Download or read book Aging in Asia written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The population of Asia is growing both larger and older. Demographically the most important continent on the world, Asia's population, currently estimated to be 4.2 billion, is expected to increase to about 5.9 billion by 2050. Rapid declines in fertility, together with rising life expectancy, are altering the age structure of the population so that in 2050, for the first time in history, there will be roughly as many people in Asia over the age of 65 as under the age of 15. It is against this backdrop that the Division of Behavioral and Social Research at the U.S. National Institute on Aging (NIA) asked the National Research Council (NRC), through the Committee on Population, to undertake a project on advancing behavioral and social research on aging in Asia. Aging in Asia: Findings from New and Emerging Data Initiatives is a peer-reviewed collection of papers from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand that were presented at two conferences organized in conjunction with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, Indonesian Academy of Sciences, and Science Council of Japan; the first conference was hosted by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing, and the second conference was hosted by the Indian National Science Academy in New Delhi. The papers in the volume highlight the contributions from new and emerging data initiatives in the region and cover subject areas such as economic growth, labor markets, and consumption; family roles and responsibilities; and labor markets and consumption.

Book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults

Download or read book Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social isolation and loneliness are serious yet underappreciated public health risks that affect a significant portion of the older adult population. Approximately one-quarter of community-dwelling Americans aged 65 and older are considered to be socially isolated, and a significant proportion of adults in the United States report feeling lonely. People who are 50 years of age or older are more likely to experience many of the risk factors that can cause or exacerbate social isolation or loneliness, such as living alone, the loss of family or friends, chronic illness, and sensory impairments. Over a life course, social isolation and loneliness may be episodic or chronic, depending upon an individual's circumstances and perceptions. A substantial body of evidence demonstrates that social isolation presents a major risk for premature mortality, comparable to other risk factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, or obesity. As older adults are particularly high-volume and high-frequency users of the health care system, there is an opportunity for health care professionals to identify, prevent, and mitigate the adverse health impacts of social isolation and loneliness in older adults. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults summarizes the evidence base and explores how social isolation and loneliness affect health and quality of life in adults aged 50 and older, particularly among low income, underserved, and vulnerable populations. This report makes recommendations specifically for clinical settings of health care to identify those who suffer the resultant negative health impacts of social isolation and loneliness and target interventions to improve their social conditions. Social Isolation and Loneliness in Older Adults considers clinical tools and methodologies, better education and training for the health care workforce, and dissemination and implementation that will be important for translating research into practice, especially as the evidence base for effective interventions continues to flourish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As people age, they become less mobile, and social networking becomes more difficult to maintain. This book examines the support networks of the elderly and reaches the conclusion that 'older people do not engage in relationships on the basis of a one-sided dependency; rather relationships tend to be reciprocal or interdependent'. The authors offer a positive and realistic approach to the relationship between the elderly and society.

Book Determinants of Family Living Arrangements of Older Singaporeans

Download or read book Determinants of Family Living Arrangements of Older Singaporeans written by PhD Yong, Vanessa and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, many populations in Asia are aging rapidly. With this demographic transformation, the support and care needs of the growing sector of older adults are pressing concerns that need to be addressed. The main source of support for older Asians has traditionally come from the family, but its sustainability is now in question. Socioeconomic changes that accompanied industrialization and modernization have increasingly led to a decrease in the availability of kin, as well as changes in resources, needs, values and preferences, both of older adults and caregivers. These in turn have profound implications for the living conditions and well-being of older adults. This book examines the factors that determine family living arrangements of older adults in Singapore, one of the fastest aging Asian countries. Based on analyses of nationally-representative cross-sectional and longitudinal data, the useful information is an invaluable resource and reference to academics, researchers, policymakers, social workers and other professionals in the fields of Gerontology and Family Studies, or to anyone interested in the family dynamics and well-being of older adults in Asia.

Book North American Elders

Download or read book North American Elders written by Eloise Rathborn- McCuan and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-01-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays provides an analysis of Canadian/U.S. social policy toward aging. The first chapter presents a continental view of demography. Subsequent chapters examine the Canadian and U.S. perspectives on social policy, long-term care, the chronic mentally ill, rural aging, aging veterans, native elders, and cross-national intergenerational families. Current Literature on Aging This volume represents a pioneering effort in Canadian-U.S. social policy analysis in the field of gerontology. Beginning with a continental viewpoint on demography, the book proceeds to deal with seven specific topics by means of a nation-to-nation analysis. Topics include social policy, long-term care, the chronic mentally ill, rural aging, aging veterans, native elders, and cross-national and intergenerational families. The last three topics are seldom addressed in books on aging; they are a vital new contribution to gerontological knowledge in both the U.S. and Canada.

Book excerpt: "Will 69 million baby boomers suddenly drop out of the workforce when they turn 65? It is difficult to imagine this generation, with its talent, education, and experience, idling away the last thirty years of life."—From the Foreword, by Robert N. Butler, M.D., The Mount Sinai Medical Center Old age has been historically thought of as a period of frailty and dependence, yet studies show that with the help of advances in health and medicine, current populations will live longer and remain healthier than previous generations. As average life expectancies rise, traditional concepts of retirement need to be reconsidered on all levels—from government policy to business practice to individual life planning. In this volume, leaders in the field of gerontology explore these changing conditions through the concept of "productive aging," which has been developed by leaders in the field to promote older adults' contributions to society in social and economic capacities. Productive Aging: Concepts and Challenges treats the implications of productive aging for the discipline of gerontology and for society in general. The first section defines the principles, historical perspectives, and conceptual frameworks for productive aging. The second section takes a disciplinary approach, treating the biomedical, psychological, sociological, and economic implications of a more capable older generation. The third section considers advances in theories of gerontology, and the fourth section suggests future directions in practice, theory, and research. Contributors: W.
