. Pay Dirt offers a wealth of information and analysis on the reserve clause, salary determination, competitive balance in sports leagues, the market for franchises, tax sheltering, arenas and stadiums, and rival leagues. The authors present an abundance of historical material, much of it new, including team ownership histories and data on attendance, TV revenue, stadium and arena contracts, and revenues and costs. League histories, team statistics, stories about players and owners, and sports lore of all kinds embellish the work. Quirk and Fort are writing for anyone interested in sports in the 1990s: players, players' agents, general managers, sportswriters, and, most of all, sports fans.
