Book Determinants of Labour Demand

Download or read book Determinants of Labour Demand written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates causes of the recent experience of employment and output growth, whereby employment growth has recently converged with output growth after previously diverging. This is contrary to usual patterns of labour usage and the resulting usual lagged relationship between employment and output growth. The study seeks to ascertain whether changes in the price of labour or changes in output have caused the observed different characteristics of employment and output growth in recent periods. Elasticities of labour demand with respect to both output and wages are calculated at the aggregate and individual industry level for a selection of industries for which suitable data are available. The elasticities are examined to determine the relative contributions of output and wages changes in explaining the unusually long observed lag between GDP and employment growth. Results are largely consistent with previous studies. The partial elasticities differ between industries during the time period studied and it is possible to reject the hypothesis that the elasticity of labour demand with respect to real wages is unity for all industries. The most significant factor underlying the apparent convergence between growth of employment and output toward the end of the period was a reduction in average real wages growth, although structural changes did contribute. Error correction models indicate that the rate of adjustment between the short-run and the long-run varies between industries, with adjustment for most industries occurring within one year.
